Ο Μυστράς ήταν Βυζαντινή πολιτεία της Πελοποννήσου και απέχει έξι χιλιόμετρα ΒΔ της Σπάρτης. Σήμερα είναι ερειπωμένος, αν και έχουν αναστηλωθεί ορισμένα κτίσματα, όπως τα παλάτια και ναοί, αποτελεί πολύτιμη πηγή για τη γνώση της ιστορίας, της τέχνης και του πολιτισμού των δύο τελευταίων αιώνων του Βυζαντίου.
Η ιστορία «της νεκρής πολιτείας» σήμερα του Μυστρά αρχίζει από τα μέσα του 13ου αιώνα, με τη κατάκτηση της Πελοποννήσου από τους Φράγκους. Το 1249 ο Γουλιέλμος Β Βιλλαρδουίνος έκτισε το κάστρο του στην ανατολική πλευρά του Ταϋγέτου, στην κορυφή ενός υψώματος με απότομη και κωνοειδή μορφή, που λεγόταν Μυστράς ή Μυζηθράς λόγω του σχήματός του ή εκ του ονόματος του παλαιότερου ιδιοκτήτη που λεγόταν Μυζηθράς.
Μετά την ήττα των Φράγκων στη μάχη της Πελαγονίας το 1259, το κάστρο του Μυστρά παραχωρήθηκε στο Βυζαντινό αυτοκράτορα Μιχαήλ Η Παλαιολόγο. Από το έτος 1262 έγινε έδρα βυζαντινού στρατηγού του «σεβαστοκράτορος» και από τότε άρχισε η κυρίως ιστορική περίοδός του, που διήρκεσε δύο αιώνες. Οι κάτοικοι της γειτονικής Σπάρτης, έρχονται και εγκαθίστανται γύρω από το κάστρο, γι 'αυτό και η κατοικημένη περιοχή, που ονομάζεται χώρα οχυρώθηκε με τείχος. Συν τω χρόνω δημιουργήθηκε και νέα συνοικία, έξω από το τείχος, που ονομάσθηκε κάτω χώρα και προστατεύθηκε επίσης με τείχος. Από το έτος 1308 το σύστημα της διοικήσεως μεταβάλλεται και οι στρατηγοί γίνονται μόνιμοι διοικητές και κατά τα μέσα του 14ου αιώνα ο Μυστράς καθίσταται πρωτεύουσα της Βυζαντινής Πελοποννήσου. Έτσι δημιουργήθηκε το Δεσποτάτο του Μωρεως. Συνετοί Δεσπότες, όπως ο Μανουήλ Καντακουζηνός, ο Θεόδωρος Β Παλαιολόγος, ο Κωνσταντίνος ο Β Παλαιολόγος, ο μετέπειτα τελευταίος αυτοκράτωρ του Βυζαντίου, συνετέλεσαν ώστε ο Μυστράς να επεκτείνει την εξουσία του σε όλη την Πελοπόννησο και να γίνει εστία της πολιτικής και πνευματικής ζωής της αυτοκρατορίας, καθώς και το κέντρο της αναγεννήσεως των γραμμάτων και των τεχνών. Σοφοί, καλλιτέχνες και λόγιοι συγκεντρώνονταν στην αυλή του Δεσπότου, σπουδαιότερος και σημαντικότερος απ 'όλους, ο Γεώργιος Γεμιστός ή Πλήθων.
Το 1460 ο Μυστράς παραδίνεται στους Τούρκους και από τότε αρχίζει η παρακμή του.

Mystras-The Despotate of Moreas
Mystras was a Byzantine State of Peloponnese, six kilometres nothwest of Sparta. It is a valuable source for our knowledge of history, art and culture of the two last centuries of Byzantium. Today it is derelict, although some buildings have been restored, such as palaces and temples.
The story of the "dead" state of Mystras begins from the middle of the 13th century, with the conquest of the Peloponnese by the Franks. In the year 1249, William II Villehardouin built his castle on the eastern side of Taygetos, atop a hill with sharp and pineal form, called Mystras or Myzythras because of its shape, or the name of an older owner who was called Myzithras.
After the defeat of the Franks at the battle of Pelagonia in 1259, the fortress of Mystras was ceded to Byzantine Emperor Michael VIII Palaeologus. From 1262 it became the seat of the Byzantine General of «sebastokratoros» and the mainly historical period began since, which lasted for two centuries. The residents of neighbouring Sparta, come and settle around the Castle, which is why the residential area, named "hora" (land) was fortified with a wall. Over time created a new neighborhood outside the wall, which was named the "kato hora" (down land) and was also protected by firewall. After 1308 the administration system is altered and the generals are becoming permanent commanders. During the 14th century Mystras becomes capital of the Byzantine Peloponnese. And so the Despotato of Moreas was created. Wise Rulers such as Manuel Kantakouzenos, Theodore II Palaiologos and Constantinos II Palaiologos, the last emperor of later Byzantium, conduced so Mystras extended its authority throughout the Peloponnese and to become a hotbed of political and intellectual life of the Empire, as well as the center of the revival of literature and the arts. Philosophers, artists and scholars gathered in the yard of Despotou, greatest and most important of all, George Gemistus Plethon.
The 1460 Mystras surrenders to Turks and its decline started.

Εύχομαι κάποια φορά να πας κι εσύ εκεί στο Μυστρά και να περπατήσεις στα πλακόστρωτα δρομάκια του!!
