      Hey Michael! It all depends on what you are looking for. They’re all tools that add a different character. The sansamp is great if you want a quick and easy tool that gets you into the “mic’d up cabinet” sound. All the other DI’s shown there don’t provide that.
      I personally use the Noble DI and the Mesa boogie stuff :)

    Thanks for a nice straightforward comparison! At a different price point I was absolutely blown away by the API Tranzformer bass version. Have never felt more density and solidity to notes. Old school voice for sure. Am running an RMI Basswitch for the super clean modern voice and for its loops. Saving for the API as other side of the coin

    As far as I know, the "Presence" knob of SansAmp is boost-only; so setting it to 12:00 is a big boost. It should have been at 07:00 (completely off) for this demonstration. Other than that, this video has been very helpful; thanks for your time and effort!

    I've been using the sans amp for about three years now and I love it as an introduction to good sounding preamps. The next step up is the tone hammer and the cream of the crop is obviously the Noble. In my mind the darkglass is equivalent to the sans amp, but still offers a great tone and many rock bass players use it! Thanks again and maybe one day I can afford a noble!

    Appreciate the comparison. Wish the SansAmp had been set to be more "flat." All knobs at 12 really makes it not belong with the others. It's much more in that territory of trying to fake a real amp sound. The others aren't designed with that in mind, which is why they sound so much less colored, especially at the beginning. SansAmp literally means "amp and cab sound without an amp." An early precursor to amp modeling and IRs! And a very specific amp sound at that, I believe modeled after an SVT and 8x10. Thanks again, looking forward to more vids

I have always been an Ampeg guy and that gets that old-school SVT sound I love yet you can dial in some modern sound too. I have a Sansamp VT bass DI. that got crushed by a head falling off the cabinet and other than losing the drive it works great! If I need distortion I will just buy a Darkglass distortion pedal.

      I think that the Noble having the Bass Frequency at 150 is great. So many basses or other rigs only have it at 60 or 40hz.
      I think that the 100 to 150 range is the area left out that could really help.
      The EBS Microbass 3 has a semi parametric mid control that goes all the way down to 110hz….seems like something to try…maybe.
      $400 instead of the Noble at $1,200 plus.

    Hey
    Thanks for the video!
    I have the vintage ultra v2 and its a great pedal. both as a preamp and as an overdrive. but still, not quite where I want my sound to go. so I`m aiming and saving for the noble. I just cannot not have it :)
    Having that said, I really liked the tone hammer in this comparison. much less sterile than the vintage, and a bit warmer. (transparency is welcome in a pedal, the sterilization that I`m getting from my vintage ultra, sounds a bit detached from what my bass want and born to do). The Aguilar also much less overdoing than the sansamp ( a great pedal and a great solution for poor setups, but a bit old fashioned to my ears).
    The Tone Hammer seams to me like a sweet-spot in the middle after this comparison. decent transparency at natural settings, nice coloration when engaged and tweaked. versatile and in a useful musically way.
    Still going for the noble, but glad that I've came across this vid.
    Thanks!

    Ivan, if you get a chance (and are so inclined) get your hands on a Tech 21 Q-Strip and check it out. I just scored one last week and I'm quite blown away. The two-band parametric EQ is amazing. It's a "clean only" preamp, but I'll be pairing it with a Vintage Microtubes which will be here in a couple days. This pairing will be replacing my Darkglass Vintage Ultra, which I really like, but to my ears, the Q-Strip is much much sweeter sounding than the clean side of the Ultra. Hope all is well!

    I really like the sound of the SansAmp...but being new to these products, how are they used? Do you use this with your current amp/cab setup or is this something you go direct to a DI box to FOH?

    • @manny75586
      @manny75586 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are a lot of ways. Usually it is after you tuner and synth/wah pedals in your chain. The DI goes to FOH. The output goes to your other pedals and onto the amp.
      A lot of people (I do this) will run everything into the FX loop return so I can skip the amp preamp in the amp head and control the tone there.
      Some people put their DI/preamp at the end of the chain so FOH gets all of the FX being used go there too if your songs are FX intensive.
      There are other ways but those are most common.

    I went to play for a local church once and they had one of those Sansamp di and I hated it, I founded it super bright pretty much everything I did to get that brightness out of my signal didn't work, seems like after watching the video all the preamps besides the sansamp respects the tone of your bass, they work like a canvas where you can add this or that, but the sansamp once your engage it is already to colorful and bright and whatever you do you can't get that color out your signal.

    • @IvanBassist

    Is it just me or all preamps seem to be just an EQ box with some extras? I feel like I can record my bass guitar directly into the audio interface and get just as great results. Same for the digital stuff - all those amp sims and IR's seem like nothing more than an additional EQ curve to me.

    • @IvanBassist
      @IvanBassist  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could make that argument about all pro audio equipment. The signature sound of different pieces of gear is about how those EQ curves are applied to your signal. Each preamp
      Boosts bass, mids, treble differently. Some preamp’s single “mid” control is set at 500hz while others might have their mid at 1khz, for example

I just saw 2 Nobles listed on Reverb, one for 2,050.00 plus shipping in very good condition and the other was 2500.00 in excellent condition plus shipping and they’re used. I seriously doubt that. There are too many Bass players that don’t use the Noble or the Oracle. The Oracle is every bit as clean and uncolored as the Noble.
      The reality is if you’re a professional the studio equipment they have costs thousands of dollars more. The Avalon U5 is another excellent preamp for just under 1k. I wanted the old school tube amp sound in a smaller package. I’m not saying the Noble is not a quality preamp it’s just ridiculously priced for what it does. Especially when you can spend 800 bucks vs 2500.00 and not tell the difference.
      It’s not an option for me, if money wasn’t a road block I’d own the finest equipment that’s produced. Unfortunately money is generally always an issue.

Having said that, at times, quite edgy. Vintage Deluxe! It feels like it's more controlled and refined. In it for the Long Haul. Agular, the sleeper of the bunch! A French fine wine with complexity is sweet at times with a beautiful aroma. If the price was competitive, they would be very compelling. I'm definitely passing on the noble..

      Because DG and Sansamp are designed to colour a lot your sound via drive and distorsion. Aguilar and Noble concept are designed to keep the essence of your bass and just improve some frecuencies in the mid that works so good in the mix or recording.

      I can get very clean tones out of my DG Vintage Ultra. The Noble in my opinion is so subtle you can't hear much of anything even when it's adjusted. Maybe my ears aren't as sensitive as yours. For 1800 bucks the Noble better produce angelic tones that cause people to be mesmerized.

    • @LCA1985
      @LCA1985 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@richardselby1711 I have had both and are two different horses. You gan get kinda of clean tones with DG but too colored imo, Noble is just fundamental sound preamp, sounds amazing, is the kind of preamp made for very good expensive or vintage basses with unique voices so the Noble enhances and adds an extra to the particular great tone of the bass. You put a DG into this unique vintage basses and you would still get a great tone but you would lose the original tone concept. Regarding the expensiveness, yes, it is expensive. But it is a preamp for pro-players and recording studios so is pretty in the range of prices for them.
