I finished the series yesterday, and I'm very grateful that I found this channel, because without it I would have gone mad with my own rambling thoughts. It is really fantastic, that someone took the time and energy to go into this on such a deep level!
I'm terribly fond of the collective consciousness theory, it seems very accurate.
The question that keeps nagging at me is why no one is interested in Victor's story of how he came to be in the city? Everyone got here the same way except Victor, but it's like no one cares, while it's a pretty big deal. They were all on the road, traveling somewhere by car when they got to town, but Victor came out of the same basement as a kid where Julie appeared after the attack on the Colony house. Or did Victor not arrived here when he came out of the basement, but he came with his parents and that was just a memory of a later event?

    Ok, here goes.
    Slaugh
The monsters are the Slaugh, fairies from Irish mythology. The showrunners might even have been as cheeky as to drop what they are in the first episode, when the story that scares Ethan involves fairies (though as the good guys).
    Similarities below:
    - Slaugh draw people into their own separate fairy world. Monsters are in a "pocket dimension"
    - Slaugh can transform into black birds. Black birds can be seen on the fallen tree and throughout the series. This is probably how the monsters know everyone's names - they watch them during the day.
    - Slaugh have no mercy and torture their victims. Monsters match these characteristics.
    - Slaugh steal souls of the living and especially the dying or sad. This does not contradict and there are some things that suggest they match (Boyd's illness, impending divorce).
    - Slaugh wait for night to attack. Monsters do the same.
    - Slaugh are associated with the "Wild Hunt" and hunting for pleasure. Monsters seem to be hunting for the same reasons.
    - Slaugh can be "blocked, or evaded, by running (or staying) in doors after dark, or by not tempting fate walking alone in secluded, unpopulated areas (dark forests, empty streets, etc.)." Monsters cannot come in unless entry is opened for them, and people survive by staying in after dark.
    - Slaugh are described as: Haggard and thin, skin barely clinging to bone in a pitiful version of what used to be human form, the Sluagh are bird-like even when not in flight. Leathery wings are kept close to their bodies, forming a weathered sort of cape or cloak. Hands and feet of bony claws, sparse strings of dark hair covering their heads, gnarled pointed teeth protruding from a beak-like mouth. Monsters match this description when not in human form.
    - Slaugh are described as being once human. Monsters appear in human form at night when not attacking.
    - Slaugh will let you live if you put another in their path. Monsters seem to be attempting to making that trade with Sara.
There are further similarities, and hints during the show such as ravens and a monster that looks like it might have a beak in the opening credits. Emily Dickinson's poems sometimes relate to birds as well as fairies, and titles of quotes from her poems are on the specials board in the diner. For me, it's the birds that clinch it.
    Faraway Trees
Faraway trees correspond with Irish mythology also.
    - Fairy trees are one of the ways the Slaugh and other Irish fairy types travel between their world and ours - acting effectively as teleportation devices. Faraway trees seem to do the same thing.
    - Fairy trees bring bad luck to those that cut them down - sometimes a farmers field will have one left in its centre just because the farmer is afraid of cutting it. A cut down or fallen faraway tree seems to signal the bad luck of bringing someone to the "pocket dimension".
Also interesting in the first episode, the crows only seem to appear and try to scare the family away when Ethan climbs onto the tree and walks down it - highlighting its importance.
Boy in White and the Town's Origins.
I've already theorised on another thread about why a child's nightmare is part of this and won't repost this here.
    www.reddit.com/r/FromTVEpix/comments/tjo6r1/theory_everyone_is_trapped_inside_victors/
My theory has moved on a bit since this post but some observations still apply. Ultimately, this is the area I'm least sure about because these two elements seem entirely disconnected from the fairy mythos and we only have a few disconnected facts to interpret from, these being:
    - Clothing worn by the Slaugh (1950s onwards? Or are they all from 1950s? The teenage boy's clothes look quite modern)
    - Victor surviving so long and befriending the boy in white early on
    - "Kill the boy"
    - Trees moving
    - Peaches running out
    - The wires seeming like how a child might think they work
    - Very few books being left there
    - The motel pool missing the motel next to it
    - The town being from the 1970s (1971?)
    - Ethan seeing the Boy in White and their apparent friendship (RIP Meagan also had drawing of boy in white on her wall)
    - Victor's apparent prescience
    - People recognising their dreams, Abby in particular
    - The two dogs?
    - Slaugh changing from screechers to speakers
    - Slaugh walking? (I think it's rules of a game that Slaugh set themselves)
    - Talismans being found, their seemingly pagan origin, and why they work? (I think it's rules of a game that Slaugh set themselves)
    - Victor says "it's starting". This suggests a cycle.
    - Civil War soldiers (red herring, civil war reenactors from 1950s or later?)
    - Farm animals?
    - The symbol that Jade sees
    - Images of floating islands and deep holes in the ground
    - Image of a child underground in a box
    - Spider imagery in both Ethan and Victor's drawings
    - Lake of tears drawings and dreams
    - There are older parts of the town, such as the root cellar, which are from previous teleportations (it says "older" next to root cellar on the wall of questions in Ethan's house).
    - Trees moving "closer" and junction box + power lines disappearing from the railway the second time we see it - as if the forest is slowly swallowing the town.
    Final Theory
For eons, the fairy world and the human world intersected. Sometimes, humans would be pulled into the fairy world, and were forced to survive there until they could find a faraway tree to escape home.
In the past (long before the civil war), a faraway tree is broken (either by Slaugh or humans), creating a pocket dimension between the fairy world and that of the humans, sucking in a piece or a reflection of the human world (as in the drawings of floating islands and pits) into a piece of the forest of the fairy world. This piece is why there are so few houses and a motel pool without a motel.
This is the broken tree, which is now creating portals around the continental United States, pulling people in, either at random because it is broken, or intentionally as it is controlled by the boy in white. The boy in white is likely a spider-like monster, perhaps based on Grandmother Spider (dreamcatcher gift to Fatima + Ethan and Victor draw spiders) that manifests as a child, and is another form of mythical creature in the pocket dimension.
In order to manifest a world and keep it sustained, the spider-entity is forced to meld with the mind of a child, imaginative or susceptible enough for its needs, until the child is all used up and it must repeat the process, taking further pieces from the human world. This is hinted at by Victor's drawing of a child trapped in a box deep underground. Perhaps each time the cycle begins again when the child eventually dies of old age.
The Slaugh are trapped in this dimension themselves, also unable to go home...(this is why they wish to "kill the boy" and why they target Meagan). In the meantime, they do what they like to do, slaughter and torture humans for sport. They create their own rules about never running, and perhaps they even made the talismans themselves to make the game more challenging. Alternatively, since the forest is the teleported "town" of the fairies, perhaps the talismans originate in the world the fairies come from. Perhaps the spider-like entity does too - a predator of fairies. Or it's an interdimensional predator.
The Slaugh change and evolve the game as time goes by, until the world begins to fall apart. This is signalled by two cars coming (Victor said it happened soon after he first saw the boy in white), suggesting an increased frequency in teleported folk. It is also signalled by the "trees getting closer" suggesting the piece of the town in the pocket dimension is getting taken over by the fairy forest.
In the civil war era, and again in the 1950s, and again with Victor's town in the 1970s, a piece of earth is made/teleported into in the pocket dimension. Since there are images of Victor with a dog and little girl, it's possible that Victor's sister was the child's soul demanded by the boy in white, with Victor's survival as the price. This is how he has survived so long.
The Slaugh take on the appearance of the inhabitants of previous iterations of the town, or more likely simply their favourite people they have killed in the past. Perhaps they can only take on the appearance of those brought in with each large piece of the human world at the start of each cycle. Or, these Slaugh are the remains of trapped souls from history and manifest as their old selves.
I may be wrong on some of the details, especially the Boy in White and town's origins since we have so little to go on, but I feel strongly that this is as grounded a theory as any. Happy to be proven wrong, hear other theories, or to see other supporting evidence, or to see contradicting evidence in the comments!

You can also compare to Norse/Scandinavian myth.
The monsters are trolls: flesh-eating, hate sunlight and fear the metal of Odin and Thor’s hammers (perhaps the talismans are pieces of hammer, since Viking runes are inscribed upon them). Trolls are tricksters who can shapeshift. When sunlight hits them, it kills them by turning them into stone- perhaps why there are random boulders in the field there.
There are also the “hidden folk”/elves who can be invisible. They don’t get along with trolls and they help humans. But they are also mischievous and abduct humans, bringing them into their spiritual realm. Even today in Iceland, mysterious disappearances are attributed to elves! Maybe that is who is talking to Sara.
Trolls live in underground (condemned by Odin) and elves/fae live in the forest.
Perhaps the goats in the town are an homage to the Scandinavian tale of Billy Goats Gruff. Where the goats need to outsmart the troll under the bridge to cross over to the greener pasture (symbolizing overcoming obstacles to get to a better place).
In Ep. 1, the story Julie tells Ethan is about the “Lake of Tears” (a Swedish rock band) and the dad mentions his 83 Volvo.
The Star Magic Motel in town- the genesis story in Norse myth is that the first man and woman were born from a star.
The crows are Odin’s birds, in myth, he sends them out to watch over the world below him and bring back messages. Odin also can shift into an Eagle (an eagle is shown flying in the intro).
So many other bird references: bird decor on the homes walls, the poem by Dickinson “Hope is a Feathered Thing” on the diner walls, the ivy on the entrance to colony house is in the shape of a giant bird, the Cromenockle story (that Ethan loves) is about a bird in the rainbow sky- like the rainbow bridge in Norse myth that crosses to heavenly Asgard.

I think it’s obvious now that tabitha will find victor at the bottom of her hole that she is digging. Also, the town is dangerous. The people in the town and colony house are better off in the forest with so many more ways to escape with a possibility of finding more relics and a way back home, if there is one. I guess being stagnant kills considering the forest inches closer to the town.

I know I am late to the game, but I just finished the first season and I do love your theories. You've done great research and you've put a lot of thought into this theory. I hope that the writers and creators of this show have also put as much research, thought and care into everything.
We don't want another lost, where it's a pick and choose ending, where it's as simple as good vs bad, light vs the dark and each viewer can decide the resolution for themselves.
A lot of times these shows throw plenty of symbolism, mythology, psychology, hints and even easter eggs into a show so ppl can get hooked, so ppl can play the theory and guessing game with the possibility salad they've thrown together, but they have nothing set in stone yet.
The writers and creators may not even have all the answerers themselves yet, they may just have a idea of a project and what they want to highlight, but not how and truly why?
I am afraid that this show will also run into these issues, but I am keeping hope alive and I hope they have put as much research and thought into from as you did in this video.

And I think all these people are stuck in a child's imagination. That's explained the drawings in the intro, the que será, será theme song, why the child (the boy in white) have a dreamlike presence about him, why the wiring and plumbing don't make sense (bcoz the child is not good with details), faraway trees exist (I remember reading about them in some children books when I was little), food and livestocks magically appeared just when they are needed, tabitha found a lost item (because some kids love collecting lost items), day and night here is the child's dream and nightmare or that the child see the monsters hunting at night as a game (that explained the civil war soldier too because the child, just like most regular boys, might be into toy soldier game) and there are rules for this game (like before the talisman, they shriek before they come and after the talisman, the rules changed, the monsters now come silently, can not enter house with talisman, etc) and talking about the talisman, the boy's dog suddenly appear and purposely caused boyd to get lost and come across the talisman just when it needed, the type of people the town needed are conveniently trapped next and the reason why children don't last long here and why the voices wanted ethan to die is because the host is a child and especially ethan because he too have a vivid imagination. I will even go further by saying Ethan might be that child seeing that all these happened after his sister scared him with a monster's story, he loves fantasy adventure stories and he doesn't want his parents separated. And that will explained why Ethan can heal fast and why Ethan looks eerily similar to the boy in white 🤔

I think maybe the Boy in White, Victor (maybe even Ethan) could be the little boy the priest turned away that then got his neck broken by the abusive dad. We are lead to believe the boy died but he survived, and he is paralyzed or in a vegetative state, creating this metaphysical/fantasy world in his mind.
The townspeople influenced by ppl from real life (Donna is a caretaker that feeds peaches or fruit cocktail, Kristy is the medic, Jade or Boyd are doctors trying to breakthrough to him or heal him, Kevin is a security guard and his mom is the clinic’s cook, friends and family are visitors to the hospital).
The monsters are maybe derived from stories being read while in this immobilized state- like Thor comics (hence flesh-eating trolls who hate sunlight and talismans from Thor’s hammer that repel them), maybe even civil war tales and other stories. Like Wizard of Oz, or the movie Identity or Shutter Island….

  • @achtundvierzigsieben

I think an initial thought of the writer was the concept of a "Sundown Town", the cast/residents are super divers, mixed couples and alternative, and the monsters are (mostly) super-white 50s characters + in one painting is the white figure and in the other one are white hands reaching for Fatima and Ellis.

I think that either Victor or the Boy in White was the little boy the priest turned away when he sought protection from his abusive dad. When the priest went to the boys house and saw him with a broken neck, we are made to assume that he died- when I’m fact he survived but is now in a clinic in a paralyzed or vegetative state. From his mind in a clinic, he has created this magical or metaphysical world/vortex that has drawn in people from real life as townspeople (like Donna is a caretaker who feeds him peaches, Kristy is a medic, Kevin a security guard and his mom the hospital cook, Jade or Boyd are therapists/doctors trying to save him, and there are family and friends who are visitors etc). And maybe the monsters and this town have been created from stories, bible tales, civil war tales, Thor comic books with Norse tales of flesh-eating trolls who hate sunlight and fear the metal hammers of the gods (like the talismans) etc that are being read to him. They do make a big deal books/stories being read to Ethan (perhaps he is another patient)- The Cromenockle is his favorite book about a female bird in the rainbow sky- maybe a nod to the Norse myth of the Odin and gods across the rainbow bridge to Asgard.
Perhaps the monsters are indicative of the abuse the little boy suffered at home- maybe his dad or mom yelled and screamed at him (like how the monsters used to shriek), and maybe one of his parents was more quiet but manipulative, but just as harmful (how the monsters are evolving) to get to the little boy IRL.

    • @FromLand

From a psychological perspective, the kid in white not directly communicating with adults (we don't count Victor Pan), may just be a due to fear. If we pay attention, we can see that the kid in white is almost trying to conceal his presence from the adults in the town (noted by how he gave a hush sign to Ethan when he first saw him). In Jungian psychology (connecting to what you said), the shadow self is often viewed as an opposite representation of the wounded, disaffected/neglected child (the essence of the self), and one needs to first help that inner child heal to overcome the negative/dark manifestations of the unconscious. The rabbit hole goes very deep from there and this show is definitely a piece of brilliant work far beyond its entertainment aspect.

My main problem with this is the show is listed as Sci-fi Horror. Not fantasy horror.
Yes we've been shown two sides. Light and dark, chaos and order. Two side like the chess references we keeps seeing. They has been far to many for it not to be some type of game. Everyone has been selected for a particular skill-set.
We had 2 retired Vets that we know of, a priest, an engineer, philosopher, I'm pretty sure the bold guy at colony house is something like a theoretical physicist and whatever Jade does. Dude is clearly very smart!
Then we see that people find the talisman and the "monster" skill-set changes. Like a level up for both the people and the "monsters". Also the "monster" are clearly following rules. As in, no running, no opening of doors or windows unless they're first invited inside.
"When you've got kids you nail the window shut"
Because even if it's not nailed shut they still can not open it! Why would the "monster" follow those rules? There must be something or someone there to enforce those rules. That we haven't seen.
I think what we're watching is a deadly intergalactic game that may have been going on for thousands of years. This would fall into line with the Sci-fi horror aspect and also explain the wireless technology we've been shown.
Great Video! Thanks for all the work you've done! I just wanted to share my thoughts with you.

They could flip the mythology into science fiction in a similar way Marvel did (but with a horror theme). The Russo brothers (who have worked a lot behind the Marvel movies) are working on this show as well, so I wouldn't be surprised if they go that route.

Yeah, I've been getting some kind of game vibe too. Including the fact that with appearance of talismans monsters had to envent creative ways to be let in, not to mention that it been said that they seem to play with their victims. Also the fact that Jade in the beginning took it all for some kind of quest and was looking for clues, it parallels with him and others getting visions and signs and having already collected important information about nature of the town (mostly Viktor as he was their for a quite some time and had seen what could have been the beginning of present cycle) like something is giving people a chance to win if they can puzzle it out (though i would say team work is quit poor).

We get vague clues that could have multiple explanations, answers that only lead to more questions, & zero confirmation. I don't suspect the season finale next will be much different unfortunately. I have enjoyed this season & hope for another season. Shows that string the audience along with mystery can be fun. Once that audience suspects answers may never be forthcoming is when audience members start to tune out & shows get canceled or go off the rails. I hope FROM doesn't go down that path but based on the first 9 episodes it seems dangerously close. Assuming episode 10 has no answers & a second season a year from now has no significant answers or pathway home, could you imagine tuning in for a 3rd season? I couldn't & would likely would be kicking myself for sticking with it in the first place knowing how vague everything was to start.

    • @FromLand
      @FromLand  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I've been thinking about that question for a while too. Assuming that they are within one of the Norse realms (and considering the Freyja and Freyer symbology), they may be somewhere between Vanaheim (home of the Vanir gods like Freya and Freyer) or Alfheim (home of the light and dark elves, and ruled by Freyer-which would add to why the talismans work). Alternatively, it's possible they may be in a different place altogether and the creators are just mix-and-matching different elements from Norse mythology in a creative way. As for the lighthouse, I think it may be part of some kind of portal/passage to a new place, but don't see its connection with Yggdrasil (unless the creators again decided to take more of a creative route to represent the concept of Yggdrasill as an interconnector of the different realms). As for the spiders, they may be acting as gatekeepers-I'll soon share my thoughts on that in a new video.

    My theory so far:
They are not on earth (spiritually) anymore. This place whatever its purpose may be, is a part of what physics/science explain with the loop theory.
This World is time itself. Its the flow of time itself, time is not running or Shopping, thats why there are references to ancirnt cultures as well as the still modern bible is mentioned at least. The people now there are definitely from different times in the past and i am Sure nobody is aware of the difference because everybody feels like still "living" in his own time, thats why they maybe did not talk to others about the actual year/date, time itself as the place/space makes them feel like the old Kind of order (which "time" offers) is still given or takes them the chance to remember at all correctly. Thats what i thought when kenny, boyd and donna looked at the Man and said "they are all from different places", i thought "why does nobody ask: but from when are you from?" Fatima, ellis and boyd are possibly mostly from the 70ies area approximatly, there are references to vietnam war, the clothes could be from that area, fatimas and ellis Lifestyle hints to that (community kind of living, polyamory, colorful paintings, weed, fatimas car the beetle, fatimas dad killed because of his belief/Religion as many iranians were in the iranian Revolution 1979...) and frank and his fanily could be from somewhere around the Civil war area, look at the clothes of the mum and little girl and how the old Lady ghost Was dressed in the first scene of Episode 1! Somewhere someone said this place could be a trap and prison for the most evil ever to walk the earth and everything evil (spiritual energys maybe as a seed from this place, spreading on earth in the minds of humans) that is recurring on earth, is dragged up to in here, maybe sometimes also very very evil people in Person are trapped up in here, but people with traces of evil energy coming from trauma are also been trapped, maybe like some kind of "bug", maybe its needed because traumatizey people are psycholocically in combination with terrible circumstances spreading the evil seed from trauma wounds as well, and i am Sure there were different cycles in the past, the last one still actual cycle began 1978 (time on earth) and maybe the people to not age as long as this place does not connect again to earthly place in the matter of spacetime, space, time....the place fromville itself and its passage to it is like a backdoor on the flow we call time, which can be normally not been traveld backwards and forwards only as long as we live and as fast/slow as we humans definite time as a current flow meazured for example with clocks. But when somehow the Gates are suddenly open, the connection between time itself as this place and our normal physical space, makes it possible for our body to grow and Look older. The loop theory contains what physics/science calls space, a model of a spiderweb as the space itself, its not laying in the space, and time is a part of this spiderweb and
the way the "net" is spun results in, for example, the current space-time, time and physical location as we experience and describe it and everything in it such as matter, light and information can be rearranged in millions of different ways and every change in the network has consequences for the whole structure. much is still theoretical according to science, but if time is also a result of a mixture of matter, light and information (within the network, according to loop theory) then this could explain a lot in from if one is willing to connect science with the supernatural: what the place looks like, what laws it follows, what the threat is, how the monsters are now, that can change and reassemble at any time and also the number of people trapped in this place, who they are, how they are, whether you carry positive or negative spiritual energy, how you interact with other people, how much knowledge you have about the world and the universe also affects the design of the place, as we are all made of matter, energy and information. Perhaps religion and belief represents a kind of protection that the evil keeps down here, but the more the residents are able to understand, apart from the spiritual purpose of this place, how it works, how its incredible rules and laws end up being following just one other possible variant of the great, universal natural laws of our universe is a chance for evil to finally be fully unleashed. That's why not only 2 cars were pulled into the city again, but jade was one of them. He wasn't meant for this place, but the evil somehow managed to bring him here purposefully, and as we know, Jade seems to be the one most able to comprehend how this place works. what he meant well for everyone might become a danger for all of mankind in fromville. and the faraway trees could possibly be special strings, as passages within this place, because according to physics, strings are, for example, really passages from place to place and if you understand time here as a place, the faraway trees might even be the forks in the road to different points ( ages) but also back into the space that we humans perceive as such.

    • @martinalinders9297
      @martinalinders9297 ปีที่แล้ว

Just speculating but in this Kind of thinking the evil in this place been trapped could also be a mixture of matter, energy and information and maybe Religion, beliefs, humans doing evil referering to their religious belief, is the energy part of the evil been trapped and is mostly the part which makes the "seed" evil Sets in the spirits of living hunans on earth, but for to fully escape and to unleash itself fully on earth with its whole power and destroy the whole (divine?) Creation, evil needs also to be able his matter and information part or naybe all three parts are always connected when a part of the evil forces are able to cause evil on earth, but it needs to be able to not also use the mentioned backdoor when the Gates are opened to drag humans in for example, it needs the Gates to be opened fully and as long as possible til it has fully escaped. Maybe this is the Moment the whole "place" fromville is also been destroyed, and as so it is a part of time (beeing a place in time itself), maybe that will destroy time itself and the order in the spiderweb (loop theory) can not be rearranged anymore again, the normal possibility it has to rearrange its order again when chaos is caused through a change, leads to fully impossibility to ever create a maintainence again. Like the chaos that is caused then, can never be balanced again within the natural laws of order and chaos as opposites and outbalancing forces for one another, as well as two parts of balance as a state itself. Not order and chaos are the states, they are the forces that creates the state (balance) and if the stare is destroyed or the progress too much disturbed, the state itself can not be reached again and order and chaos themself are destroyed or evil gains fully Power of it forever. Remember: mostly evil is connected to the imbalance, not able to fulfill something, not be able to create something perfect in itself or to follow always given rules/laws that hold the Balance as well as they created it and could destroy it.

Jung later in life discovered spiritualism , don't read too deep into jungs theory its multilayered and too complex to be applied to a theme for a series as we are so varied in our back ground and most of jungle research involves rich males of high standing ,so its questionable in its outcomes

    • @FromLand
      @FromLand  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Actually, writers deliberately insert these archetypes into their work, and Jung's work is ideal for this (he was a mad genius despite the shortcomings of the era he belonged to). We know-as one of the executive producers of From indicated-that the mythology is central for the series, but that it is just a device/pressure point to ultimately tell a story about people/human nature. This is why I don't think the creators will take a route that won't meaningfully complement the message about human nature/behavior that they are trying to creatively convey. Jung's work is also classic and a lot of people go through it to some extent in University (especially literary/liberal arts majors). When it comes to real-life practice, I have a bias in favor of the cognitive/neuroscientific approach, but still love Jung's theories about the mind and the way he made sense of the world's mythologies. Joseph Campbell also comes to mind when speaking of the latter. The producers of this show are also very much into the esoteric, so I think it's natural we'll see that influence in the show.

As someone who predominantly leans on neuroscience, one must recognize that not all psychological phenomena are reducible to our current science (at least not for now).
