This is my reaction to Geography Now! Poland
In this video I react to the Geography Now! video for European country Poland. In this video not only do I learn about the geography of Poland but I also learnt about Polish history, the culture of Poland, the Polish economy and even awesome Polish food. On this channel I will be learning as much as I can about Poland so please recommend other videos for me to watch.

Poland is basing on a couple of outstanding lands: Greater Poland, Lesser Poland, Mazovia, Pomerania, Masuria, Warmia, Cuiavia and of course, the pearl in the crown, but most germanized - Silesia.
Kopernik was Polish. Death camps were German.

The longest history Poland has with Lithuania.
In 1386 Jadwiga (female king of Poland) married Jogaila (grand duke of Lithuania).
Their marriage was literally the most important marriage in history of Europe - it wasn't just one royalty marrying another royalty but it was one ruller marrying another ruller - one country marrying another country.
Thanks to this marriage Poland and Lithuania were united under one crown from 1386, then in 1569 they truly became one country (known as Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth).
For some time it was the biggest coutry in Europe, there was even a period when they had access to 3 seas.
Then in 1795, as a result of the partitions, they disappeared from the maps for over 100 years. Officially they separeted in 1918 when after WW1 they came back as saparate countries under Russian influence. Then WW2 happened and they disappeared again, they regained their full freedom from Russia only little over 30 years ago.
So you can really say that history of Poland and Lithuania has been connected since that wedding, till recenty.
So basically for Poland:
- Lithuania - his ex-wife with whom he has children, they had the same monarchs for over 400 years,
- Hungary - BFF, they also shared a few manarchs (even Jadwiga was from Hungary),
- Czech Republic and Slovakia - they had their problems but they like each other, the languages are quite similar,
- Germany - it's good now but Poland has been attacked many times and is still seeking war reparations,
- Russia - they don't like each other and have been at war many times.
- Austria - similar as with Germany.
- Ukraine - they also have few problems and those lands were in past polish but Poland really helped Ukraine recently - because of war.
- Belarus - polish people pretend like it doesn't exists.
How about Wien and Ottomans or Kosack or Bolsheviks - Poland vs Russia war 1918-1921?
-Lithuanians don't like us, the relationship we had was a bit one sided, they were always dominated by us. In the 1940s, they slaughtered about 100,000 people in Ponary, including 2,000 Poles - Ponary massacre.
-Hungary does not border Poland, but it used to. Until recently, the most liked country in Europe, but recently our relations have deteriorated a bit because of the war in Ukraine.
-The Czechs don't like us, we've always argued about the border, recently we lost millions of dollars as a result of their actions (it's about the Turów coal mine).
-The Slovaks invaded us in 1939 together with Hitler - The Slovak invasion of Poland.
-Not every Pole is against Russia, but it's quite complicated.
-Many Poles do not like the Germans, even though they cut themselves off from their history. The Germans don't like us either, they believe we are thieves.
-The Austrians once occupied us and turned the Ukrainians against us. Poland does not border Austria.
-The Ukrainians sadistically slaughtered more than 140,000 Poles in Volhynia Massacre, including thousands of children. The people and organization responsible for the genocide have the status of national heroes in Ukraine. Figures such as Stepan Bandera and Roman Shukhevych have their monuments, squares, streets and stadiums are named after them. To this day, Ukrainians do not allow exhumations, we cannot bury our loved ones. They make boorish provocations like putting a plaque/bust of Roman Shukhevych (the UPA - Ukrainian Insurgent Army commander responsible for the genocide) on the facade of the Polish school No. 10 in Lviv (which used to be a Polish city before the war). The Volhynia genocide is one of the most horrific genocides of the 20th century.

-From a historical point of view, Belarusians suffered more from us than we did from them. Many Poles do not like them because of the migration crisis. Poles have been meddling in Belarusian affairs for years, trying to bring democracy there.

It should be clarified that the areas in Gambia and the island of Tobago was not a colony of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, but a colony of the Duchy of Courland - a vassal of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The Duke of Courland, Jakub Kettler, pursued an independent policy on this subject.
The Scottish mentality is probably a good reason why we like the Scots.

I live in UK for 11 years now, visiting my mother land couple times a year. I'm from Wroclaw and believe this city developedment is so huge I can't even describe. It's most advanced city in Poland this days, way way above Manchester and Liverpool (I'm living basically 30-40 min from both).... It's stunning what progress they made. I'm planning to comeback as soon as I'll be ready

I love how interested you are in Polish culture! In my opinion the best Polish dishes are: gołąbki (cabbage rolls with different stuffing depending on the region), pierogi (also made with at least 20+ different stuffings), Polish potatoes are the best (no matter how you cook them :D), you should also try classic "kotlet mielony" which is like cutlet made out of minced meat :)
To dziwne, ale w tej chwili najlepsze drogi, jakie widziałam są w Polsce wschodniej, a nie w regionach zurbanizowanych np. na Śląsku. Rodzina mieszka w Niemczech i byli zdziwieni, że mamy lepsze drogi, niż u nich ;-) Najgorszym sąsiadem była i jest Rosja, z pozostałymi można się porozumieć. Jestem ze Śląska, najlepsza jest moczka (świąteczny deser), nigdy nie zrobisz takiej samej, bez moczki, nie ma świąt ;-) A oprócz tego: żurek i bigos (domowe, nie z restauracji). Thank you for sharing your experiences with us. I love Scotland and the Scots. I lived in Glasgow for 1.5 years and I always remember those times fondly. I am from Poznań (Greater Poland - where Poland was born). If you want to experience the true spirit of Poland, I highly recommend it. Poznań residents are proud of their city, just as Poles are proud of their country. If you are interested in Polish history and culture, this point is a must-see.
The city has always had a defensive character from the beginnings of statehood until the end of World War II. Two of the 4 victorious uprisings in Poland were the Greater Poland Uprisings: 1806 and the particularly important 1918-1919. Poznań does not celebrate independence day on November 11 in a big way (we celebrate the name day of St. Marcin Street more). For Poznań residents, independence day is December 27, and celebrations in Greater Poland last until February 16. Other interesting facts:
- the first and oldest cathedral in Poland - the first kings of Poland were buried here, and probably also Mieszko I (the first ruler of Poland),
- remains of the foundations of the palace of Mieszko I and the Dobrawa chapel,
- Genius Loci archaeological reserve - close to the cathedral - where the original fragment of the Poznań stronghold's rampart from the 10th century is exposed (I guarantee you haven't seen anything like this, it's fascinating!),
- Bambrzy in Poznań,
- The Poznań Palm House is the largest garden of this type in Poland and one of the oldest in Europe,
- MTP, i.e. Poznań International Fair,
- Squadron 302 "Poznański" in Great Britain,
- Poznań was a fortress,
- Poznań was one of the most destroyed cities after Warsaw during World War II, with air raids starting on September 1, 1939,
- Poznań is famous as a green city, so it is worth visiting in spring, summer or early autumn.

I am from Poland and what I can tell you is that we should be long time ago powerful country. But becauce Russian and German influance and Wars we were forced to travel around a Europe with our skills and qualifications to raise our home status. I remember when we arrived to Ireland in 2004 locals ware suprised that we have coce (soda), mc donalds etc. Currently I leave 30 min away from Gdańsk and Sopot on both cost and Kaszubian Pomerania. It's unknown who made Vodka, the earliest records of it being made were in Poland during the 8th century but Russians were the ones with the first actual distillery. Though the Polish also made alcohol similar to bandy or cognac during this time but its invention is attributed to the Dutch of the 16th century so it's kinda hard to say

I am from Western Pomerania. It is known as "ziemie odzyskane" so "recovered territories" and we as well as most of the western Poland have a very diffient mindset from eastern Poland. It is all due to partitions that divided our nation for 123 years (1795-1918). This caused us to become almost like two separate nations in terms of mentality. Check out two maps: maps of paritions of Poland and presidental elections in 2010. They are basically the same maps

Poland look like west European countries now. We have rapid grow from 1990. Warsaw look like little New York, but clean. ( Thats not my word but Americans who visit us).

Mainly as Polish ... we keep it in memory but don't discriminate or shout that our country wasn't existing for 123 years. It's sad and painful to think about, but as I said - noone screams about Poland this Poland that and we need to have all the privilages because what we suffered as a country. New generations has come and we are trying our best to build up strong economy even with still old politicians who are mindlessly stuck in religion and socialistm times.

I'm originally from Upper Silesia and I moved to Gdańsk, the difference is ENORMOUS, mostly in infrastructure and the actual way people talk to you.

Hello! Thanks for your reaction to the video about Poland! I'm from Lublin region (like Kamil) living by the river Bug bordering Belarus. Last year we were the closed area because of the Łukaszenka's fake immigrants problem. The Police and the army with guns were an everyday picture. We needed to show our ID going in or out my town and town I worked, so 4 or more times a day. It had such an impact on me that when I went farther to the other town shopping I showed my ID instead of my credit card ! ;))
I think noone aged less 50 has seen or heard about Turoń. That's an old tradition in some regions.
There is the tv channel called Trwam - it's not only for the pope, it's mainly about our Roman Catholic feith, the transmissions of the masses, about the Bible and news. I've watched it some in the past, at the begining, it'a a good tv channel.
My favs bands from my youth are: Budka Suflera, Lady Pank, Bajm, Manaam, Elektryczne Gitary, SDM and many more.
Today I'm a fan of the Swedish metal band SABATON who sing about the Polish history in an amazing way - a must to watch, e.g. 40:1, Uprising, Inmate 4859 or Winged Hussars :-) They sing about the war history from all over the world. They've got a great song about Scottish history called Blood of Bannockburn. I strongly recommend them :)

Colonies stuff is amazing, they weren't actually colonies of the Polish - Lithuanian Commonwealth - Commonwealth had a small vassal state in the northern regions (areas of current Latvia), called Courland. The ruler of Courland was a quite talented businessman and entrepreneur and he managed to get the colonies for Courland, which in fact got into Commonwealth jurisdiction. As far as I read there was no slave trade there or overuse of the natives and these were quite peaceful colonies, at least until they were sold because of instability within the Commonwealth mainland, and obviously Courland as well. So yea, there were colonies, but not for long and basically more like private entrepreneur than country ambitions to become a colonial power - there were some short-lived more "central" ambitions later to get Madagascar for Poland with some pressure put on it, but it ultimately failed.
I'm Kassubian and probably most distinctive thing about us aside from clothes and some traditions is that we have our own seperae language, tought is chools and used in poetry, literature and even church sometimes.

EU funds was a big thing like 10 or 5 years ago we manage to spend it well on our roads and infrastructure. Today EU funds are less visible.
Right now we can see abroad investments, also war in Ukraine is a big thing whitch we manage to use for our improvments (military purchase and technology transfer from Korea).
Tourism also begin to increase, so feel free to visit Warsaw, Krakow etc. I was born in Grajewo whitch is righ next to Prostki (historical Prussian city) and architecture diffrences are visible by every 1km.

We don't have "the strongest bond" with any of our neighbours. With Germany if i had to choose, but history taught us to always be careful with them... We are cool with almost all the others with exception of Russia and Belarus - you know the drill. With Ukraine we had our ups and downs and there are mixed feelings among Poles in that regard. Remaining ones are the ones we like, respect and are cool with, but not really doing much business together.
I'd say we have weird relations with our neighbours: we hate russia, lithuania doesn't like us, belarus and ukraine are still kinda considered parts of russia, we make fun of czechia and slovakia (really like them tho) and there still is that harsh past between us and germany. However, as I've been in all of those countries, I think that we all lowkey love eachother because of many similarities like culture, cuisine, language etc

About religion in Poland:
My country for almost one thousand years (minus 123 years of the partition) was a melting pot of ethnic groups, languages, cultures and religions. During II world war 85% of Jews murdered by nazis were Polish and soviet citizens, but in fact before the partition of Poland most of the soviet Jews lived in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
Apart from very important culturally and economically Jewish minority, in 1939 Poland had huge Ukrainian, German, Belarusian minorities plus Silesians who are today not recognized like Kashubians only because there are bigger in numbers and close to the southern-western border. The Polish governments try to prevent any signs of separatism that could be the way to Germans getting Silesia back (most of this region has basically different history than the main part of Poland, being controlled by Bohemian monarchs, Austrians Habsburgs and finally conquered by Prussia from Austria).
In Silesia and southern Poland there are significant Lutheran minority. On the east there are Orhodox Christians in more than two denominations. There are also tiny group of Tatars in eastern Poland - islamic Mongolian-Turkic-nomad people who fought so bravely and loyally for Polish kings they got land, titles, privileges and permission to build mosques.
Having such mixed population Poland was pretty tolerant - comparing not to modern standards but to Western European ones. Of course Roman Catholic Church had and has till this moment the upper hand and catholicism was a dominant religion, and as a big dogbit was trying to convert all the minorities with a diplomacy, carrots and sticks. It was effective mostly with the ruling class, Polish nobility containing 10% of population (one of the biggest nobility percentage in Europe), and having most political, economic and culture (influence) power in these lands.
The partition change the role of the catholicism. The institution of Roman Catholic Church as always backed the partitioning states, strong empires against the Commonwealth. For the whole time Popes and hierarchy was all for the Russians, Prussians and Austrians, and always against Polish uprisings and independence ambitions.
Strangely catholicism was in the same time the glue connecting partitioned land adding the spiritual level to the cultural and language elements of the national identity. Austrians were Catholics too, but they were the least oppressive conquerors. Russians were pushing orthodoxy, and Prussians supported lutheranism - and that is why the religion became an important factor.
The independent Poland rise up in 1918 as a still mixed, heterogeneous country - religious, ethnic and culture wise. But in the era of strong nationalism in Europe and in the world Poland were more and more "pushy", aggressively speeding (???) the assimilation process across the board. Doing more harm than good.
After 1945 once again the control of the country was taken from our hand. Stalin wanted strong and stable protectorate west from Soviet Union. Polish borders were pushed west and based on big rivers and mountains (before 1939 we had very long, indefensible and weird border line). Most of Germans ran away or they were forced to emigrate. Germans killed 90% of Polish Jews. Most Ukrainians and Belorussian landed in Soviet Union. Stalin made us homogenous even in the religion area, because those ethnic minorities we lost were also religious minorities (not all of them, but most of them).
And Catholic Church for the first time could say without manipulation and that 90% of Poles are catholic, that Poland is a Catholic country. Communists made us this way. Plus the religion was once again the safe area of protest and showing the communists that they did not conquered Polish souls, the spirit is not broken and identity is still glued to the Sunday mess.
After 1989 the church used its power to influence the politics, the law, education and healthcare system. Omnipresent and above the all, priests became more and more greedy, involved in big business deals and a long list of sexual scandals. That made Poles the fastest nation in becoming a secular society. The attendence in messes is falling lower and lower, as well as the religion classes attendance in public schools. The sentiments are changing and Poland duplicate Ireland way - only 20-30 years later.

They only forgot to mention how World War II ended, that the Poles broke the Enigma code, three mathematicians from the then Polish Lviv developed a mechanical method of breaking this code, and because England already had advanced electronics at that time, it was enough to translate the algorithms of the Poles into the language of the machine created by Turing. Press the "run" button and decipher every move of the German army. Marian Rejewski, Henryk Zygalski and Jerzy Różycki as the programmers and Turing as the electronics engineer defeated Germans. You will not learn this from Hollywood movies falsifying and distorting real true history. They only mentioned that adopted Syrian orphan (Steve Jobs) and a Pole (Steve Woźniak) started the Apple Company, which one time was the most worthy company in the world, is it today... ? P.S. Polish started also Atari and Commodore, he changed his surname though. P.S.2 And also polish (Jan Czochralski) invented the method of producing silicone crystals which are the base of every microprocessor, chip, SoC and semiconductor ever made.

I'm Polish, love my country from the bottom of my heart, but the truth is also, that if you can't find your Place for over 1000 Years, get a bloody nose every 20 years, turn a total dominance into a total partition within 150 years and still bark on the European arena, than you probably did not learn your lessons, too well. Poland was the last to get the catholic religion and is now the last, still to believe. It was last to get scripted documents. But for sure it is central. Central in between Countries who got all this much earlier and could play with Poland just as they wanted.
BY THE WAY, Everybody knows the Rule Birtania Song, which says "Britons never never should be slaves": We saved you this in the Airbattle during WWII. I let the Commader in Chief of the RAF Fighter Command, Sir Hugh Downing, speak: Had it not been for the magnificent material contributed by the Polish squadrons and their unsurpassed gallantry, I hesitate to say that the outcome of the Battle would have been the same. Nevertheless, in order not to anger Stalin, the Poels were not invited to the victory parade in London in 1946, to which the UK invited all its allies, including smaller nations like Luxembourg. This is still unforgotten in Poland today. So bloody nose from the West, too.
