  • HOW TO READ THE HERMIT TAROT CARD
When the Hermit card appears he’s usually telling us that now is a good time to get away from everyone and do some soul searching. We often find ourselves at a crossroads in our lives or questioning some of our core beliefs. The hermit reminds us that we carry our own light of wisdom and truth, and maybe we could benefit from escaping from the confusions of the outside world to look inside for answers.
Another aspect that we saw in the Fool’s Journey is coming to terms with bad things happening in the world. Sometimes we see things that affect us and some time alone can help us to process that.
He also indicates a guide, but not in the same sense as the teacher we encountered at number 5 in the major arcana. While Hierophant imparts knowledge to us, the Hermit actually shows us the way.
The upside down Hermit can indicate the negative aspects of solitude. It’s been said that loneliness is a modern epidemic, and it’s no exaggeration to say that, despite how connected we are in modern times, we’re becoming more and more isolated from each other.
Reversed the Hermit can also mean childishness. Rachel Pollack says ‘Because the card, when the right way up, suggests maturity the Hermit reversed can sometimes indicate a Peter Pan attitude to life. The person hangs on to basically meaningless activities’.
The big takeaway for the Hermit card is the concepts of personal and spiritual growth from taking time out and looking inside ourselves. According to Rachel Pollack ‘The card carries within it a deliberate purpose, of withdrawing to work on self development’.

Like others who've commented here, this card strikes a chord with me big time, and suspect there are a great number of others who are currently in the same mindset. The current zeitgeist of now now now, more more more, is exhausting mentally and spiritually, and though seemingly a very difficult uphill struggle, taking some time to disconnect and become like the hermit seems like a perfect tonic to realign. Brilliant work my friend 👏

How serendipitous that the Hermit card has fallen around this time of year, when everyone is reflecting on the year, and roguery is afoot! Watching this has made me pine to go back on a retreat, and fight the urge to throw my phone in a loch 🏞️ Excellent stuff! ❤️

I have a stupid question for everyone. When doing a read for another, does one deal the cards facing the qurent or the reader? Important for reversals! How does a card get reversed?
Having outgrown the app I had been using, today I received my first deck of Waite-Smith tarot cards. After shuffling, I laid down a 3 card spread, with 3 more added for depth. They were all Major Arcana so I'll need to shuffle more. But to me, they were all reversed. Perhaps they were all muted?
The first card was the Tower, reinforced by Death. The second, the Hierophant, covered by the Hanged Man. The third? I'm 68 years old and drawing a blank. Justice I think. I am going through major changes in my life so the reading is completely appropriate.
I've experienced ego death several times in my life. Time to reinvent myself again.

I'll give you my 2 cents. If you're a beginner I wouldn't worry about reversals until you've got your head around the right side up meanings, as in done a decent amount of consultations for people. There's plenty of good readers out there who don't bother with upside downies.
If you're gonna do them then it depends which way the querent is facing. I usually sit next to people so they look the same to both of us but as long as it's reversed from their perspective it's all good 🃏⛤
