  • Glorfindel was one of the greatest and oldest Elves of Middle-Earth, and he played a iconic part in some of the greatest events of the Lord of the Rings Mythos. He was one of the Noldor Elves that had traveled to Middle-Earth and he would become one of the 12 Lords of Gondolin. His greatest and most famous deed, was the slaying of a Balrog of Morgoth, an act that would cost him his life, and he would be the only Elf in the History of Arda that was sent back to Middle-Earth after their death.

You have answered this beautifully! Thanks for all your hard work and research.He was indeed, an Elf Lord!

    I loved the moment in Fellowship when the Nazgul were crossing the Ford of Bruinen to get to Frodo and Elrond sent the flood. The Nazgul tried to retreat but Glorfindel revealed his true form. I can't remember the words but Tolkien said something about being caught between the flood and an Elf Lord uncloaked drove them mad with fear. I'm sure Frodo was wearing the ring at the time allowing him to see Glorfindel as he exists in the other world.

He chose instead to attempt to join the misguided, probably in hopes to guide them and help mitigate their foolishness. Even after the betrayals he still continued to sacrifice himself and do so elegantly and fiercely. This guys good!

    • @warpig4942
      @warpig4942 4 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      Sticking in Arwen didn't bug me much, but the changing of what happened at the Ford bugged me a lot. In the book Frodo was alone and even in his weakened state he held his ground in defiance against the Nazgul, then The Witch King struck him dumb and broke his sword by magic. Seeing that display of defiance by Frodo would have given us a glimpse into his courage and seeing that display of power would have made the Nazgul more menacing than just scary looking guys riding around.

    Also there was something wonderful of the sound of bells as he rode looking for Frodo et al. It was a needed contrast to the horror of the nine. Yes, he is one of my favorites in Tolkien lore. Glorfindel's story was always one of my favourites, and reading the books after seeing the movie, I was sad to find out they could have used him in the Nazgul scene, but also understand they would have had to then explain who he was, which would have added extra time to the movies. In the 3rd age I believe he was probably the most dangerous warrior of the free people's with only possibly the maiar, good or evil, posing any threat to him. I think Tolkien realised he couldn't use him much in his writing as he had created a deus ex machina level character, so had to come up with a reason not to include him in the fellowship

    Glorfindel has always been one of my favorite heroes of The Lord of the Rings. His absence from the movie adaptations of Tolkein's novels was a HUGE disappointment! That they replaced Glorfindel's rescue of Frodo with Arwen, daughter of Elrond was a huge travesty...because she really had nothing whatsoever to do with that entire situation in the written prose. Ah well, at least we all know the true savior of our little Hobbit hero, Frodo. Had it not been for Glorfindel's swift action after finding Aragorn and the band of Hobbits, Frodo might have become a mini Nazgul.
    This was a very well presented accounting of Glorfindel's life, accomplishments, and character! He's easy to admire!

    Glorfindel was likely to be more powerful than Elrond and the equal at least of Galadriel seeing as they had both been in Aman originally and both left in pursuit of the Silmarills around about the same time. Glorfindel took down a Balrog (as did Gandalf) and that's no easy task. In fighting terms he was very strong. I think overall Tolkien didn't make enough use of Glorfindel. Why send him back to Middle Earth if after helping with the seeing off of the Witch King he spends three thousand years chilling in Rivendell with a rapid mercy mission to save Frodo his only notable action therafter. He was probably capable of so much more. How much we will unfortunately never know. Especially with the passing of Christopher Tolkien.

    I would say after his death and reconstruction, and his millennium and a half of being an all around chill ass guy, enjoying the simple things in life like spiritual attuning and enrichment. I'd say clearly without a doubt hes the most formidable elf in Arda at the time of lotr. Since hes always lead a soldiers life of a captain, hes well organized and tactically minded, with high marks for effective leadership and all its logistics required of ones self. Though as being a born warrior his duties never gave him the time to research scholarly pursuits or learn as much of all the great mysteries of the world. So while having a love of knowledge and a lust to learn all he could of the unknown. While not considering him as unlearned by any means at all, I say his soldiers life made certain that he would never have the time required to be a great and wise scholar. So he might not be able to cure your morgul wound, he could definitely kill the nazghul that did that to you though

    Great video GeekZone! I found that Glorfindel was titlled "Firstborn" which could be a hint that he might be among the first Elves that have awaken. This would make him one of the eldest beeing in Middle Earth but due to the fact that he was reborn might not look that way (e.g. not like Cirdan) although you have mentioned that we was born in Aman during the years of trees. It's odd that he disappears in the first book (LOTR) never to be heard from again. From a movie perspective, it made more sense to have Arwen rescue Frodo. Now that I think about it, Glorfindel and Revan from Star Wars are very similar characters. Both of their origins are shrouded in mystery. They are both natural, incredible leaders and warriors, Revan with his astounding Batlle Precognition as well. Both possessed such a charismatic nature. They both are renowned for their legendary deeds, powers, and wisdom. And both are also fan favourites in their respective franchises.
    Revan is my favourite Star Wars because you know, all things listed above and Glorfindel is one of my favourite Tolkien characters.

    It's interesting that Glorfindel with his rich backstory did not play a larger role in the war of the Ring. I read that Tolkien once conceptualised him as a member of the fellowship but then chose against it for reasons unknown to me.
    From a within-story perspective, I find it hard to justify why he who returned to Middle-Earth - possibly the only elf to do so after the War of Wrath - would face the witch-king but then hold back when Sauron returns.
    My suggestion is that Glorfindel should have joined the Grey Company. I would have loved to hear his perspective on Isengard, the paths of the Dead, and especially Minas Tirith, because it resembles Gondolin in many ways.

    Glorfindel is essential. He is one of the few that plays a meaningful part in every age other than Cirdan. Galady and Elrond with rings are different. As for power, I ran a brackify once. Luthien won, rightfully so, but others probably more “powerful” than Glorfy include Feanor, Fingolfin, Cirdan, Turgon and Earendil depending on if you count mix blood.
    Good video. You didn’t address the conflict of whether he is the same or not, but I agree he is and hold little reason to think he wouldn’t be.

    I had no idea the Glorfindel that found Frodo was THE Glorfindel! I am re-reading the trilogy now (only second time, first time was a 10 years ago), having read the Silmarillion three times over the last decade. I was so surprised to see his name I had to consult the Appendix and Silmarillion. I thought it was younger elf with the same name. Where is the lore that he returned in a new form? The Unfinished Tales? If so I need to read it! Thanks for the great video :)

I have already read the small Hobbit (at least it is called like that I'm German), the lotr of course, the Silmarillion, the book of lost stories, the unfinished tales of numenor and middle earth, the children of hurin, the fall of gondolin and from beren and luthien. Glorfindel is a bit of an anomaly. He is extremely powerful in Middle Earth yet holds a very small part in the story. He is similar to Galadriel and Elrond as being ancient and powerful in spirit and strength yet holds no leadership role that we know.
    I think Tolkien reused the name at the start of the writing of LotR and as the story progressed he decided to intertwine the original character with this one. But it doesn't quite fit because he is a major character playing a much smaller role. The fact that he could not use him in the Fellowship shows how overpowered he is compared to everyone even Gandalf. So Tolkien decided to replace his role as Elf with Legolas.
    I think it is part of Tolkien's mythos that the world was devolving. It had reached its peak in the Second Age and even Sauron, as powerful as he was is only a servant of a greater power. This means that all of those characters in the early stories overwhelm the latter happenings in the Third Age. We see the powerful Elves ruling lands in Middle-Earth but Glorfindel seems almost a hired sword. A soldier owing fealty to Elrond.
    He is very interesting but seems very out of place to me.

    • @kieranh2005
      @kieranh2005 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or that he saw himself as a lesser lord, and Elrond as a high lord worthy of giving his service to. Indicating how powerful Elrond, who had also seen the undying lands, was.
      Elrond could have rightfully claimed the title King of the Noldor.

    • @lusiadagirl
      @lusiadagirl 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kieranh2005 I believe it could not, because he came from the mother's side, and the legacy was from father to son.
      I believe that Glorfindel has surpassed the level of lordship to the adviser of lords, with the resurrection, and to stay nearby in case Sauron returned.

    There were many great elves of the first age. Mightiest of them all was Feanor who made the silmarils. He battled many balrogs at the same time and held his own until Gothmog [lord of balrogs] joined the fray and finally Feanor was slain. Fingolfin was said to be the strongest, most steadfast and valiant. He battled Morgoth himself in single combat and wounded him several times before tiring and finally being slain by the dark lord. Ecthelion fought and defeated Gothmog but was killed in this great deed. Glorfindel is one my favourites along with Fingolfin and would love a tv series or movie[s] based around these incredible characters. We may see Glorfindel in the Amazon tv series which takes place in the second age. Lets hope so.

Feanor fought multiple Balrogs at the same time for days before he fell before the might of the Lord of the Balrogs. A being equal in status to Sauron himself. Feanor was pretty much stronger than all of the maiar and an equal to some of the Valar. That's how powerful Galadriel was as well. Not that she could fight for days like Feanor could, her stamina would let her down.

But i have heard that Sauron himself feared the power of Galadriel so either way, she wins and i believe she could easily handle a lower Balrog.
