Her face when he goes to slow down the attackers... that is the purest, most raw representation of grief and despair I have ever seen in any animated media, maybe ANY media. When contrasted with the muted expression she has at the start of the film, telling the story to 5 year old Mirabel, it's even more powerful.
Just like you, I reacted viscerally to this scene in the movie. I'm bilingual, so being able to understand what the song is saying on top of watching the scene unfold just tore my a$$ up emotionally. I still can't watch it without being completely destroyed.
The moment you fell in love with Isa and her hair in that scene, is the moment I knew you were the TH-camr for me. I thought I was the only one who was obsessed with what her hair does there :)
I won’t ever forget the first time I saw this movie, it was in a theater in New Jersey, in a neighborhood that’s mostly latinos. I’m Latina myself (Puerto Rican/Peruvian). When the scene came up there was not a SINGLE dry eye. Theater wasn’t crowded but I heard so many people sniffing and crying. I cried too. Colombia is a beautiful country, I’m so happy this movie did such a great job portraying a Colombian family!
This entire scene is just so raw and honest it’s beautiful! When I hear the song, I cry. But when I watch this scene, I start bawling the moment I see Abuela Alma and Abuelo Pedro together for the first time
This is part of our history which shaped our lives somehow. This shows "la época de la violencia"/the time of the violence or I don't know if this has any particular name in English but during this time people suffered lots and it was the nest of the next violence periods. People really grieved, I cried so much when grandma lost his husband in front of her, her face shows all the suffering of an entire country... I think Disney did a great job here, I would like someday foreigners understand this and don't just ask about Pablo Escobar and cocaine, of course not all but some of them do (there are very nice and understanding people too)... and of course I would like people stop watching narcos, that's a horrible TV series 😅, really... This is a way people can understand what happened here before just assuming who we are, thank you very much for your review.
This movie definitely made me want to learn more about Colombia. I watched it the other day and immediately ordered One Hundred Years of Solitude. I’m from the US and this song in particular made me want to learn more about our problems at our southern border. It’s hard to imagine the depths of other peoples suffering when the news reads it out like the weather. We become desensitized. This movie showed it in a very powerful but respectful way in my opinion and it definitely left an impression on me.
the vision bruno saw wasn't isabella and mirabel. It was a young version of Abuela. Isabella looked alot like young Abualla , thats why everyone thought the vision was about isabella and mirabel. The candle that burned brighter was the sun that shined brighter in the backround.
I've watched this video at least a dozen times, and I'm a wreck by the time Alma loses Pedro. It was weeks later that I found a site offering a translation of the lyrics, but it really didn't matter; the song could be about the village's garbage collection; it is the TONE and INTIMACY of the song contrasting with Abuela's loss and grief that distroys me. Of course, I'm bawling again as the sun rises, Abuela and Mirabel reconcile, the butterflies are sailing past, and the song breaks in again, this time bravely and with assurance. The Candle seals off the area after dispelling the horsemen, but as the butterflies sail off, a new pass between the mountains is revealed, opening the village to the world. You should also note that Abuela uses this same melody during her verse in "The Family Madrigal".
I loved your reaction to the song and video!!! It is a beautiful movie with so many wonderful meaning but most of all the meaning of family and the realisation that together a family can conquer anything 👏👏👏👏👏 loved it🥰
I used my dad's email with his permission. For people who don't speak Spanish " origitas " are catipilars so when it say " ayy mariposas " it's butterfly so the song is like the catipilar blossoming into a butterfly representing abuela going from mom to grandma. Something about this song connected with me. Every time i hear it i cry.
As a curious fact, the river where Mirabel and abuela Alma actually exist is called "Caño Cristales" , located in the "departamento del Meta" It is also known as the river of 7 colors, it is a Colombian wonder
This hits so different when you're colombian and this happened to you, before came to England I remember my grandpa and my mom took me one night, when I was maybe six, never seen my dad again, and we spend so many nights afriad, that those monsters could find us, thanks for bring it here
I am grateful you did not press pause or comment through this. The song is too powerful to be interupted. It needs to be absorbed. Love Love Love 🦋🕯️✨✨
What little spanish I understand this song just guts me. Life is so cyclical, it's always changing, no matter how beautiful or peaceful, it's all bound to pass eventually ...and I can't take it! 😭
The song has a lot of meaning, especially if you are Colombian. It talks about growing up, transforming yourself, adapting and growing, especially when violence has touched your life as it has happened to all of us in Colombia. Also, for us, butterflies, especially yellow ones, are a symbol. Our Nobel Prize winning writer, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, uses them as a symbol of the resilience of the people of my country, and how we transform pain and sadness into something better and more beautiful. How we have overcome violence and pain to grow as people, as a country, and to move forward in spite of everything.
No joke, i havent cried in over ten years. I was starting to wonder if something was wrong with me. Now i dont know what that clip does but i cant watch it without crying the whole time every time
Fashion Alert: It took me long enough, but I finally noticed - The frames of Mirabel's glasses are the same color as Uncle Bruno's Majik. It seems they can both see more than the average person: Bruno sees the future, Mirabel sees what's in peoples' hearts and their emotional needs.
In Colombia, the guerrillas and the paramilitaries come to the towns to carry out massacres, those of us who had to leave Colombia due to similar situations, we know what this song represents, it hurts my soul not to be able to return to Colombia.
I don't know of anyone that can watch that part of the movie where Abuela's husband sacrifices himself to save his family and not tear up. I cried when I got to that scene.
A lot of people don't know this but this has more deep meaning than surface pressure For example one of the lyric translated to English is "We leave what we love and focus on what is next in life"
This is so sad, the music gets so intense when the invaders come. Actully I did some reasearch it turned out that this took place in real life in 1899-1902, and it was a cicil war. In Italia, we would call this film Lacerato
One more thing (Yes, I'm a wordy nuisance): La casita seems to intuit what everyone's natural Gift is (Luisa was probably a sturdy little girl, Isabella may have had a green thumb as a child; Antonio reportedly is "into" animals), and magically boots it. AGREED, I've been there and nothing was more relatable than that scene to me. I could FEEL it.
If that shocked you, try watching Powder from Arcane. I don't know shit about that animation, but the clips I've watched hit waaaay too close to home
I know that grief scream... even though it's silent I can hear it.
@@marleinasmom sending love ❤️
plus the cello cuts directly into your soul in the same moment. This whole scene is masterfully done

Tearing ass up emotionally is a weird choice of words... but I dig it lmao
Ohh yes! When understanding the song’s lyrics plus the Sebastian Yatra voice’s performance is so strong the emotion

Sebastián Yatra is amazing. I’m in love with his voice and music 🧡 The fact they used him for this movie gave me so much joy in my heart
