Agreed! While they never really specify the exact time the movie takes place in, I really think its in the mid 1900s. (There was a scrapped story idea that supports this)
So, what happened to the town/Abuela Alma and Abuelo Pedro were from, probably happened during the War of a Thousand Days (1899-1903).

Someone said the vision that showed Mirabel hugging Isabella was actually showing Mirabel hugging the younger version of Abuela, finally allowing her to begin healing after all those years.

    • @cheshireneko9381
      @cheshireneko9381 2 ปีที่แล้ว +100

I think she saw both of them. Isabella was just the first step. You could also see that Isabella looks almost exactly like Abuela in her youth, which explains why Abuela expects “perfection” from her. So to start the healing process for Abuela, she had to start with Isabella❤️

She didn't have time to grieve , she lost her home, her husband, part of her heart and everyone was left looking up to her after all that loss, plus she had the little ones to protect and lose too if she was "weak", and while she went at it the wrong way, that's what grief does to some of us, we harden up for our own protection so we are never that vulnerable again, we act tough, and are hard on others because we do not want to lose it all again.

    Two little caterpillars in love
Spend their nights and early mornings together
Full of hunger they keep walking
And navigating a world that changes and keeps changing
And navigating a world that changes and keeps changing
    Two caterpillars stop the wind
    While they embrace with feeling
They keep growing, not knowing when
to search for some retreat, times keep changing
They are inseparable and times keep changing
Ay, little caterpillars, don't hold on anymore
You must grow apart and return, you'll keep moving forwards
    Miracles come, chrysalises come13
You must leave and build your own future
Ay, little caterpillars, don't hold on anymore
You must grow apart and return, you'll keep moving forwards
    Miracles come, chrysalises come
You must leave and build your own future
    Two disoriented caterpillars
    In two well-wrapped cocoons
With new dreams, now all that's missing is
To do what's necessary in a world that keeps changing
Taking down its walls, there comes our miracle
    Our miracle, our miracle
Ay, butterflies, don't hold on anymore
You must grow apart and return, you'll keep moving forwards
There are already miracles, chrysalises breaking open
You must fly, you must find your own future
Ay, butterflies, don't hold on anymore
You must grow apart and return, you'll keep moving forwards
There are already miracles, chrysalises breaking open

Not only because you're crying, but you tell everything with your face (unlike other people who exaggerate and are fake in their enthusiasm and it's so noticeable). This is a great and sad song, showing us how Abuelo Pedro's life was interrupted before it was his time, and how Abuela Alma was broken in pieces and had to carry all that sorrow all those years until she became an old woman.

This song makes me cry every single time. Outright sobbing right now, sometimes it hits harder, haha.
Look up the lyrics for sure - they’re gorgeous! It’s basically an extended metaphor about caterpillars turning into butterflies - how they have to break apart before they can reform into something even more free and beautiful, and how they must accept change because the world and time moves on regardless of whether they feel ready for it or not.
Thanks for the genuine reaction. Can’t even imagine how much more impactful it would’ve been in context for you, oof. (Personally, spoilers like the ones in this and All of You would’ve ruined some things for me, but if you’re not worried that’s your preference!) I hope you enjoy the movie whenever you finally watch it!

This movie moves Colombians, because one of the most emotional scenes in the film reminds us of the displacement and violence that many of us experience as a result of the wars between guerrillas, paramilitaries, drug traffickers and the government. It reminds us of how many of our families lost one of their pillars (Dad) and how Mom had to rebuild her family from the ashes after losing everything. Our grandmothers and mothers are heroines for Colombians, they gave everything to rebuild their families, and our country. That is why the role of the grandmother in this film is important because thanks to all her sacrifices to her great strength, our house is being rebuilt, our beautiful home Colombia.

As a father, myself, this song destroys me every time as well. It is beautiful and amazing, and I love it... but it is the trauma that the whole miracle was rooted in, and it faces the poison that was eating at the beauty that the miracle could have been. That it should have been. Moreso than being a father to two wonderful girls right now, though, when it comes to this song, is being what I call a "father of the heart" to many of my friends over the years. I've helped... a lot of people over the years with their own traumas over the years, doing my best to help them process through it and come back to a place of growth... that is really where this song hits me the hardest. Now, I've largely set that aside for my immediate family. But I still remember.

8:44 is a parallel of Abuela and Mirabel’s earlier argument.
“The cracks started, with you. Bruno left, because of you. Luisa’s losing her powers, Isabela’s out of control, because of you.”
“We were saved, because of you. We were given a miracle, because of you. We are a family, because of you.”
“I don’t know why you weren’t given a gift. But it is not an excuse to hurt this family.”
“Nothing could ever be broken, that we can’t fix, together.”

The lyrics could be about the city's garbage collection; it's the TONE and MOOD of the song, so quiet, intimate, and loving that contrasts with Abuela Alba's love, grief, and strength that tears one apart. Then, the reconcilliation between Abuela and Mirabel literally brings a new day, and the tone of the song becomes joyous. Bring out the crying towels.

This was experienced by our Colombian grandparents and sadly, not so much anymore but it continues to happen thanks to drug trafficking, it is such a destructive plague; families, environment, soldiers etc, just for money. Disney did a nice job with Encanto and thanks to that it is nominated for three categories at the oscars including this song.

Unfortunately, the guerrilla one day burnt part ot the farm and my grandparents had to flee and move with us to the city. The movie remind that situation so I was cried a lot. I might not be a parent, but this is such a painful scene to watch; it still breaks my heart that Pedro and Alma never got to grow old together, that their triplets never got to know their papá...! And Alma ("Abuela") never had a chance to grieve.
And all the refugees... too many families could tell the same story!
This scene (and this song) are powerful enough when you don't understand the lyrics, but the metaphors about two little caterpillars having to go their separate ways in an ever-changing world to reach their full potential despite that they're not ready to let go of each other just hits you...!
This is as powerful as "Remember Me" from "Coco"; both songs/scenes are unbelievably poignant...!

Thank You for making this review, am from Colombia and my father was born in the middle of these violent movements between Liberals and Conservatives; it was one of the darkest periods in Colombian history. Then Narcos took over with Gueriila and Paramilitares is a cycle of political corruption that keeps Colombian people in the middle of the fire . Thank You, Thank You for your review . Abuela cries cause she was so still hang upon her pain that she failed to see the blessings that came from such tragedy like Mirabelle💞💝

That part of "ay origitas no sabienten mas" as her husband died just hits so hard because I believe it translates to "little caterpillars you don't know much" as the song is talking about loosing the love of your life

11:24 The fact that you already kinda guessed one of the touching lines from "All Of You" (Encanto's finale song) which is the miracle being the family themselves all along. Not some magic. Also, so glad to see your reaction and I'm just moved every time with the song so you're not alone.

Hello, I am Colombian and this song moves me to the core because it shows a reality that is lived in my country, abroad we are known for the movies that are made about drug trafficking, but this is the other side of the coin. Displaced peasants, social leaders who lose their lives defending their territories. It is very strong, but it is real and the family in many cases, is the only thing that remains. Colombia is in a process of transformation and we all hope to be able to rebuild ourselves to leave our children a better country.

The meaning of the butterflies is love. The yellow butterflies appear in the great and beloved Colombian novel 100 Years of Solitude. As the love of two of the characters Renata Remedios Buendía and Mauricio Babilonia flourishes the butterflies become more and stronger as the ties love generate between souls. In Encanto they represent the love and will of Pedro.

This movie is so full of amazing details about Colombian culture, fauna, flora... everythig.
In this scene there's the yellow butterflies, a nod to _One Hundred Years of Solitude._ And the colorful river is Caño Cristales, with the reds, pinks, greens...

“two caterpillars” for those who have seen the movie is also in English at the end of the movie during the credits:
    “Two Oruguitas” English lyrics
    Two oruguitas
In love and yearning
Spend every evening
And morning learning
To hold each other
Their hunger burning
To navigate a world
That turns, and never stops turning
Together in this world
That turns, and never stops turning
    Two oruguitas
Against the weather
The wind grows colder
But they’re together
They hold each other
No way of knowing
They’re all they have for shelter
And something inside them is growing
They long to stay together
But something inside them is growing
    Ay, oruguitas
Don’t you hold on too tight
Both of you know
It’s your time to grow
To fall apart, to reunite
Wonders await you
Just on the other side
Trust they’ll be there
And start to prepare
The way for tomorrow
    Ay, oruguitas
Don’t you hold on too tight
Both of you know
It’s your time to grow
To fall apart, to reunite
    Wonders await you
Just on the other side
Trust they’ll be there
Start to prepare
The way for tomorrow
    Two oruguitas
Cocooned and waiting
Each in their own world
Anticipating
What happens after
The rearranging?
    And so afraid of change
In a world that never stops changing
So let the walls come down
The world will never stop changing
(Never stop changing)
(Never stop changing)
(Never stop changing)
    Ay, mariposas
Don’t you hold on too tight
Both of you know
It’s your time to go
To fly apart, to reunite
Wonders surround you
Just let the walls come down
Don’t look behind you
Fly till you find
Your way toward tomorrow
    Ay, mariposas
Don’t you hold on too tight
Both of you know
It’s your time to go
To fly apart, to reunite
Wonders surround you
Just let the walls come down
Don’t look behind you
Fly till you find
Your way toward tomorrow
    Ay, mariposas
Don’t you hold on too tight
Both of you know
It’s your time to go
To fly apart, to reunite
Wonders surround you
Just let the walls come down
Don’t look behind you
Fly till you find
Your way toward tomorrow

Also, the lyrics are available in English on Amazon prime music. It’s under “Two Oruguitas” and it’s about two caterpillars changing into butterflies and finding their way back together; figuring out what tomorrow will bring. It’s beautiful.

My nephew is addicted to this movie, and every time I watch this scene I cry! The song is beautiful, the lyrics tell the story of abuela and her husband, and Sebastian singing is just perfection. Plus I dare to say the part where abuela and Mirabel hug with the butterflies flying around them, is the most beautiful shot I’ve ever seen in a animated movie!

There are translations online, but the general gist is
Two caterpillars fall in love, they get to know each other well but the world keeps changing, there's something special between them.
But to grow you must let go and do your own thing so you can return. Two butterflies, apart, will be together if they keep flying into their futures.
