  • We cover the add9 (and ♭9 and ♯9) chords, with all the triad and ninth combinations, revealing a spectrum from floating, gossamer chords to those hurtling toward annihilation.
Add nine chords are a simple yet potent way to thoroughly transform the character of the basic triads. At the same time, we broach an important point about voicing and enharmonic spelling and the subsequent effect on name and implied function of chords.
Any additional questions on Add 9 chords, feel free to ask in the comments.

I used your rhythm lessons to great effect in my Aural 3 subject last semester. So much going on in music. Your videos are challenging but very well organised and graded. Hence learning is possible with some regular practice and application of the concepts and skills.

@Saher Galt So when you add the 13th to the bass, would I be correct in saying that it's a 13th and not a 6th because its below the natural root?

    What's the difference between add9 and add2?

Technically, proximity of the added note to the root. Cadd2 has the D a second away from the root (CDEG). Cadd9 has the D a ninth away from the root (CEGD).
