    Lance & Patrick,
    No worries on the long videos. I enjoy every minute you guys produce.
    As for the military packaging, there are several reasons for the methods they require. One, and the primary reason is for corrosion prevention. You were right about that. The US Military has units in virtually every climate in the world at any given time and each part they order passes through many environment changes before it reaches its destination so secure packaging is absolutely vital to ensure optimum condition. I knew the final covering would be cosmoline. Everything metal gets slathered in the stuff for preservation. Hint: Lacquer thinner works best for removing it. It will take a good wash before you get it all out of the bearings. Another reason has to do with inventory standards in the military. Package identification, dates, supply shelving and storage; everything has a designation to identify it. Every number, letter or mark means something for its path through the military system.
    Additionally, the over the top packaging is to insure against damage during shipment and delivery to its destination. Consider the fact that most of the supplies and material we received in a combat zone in Vietnam came via sling nets and drop released from helicopters which often could never land due to heavy fire. We called that a Hot LZ. Even under peaceful conditions the people that move shipping containers in the military are not usually too concerned with careful movement and sometimes conditions are not the best.
    I remember requesting wheel bearings for my Jeep and was presented with eight cans by the supply sergeant similar to, though larger, than the tins your bearings were packaged in.
    It seems ridiculous but it’s necessary. Consider the fact that I received my wheel bearings at a remote outpost where the dust on the road in front of supply was 14 inches deep during the dry season and a river of mud during monsoon season. Soft packaging would have rendered those bearings unusable under those conditions. Even PX items such as potato chips, nuts and cookies were packaged metal tins. All beverages such as soda and beer were packaged in steel cans not aluminum with no pop tops. Everyone had a can opener on their key ring.

      Hello Dale Griggs, you got it the heart and the pinned comment to the top of the page. We do not take either of these TH-cam functions lightly. You get the heart for serving your country and being a mechanical person, then you got our Pinned to the top of the page because your answer if the best example, maybe better then we could have hoped for, you not only know the reasons for the Government identification and packaging but you actually utilized it as well while serving, that makes you this person for this weeks video, thank you for being here and for being our friend, Lance for Lance & Patrick.

    Beautiful machine and really nice work. I had no idea there were any quality collets that small, but it makes sense. Watchmaking machinery is a whole other world.

      Yes we too realized Dudley Toolwright (what is your actual name) in the Simi Valley that many machinist were very unaware of the pin point accuracy we must hold and how our collets many so small they appear to be blank like they have no hole in them actually do. Hearing you share this comment about our collet sharing tells us that we need to share in more detail these little things we just take for granted. Inside track for our fellow TH-cam creator, we are stepping outside of the home converted into a full machine shop watch this nights video likely Tuesday since you and us both live in California we share why we have some things and show some expansion but some things we cannot share as we do not see them safely clear going forward just yet time will have to be our guide here and the hard work it is going to take as well. We are both so happy you are here. Lance for Lance & Patrick.

    Good to see Patrick out front. Your videos are so interesting we watch every detail. You need a SMOOTH EDGE CAN OPENER, it cuts through the side of the rim and allows you to reclose the can. Sweet finds on the bearings and the drawbar/sleeve. Loose spindles are a Harbor Freight specialty. LOL I found several micro drills in one of my purchases. Do not be envious of that drill press though for being as old as it is it does drill one perfect hole after another in part because it now has those new oilite or oil impregnated bronze bearings we machined and installed.

      So you know we are not machinery re-builders or refurbish guys though we are trained in it.
      See we are upgrading these machines and tools, so we can being making our product (product not shared yet) it is from a book of pencil sketches we drew while making parts in our shop for the watch movement, timing device and instrument gauge industries i.e. the clients we no longer do outside work major step for us both, we will now finally after near 3 decades of making things and fixing other things for others, begin machining the components for our first in-house designed product hope you can join the two of us while we embark on this fine precision product build code named for now "The Perfected Product".

    I like the green on the drillpress! You all have quite the hoard of tooling! Solid rock is awesome and I am sure would have helped if needed. Surprised you all don't have a mini cylindrical grinder.

    • @ActiveAtom
      @ActiveAtom  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Brian if you had this drill press in your shop it would get lost under the Monarch Lathe, that lathe is huge and it is going to turn some giant and great parts for your business to be sure. We do have a cylindrical grinder no it is true we really do, let us not get carried away with these visions of giant grandeur, it is on the micro scale we have a Levin lathe bed live tooling grinding head so we can grind between centers to really tight tolerances.
      However the 8mm draw bar would have been ok to do longer and larger in diameter to what we are comfortable try to like watch movement parts (we know too small for Brian LOL maybe Bailey oked first) and such sizes so that is why we nearly went out after machining a new one to Solid Rock Steve and the family to help us.

      Hello fellow TH-cam creator Chuck (our answer is a bit long because this is your first question or comment to us and we are of course thankful you are sharing here) Patrick first has watched Chuck since he began making videos he is a true gentleman to the community.
      Your answer:
      I am thinking there is video but a little shot here and one over there so what I would rather share is what we have in the Machine Shop.
      There are two shops that do only machining currently the Workshop think real clean small micro and the Machine Shop larger new and growing.
      Before we start though we always have room for a Monarch 10EE and your friends Rose Engine just saying here. LOL.
      The Machine Shop that is newer to larger machining started that 2 years ago when we pulled our 400 AMP 3 Phase power, started lightly.
      We have at the moment a support lathe, a not so Precision Mathews 11 swing 27 length and a little table top CNC 4 axis mini TAIG mill (we do SolidWORKS CNC Programming as well, sharing so you know what we are building up to here. We have room for a CNC Lathe and a CNC Mill or two, think German here, an American made bead blaster machine, magnetic parts tumbler, American made titanium anodizing station and an American made air compressor Quincy.
      The CNC machines are something that we are going to have to earn through this journey of making a micro mini product code named "The Perfected Product" that will begin after the manual machines that make them are completed in refurbishing and rebuilding here. Your friends Lance for Lance and Patrick.

I know when it comes to leaven your tools machines a legacy of things if we must to the next generation there is one single thing Patrick and I have observed.
      Younger people see money in these tolls and machines, not passion until they are in there later years then they wish they had kept dads old tool box or machine or whatever. We believe If the youth can be deterred for say a decade or two after you or us have departed then they will feel the attachment the actual true value of these fine pieces of history even if that history is confined to within the family nearest us mostly. We are so saddened over your broken gear we are equally happy however you are going to be able to fixit, never had a doubt about that. The milling, grinding, drilling attachment is so neat and as we share one of only two ever seen by us two anyways in 30 years so we cannot wait to share it working in action again. Yes Patrick used that cut off wheel smelled up the whole shop for a bit but nothing can stand in the way of these two trouble makers on their journey Peter. The cans, US Government sealed cans were so great and to get to open one see what is inside and then share it with you all, never could have seen that when it was packaged in 1967 to say the least Peter. Clean the Cosmoline out and re grease cautiously those bearings and we are going to be great going forward. Your machine is going to machine a new gear it is really amazing to watch your channel Peter.

No regrets though as I’ve had a great life with many opportunities and am now enjoying my retirement doing things I enjoy.

    Military packing really impressed me. Congrats on the project is done! Have question, maybe you already mentioned it... but how many maximum RPM the drill press gives?

    • @ActiveAtom
      @ActiveAtom  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi our friends your micro drill press question is a GREAT one because we did not thick to mention it, we use a two step pulley on the motor shaft, it is a one to one and a two to one as the one to one matches the spindle pulley. The RPM is as follows for this little might mouse the 1 to 1 is 1750 RPM and the 2 to 1 is then 3500 RPM. Patrick says great question and we hope this answer shares a great understanding about this little drill press. Your friends in the states Lance & Patrick.

    Can I ask Patrick what his view is on the accuracy of ER collets and whether they are used in your workshop.

    • @ActiveAtom
      @ActiveAtom  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Mr Carpathian you are a very good person smart and with vast knowledge one we are thankful is here enjoying our show Shop Adventures.
      Here is what the collets do in our view, we do have ER collets but they are used i our in-house built TAIG CNC table top Milling machine.
      This is Lance and in my aerospace job shop past we too utilized larger ER collets in 45 taper and 50 taper collet holders for gripping smaller mils, drills, reamers and such.
      ER collets were originally designed as a tool holder since 1973 by Rego-Fix as tool holder so they are more for holding standard shank diameters sizes like boring bars, cutters, drills, reamers, center drills and such, and the secret to an accurate ER collet in or experience is the way they derive at the minimum and maximum tolerance so an example would be you have a 2.0 mm ER collet, it holds its best tolerance at 2.0 mm in the natural spring-less state, once you expand the collet or shrink tighten the collet the tolerances that are factory claimed greatly diminish through deformation of the spring steel.
      The sizes of the precision collets we use are more for holding the raw stock in the machines not the tools, so more sizes are highly available and these are more costly having to buy far more as well because you cannot expand or contract the openings in our collet types like you can with an ER collet type.
      The sizes available for each are drastically different meaning, say for this example, we use 5C, 3C, D, WW and 6mm, in the Machine Shop and the Workshop at Active Atom.
      These come in incremental sizes in every .1mm size.
      Thank you for writing to us about this collet question and we hope the answer is satisfactory.
      Patrick & Lance

    Noticed in several of the videos that you've got what appears to be a Proxxon Bench Grinder in the background...
    As the happy user of a Proxxon Lathe, Mill & other accessories, I'd been considering getting that very same Grinder...
    ...curious to know what you're mostly using it for & whether you consider it as a worthwhile purchase?
    regards Colin

      Hi Colin Creed Tattoo Machines thank you for being here (sorry I am late to answer) to share in this journey of two childhood friends one with a single tattoo and one without one yet for now here.
      Proxxon is trusted here, we have a few of these grinder units around the shop, even one in the electronics shop, we use them for everything you would use a Dremel for and more.
      We have the power shafts and many accessories to do fine grinding on metals, plastics, Phenolic, cleaning micro threads, polishing some surfaces and we even have the Proxxon mini belt sander well we are a micro machining operation so small is a GREAT thing here. Thank you for your great question Tattoo Machines are neat tools. Lance for Lance & Patrick.

    You guys have me very interested in finding a drill press like that. I have been looking and not found one yet. That loops looks like an interesting alternative to my Optiviser.

      Hi Robert, oh we love that drill pres and in fact we also have a similar tapping machine like that one.
      Both are from Germany and hey here s something I cannot recall sharing from within the Shop Adventure shows about that micro-drill press.
      The head goes up and down, generally even the ones we see that are those forged column types the table is spring loaded making its way upward towards the spinning stationary drill spindle.
      Robert we thank you for watching our shows and for enjoying the conversations via these comments, it means quite a bit to us both.
      Lance & Patrick.

    Hi guys, please excuse my ignorance but can you tell me what that gray tray looking device is with the T-slot insert on top? It is most visible at about 38 min into the video on your right side of the drill press. Thanks

    • @ActiveAtom
      @ActiveAtom  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Kip you are not a bad guy, your question is like all questions in our opinion, a GREAT one to us and we are happy you asked it. This is Lance from Lance & Patrick at Active Atom.
      That "T" slotted bed is for a Levin Lathe a company still in business here in the Los Angeles, California area, and while they still make this 18" inch lathe bed called an instrument lathe length and style lathe bed in the video (thank you for sharing the 38 minutes in to help us share this with you) the chip tray it is mounted to is no longer made or sold and are often sought after by Levin & Son 18" inch lathe bed owners.
      The reason we mention the specific length of 18" inches is due to the fact the company makes a shorter 13" bed length (not a watchmaker lathe either) and while the company got its start from making watchmaker tools single leg lathes for optics, aviation gauges and watchmakers in 1917 forward.
      The Levin bed and the chip tray as well as the lathe headstock (not in that video shot) are all made of a grey iron material to a very high stander of casting named Meehanite process and certification ne of the most stable iron casting methods known today.
      Kip we are both happy to have you here with us and look forward to hearing from you in the future as we are beginning to make new videos (after just over 1 year away) as we have been busy working on a lot of items preparing to start making our first company made product after nearly 30 years (since 1993) of doing work for others.
      Lance & Patrick.

      Hi Richard Shephard. We are really glad you are enjoying the videos and commenting. We love to (never thought we would be saying this) make these videos, adding new video features and such every two to three weeks to keep the channel and the videos as interesting as we can. We are not video film editors not even picture takers up until well, until this all happened now after doing what we do here researching, reviewing, reading, watching, buying, trying and practicing we are making videos even taking still images for our Instagram page as we learn all of this and that about social media stuff.
      The handle of the micro drill press is shorter then that video would have you and I believing, it is really shot and it is within the 12.00 inch x by 18.00 inch mounted cutting block dimensions not even enough room for a Styrofoam cap with a hole in it on the end. Thank you Richard for being here and sharing with us and the others. Lance for Lance & Patrick.

    Patrick, where did you find the Boley drawbar? One off or something that there are multiples of? When I moved away from Dallas I lost the drawbar for my Boley F1. I have a replacement that works, but I'm not best pleased with it.

      Hi Adam, Patrick here again. Sorry for the delay, I tried to contact the seller today to get more details but no response. But I can tell you that the seller only had 2 of these drawbars but I actually purchased both of them since he gave me a good price to purchase both. I actually only needed one for the drill press but I figured I would keep the extra one for a backup. I'm more than happy to sell it to you since you can make better use of it than me sitting on it and I really doubt I'll ever need it. I'll just charge you my cost (I think you'll be surprised how cheap) plus shipping so if you are interested, please email me at the company email at info@activeatom.com and I'll respond to you from my personal email.
