I don't live in the Lake District, I live in South London and our local chippie is really struggling. The cost of oil, fish, energy, rent, business rates etc has shot up. I'm not in a wealthy area, government data puts us as one of the most deprived areas of the UK. The chippie rarely sells fish nowadays and cooks it to order from frozen although it used to be fresh fish. If people can afford a visit it's just chips. It's been a chippie for generations and it probably won't survive the year. I have sympathy for the customers as well as the chippie as Ambleside is a tourist area and possibly tourists are paying over the odds to keep it going off-season. Fish and chips used to be food for the poor. Not any more, sadly.

Great video - APPROVED 👍 Back in our younger days, fish and chips was a weekly event wasn't it. I moved from the Midlands to Bournemouth and everything was in bags boxes or trays. It's amazing how something as simple as not being wrapped in paper can destroy a culinary experience. The price in the 2010s was the same but portion size shrunk drastically then. I'd never ordered a large chips in my life until the move, now a large chips is still smaller than what we used to get pre-millenial.
Now at 52 and watching my size, fish and chips both in price and calories is a very rare treat. Twice a year maybe? Yours did look good I have to say. For the price, I'd opt for a wetherspoons and get a steak and chips with drink thrown in. Although you won't get the view.

@@BaldFoodieGuy Doesn't surprise me though the cost of that, though a little on the high side obviously. I went to my local chippy on Sunday night and a small chips is now £3 up from £2.30 when I last bought some (that was some time ago, can't exactly remember when though) What was a rip off though was the Jumbo sausage price though. I paid £3.80 for 2 back in the winter time and those had gone up from £1.30 each back in late summer/early autumn (I think),well now they are £2.50 each, so would cost you a fiver for 2. Way over priced seeing as they are frozen ones too, so cheaper than fresh ones.
Then again it doesn't surprise me that they are charging that as seeing a news report the next day a butchers and bakers shop's energy costs had gone from £30k a year to £96k, so how are small businesses meant to survive?

Just returned from the UK this week. It was my first visit. Tried fish and chips in London (the King's head pub, Kensington) for 18.50£.
Then we went to Stratford upon Avon and tried fish & chips at a pub called Rose & Crown for 15.50£ and another chippie called Kingfisher for around 9.50-10.50£.
Next we went to Cardiff and tried the Traditional Fish And Chips At The Hayes for 9£.
Rest of our trip to Dublin, Belfast and Edinburgh we skipped fish and chips. As Indians who grew up watching cartoons, reading comic books and playing video games, we were sooo excited to try fish and chips in the UK. But it was sooo costly and not the best tasting, that we decided to call it quits after trying 4 times.

Hi . I really enjoyed the video , especially on such a beautiful day .
As for the price of fish and chips I did hear a few years ago that they were the one thing that had gone up way above the rate of inflation than anything else .
When I was 8 in 1972 they cost 12 pence per time from our local chippy in Holmfirth , Yorkshire and as someone else rightfully said ' fish and chips were for poor people ' .
I went onto a money inflation website and £0.12 in 1972 now equates to £2.03 in 2023 . I do admit the food you bought looked lovely but at even twice the price ( £4.06 ) there is a difference between that and £13.95 !!
Look forward to more videos ! Thanks .

Lovely trip out! Yes, do more. I pay £9 for cod and chips locally, no mushy peas. But there where you were, you're paying tourist prices. I haven't found any bones in fish from a chippy for years. Very rare. Even the fresh fish I buy each week hardly ever has a bone. But £3.95 for the chips is outrageous and you didn't get a lot for a portion. Mind you, I just had to pop down to Tesco just now and Jersey Royals are £2.60 for 1kg. So I'll wait till I go to Lidl where Alfred Bartlett Jersey Royals are only 69p for 450g.

I live in East Sussex in one of the UK's biggest holiday spots. There are several chippies down on the sea front, or close to it, that have really hiked up their prices. I live within a 5 minute walk from the marina, which does get busy. But the area I live isn't part of the tourist route. However, a minute walk from my home, I have a Chinese, a Kebab shop, a Chippie, a Chicken shop, an Indian, and a Domino's Pizza. They are all small takeaway outlets, but really handy. I haven't seen a great increase in their prices though. You can still get fish for under £5 and chips for under £2. OK, they may not be the best fish and chips in the world, but they are tasty and filling. 👍👍👍. By the way 4 X fish and chips would have cost you £55.80. 🤔🤔.

In fairness that's not uncommon, and when you consider the price of the fish relative to the chips, it's actually the chips that we are getting royally shafted on. Even near me, modestly close to the East coast but definitely not close enough to be a tourist trap, by the time you've bought your fish, chips, peas, curry, bread and butter and whatnot, it's those kinds of prices. Just is what it is, and like most price rises, people are just using it as an excuse to take the piss and massively overcharge. But, like idiots, we pay it anyway so who can blame them?
