Orepuki - Southland

Located on the Southern Scenic Route in the deep south is a little settlement called Orepuki. Located between Tuatapere and Monkey Island, you'd be excused if you missed it completely.
All that is left of a once-bustling township of 3,000 residents, is a tavern and cafe.
We stopped off on our travels to stay the night behind the Orepuki Tavern. They love hosting travellers and welcome you with a warm fire, local hospitality and great food.
We enjoyed a walk the next morning, exploring the eroding cliffs, long sweeping beaches and crashing surf. It's a great loop walk down to Gemstone Beach and back along the road.
Make sure to suss out the decaying buildings (from afar) and stop and read the history boards which have some amazing photos of what this township once looked like back in its heyday.
Orepuki is 'small town' NZ at its best. Thanks for having us.
