Yeah! Don’t you think we could figure out a way to capitalize on this with RVs.... without driving our rigs up & down the same hill over and over again?
I love how Canadians take the KISS principle and tell it to go screw itself lol. I agree with the previous poster in that this is ridiculously cool. You have my vote for more videos like these!
We live about an hour away and our one daughter goes to college in Peterborough ...it is a very cool engineering marvel indeed and a very neat story behind it as well(kinda sad too at the same time)...I will say this I never realized it wasn't powered and used the weight the way it does....learn something new every day lol Safe Travels
My hometown! I was shocked to see this on your site guys! Thanks for sharing. I feel Ike I just went home!! Lots to do there! Enjoy the fall colours! Every spring they stock the water below the lift with trout and have a kids weekend fishing derby. In the winter they drain it most of the way and it's a hockey / skating venue.
Wow, so impressive! I have never seen a hand operated lock before, or a swing bridge for that matter. So cool. Thanks for the tip, looks like a great experience! -Brad
I miss your beginning videos where you helped us in taking great care of our motorhomes. Please come back to what made you great. A fan of your old videos.
This is exactly what I needed to see. If I had been there in person, I would not have got this much. Of course, actually being there would be a different type of experience; but what I mean is that this video shows everything one is curious to know about something as spectacular as this lock.
Old, elegant, and still functioning. I wonder how much maintenance is involved? Here in the States, our infrastructure doesn't seem to hold up that long. So interesting to see - perfect for a Tuesday elementary school auditorium showing. ;=)
Great tour and insights! Really enjoying following the RV Geeks “across the pond”. 😃 The narrows boat tour looks particularly intriguing. Can’t wait for that episode! Cheers!
Our cottage is about an hour northeast of Lock 21. You can camp overnight in the lock parking lots for free or $5 per person, depending on the staff. Thanks for the excellent videos. Sandra
A little further North, and you could have visited Sudbury, The Big Nickel, The Big Nickle Mine, Science North, the Art Gallery, and the Railway Museum. Maybe next year, or the year after.
Oh my goodness!! We did the lock in early July. Our daughter lives within walking distance of Beavermeade. Wish we had know you guys were there! Safe travels!
I caught my first musky on those waters, Buckhorn also has the best ice cream at the lift locks. There is also a free zoo in the city, with a water pad for the kids and a train ride for kids.
It's certainly amazing engineering! Shame you couldn't have got up to the Anderton Boat lift here in the UK during your stay (shared a video with you some time ago) Perhaps your next visit could be to hire a narrowboat ;)
The lock is pretty close to silent, and the campground is a little ways away, so it would be impossible to hear it. It’s definitely not close enough to see either, but not a terribly far walk.
I don't understand the use case of this? Maybe so that not much power is required for ship to go uphill a river? Wow, that is impressive engineering. Really great video. Kudos to you :)
What's amazing about the Lift Lock is that is requires no power to raise and lower the caissons. It's all done by gravity. They fill the upper chamber one foot higher with water than the lower chamber. The weight of that extra water makes the upper chamber begin to lower down, and its weight forces the lower chamber to move upward. It's brilliant, and allows the lock to raise and lower boats a LOT in just one lock.
We're not certain, but we think there may be other locks that may require power. One thing we ARE sure of is that you can't operate the locks yourself, as we did in England.
I was Homeless for a Year in Peterborough, there are alot of issues with that city. Shelters contain alot of drug users, tatoos, previously convicted, bueratistic and dogmatic abuse. I didnt like it. I plan on vesseling to avert continued destitution from Canada Ontario. I (SciVegan, aka taboosaboo kcpm) call it My SciVessel, My gateway to a Vegan and Scientific path of independent living.
It would have been "nice" [as it were] to have been able to see the lock in action, without the intrusive text on top of it, and without interrupting it, just as it gets started, to cut to video [video?] of a SIGN, telling us where we are. How about a [very, VERY] BRIEF explanation at the beginning, and then some [UNINTERRUPTED] time-lapse video --- with ***ZERO*** narration?
Ingenious! I used to live in Peterborough and I am still amazed by the lift locks!
That's pretty cool how they engineered that. No power required...awesome. I'm going to tuck that idea away for future reference. Thanks!

This is about the coolest thing I’ve ever seen!
I miss your beginning videos where you helped us in taking great care of our motorhomes. Please come back to what made you great. A fan of your old videos.
Don’t worry! We’ll still have mostly how-to videos, but with a few travel and destination videos mixed in!
What an amazing engineering feat! The other lock and the swing bridge complement it well. Fun!

Love it!! I was amazed at how old it is. I would never have guessed it.

Thanks Belle! Can't wait to share that one!!! 😃
what a cool lock system; and NO power! Would be something special to experience. Thanks so much for sharing! Y'all Be Safe!

That is so cool. I'll make it there one day. Thanks for the video.
Another great informative video. Really found that 65' foot lock amazing.
Oh my goodness!! We did the lock in early July. Our daughter lives within walking distance of Beavermeade. Wish we had know you guys were there! Safe travels!
We were there July 5&6. Sorry we must have just missed you! We sure do love it there. 😊
Maybe next time - we hope you guys come back!
So much for new ideas, the Anderton Boat Lift was opened in 1875. It was the first operating boat lift in the world. ( UK ).
Great video. That lock is amazing, thanks for sharing. Have fun!
Wow, absolutely amazing. That's going on our "to do" list!
Great video...Thank you and welcome to Ontario.
The Lift Lock is very cool!!
We loved watching this! Great photography!
Fantastic, and I have locked through a few on Canal du Midi
That was really cool! Nikki and Jason now must be jealous ;)
I caught my first musky on those waters, Buckhorn also has the best ice cream at the lift locks. There is also a free zoo in the city, with a water pad for the kids and a train ride for kids.
Very interesting. Thanks for showing and explaining this.
Added to my Canadian RV retirement map.
It is really amazing and beautiful place with lot of fun. I
centainly would like to visit this lift lock when I next visit to Mississauga from India.
It's certainly amazing engineering! Shame you couldn't have got up to the Anderton Boat lift here in the UK during your stay (shared a video with you some time ago) Perhaps your next visit could be to hire a narrowboat ;)
Next time! 😉
... or the equally impressive Falkirk Wheel in Scotland.
That is so cool.
We are about 2 hours from this amazing lift lock. Didn't know you were up this way.
Sorry we missed you, Jerry!
Looks like a fun trip. I've visited Canada before, but never Ontario. I'll have to check it out. :)
My 2nd Cousin Rochatd Birdsail Rogers designed the lift locks.
Cool!
Love your videos keep sharing
Amazing I'm very close to moving too Peterborough or somewhere in this area soon due to how expensive BC has gotten.
Amazing Thank You
We love to travel in our RV we have to Visit this place
Great video! With this weather you’ve shown here, it couldn’t have been mid-October could it? Lol.....
Very observant! It was in July. 😉
Very interesting lock system. Could you see or hear it from the campground?

I wished I’d known you were in our backyard! When were you guys there?
Sorry Allan... we were there in July. Sorry we missed you.
Congratulations on your new adventure ( PBS) . Hopefully you will not come in contact with the CAT
Thanks! But... the cat?? 😽🤔
That is Cool
If I had of known I would have stopped by and gave you a tour of the area I’m 5 minutes from beavermead
Thanks so much for the thought! Sorry we missed you.
my fathers home until his passing.. brother lives in Lindsay..
I just want to know if it's even possible for the geeks to make a bad video 😁
Awwww. 😊
No power? Amazing.
Can you navigate the whole canal with no power?
Hypothetically, could you navigate the canal/ the locks on your own?
We're not certain, but we think there may be other locks that may require power. One thing we ARE sure of is that you can't operate the locks yourself, as we did in England.
I live in Peterbourgh
Lucky you!! What a beautiful town. 😊
FYI = Maria Street is pronounced Mariah with a long i sound not a short i sound. Like Mariah Carey
That is like 1 min away from me idk y I am watching

I just LOVE stuff like this, Geeks!! Meanwhile... The Brits have one-upped us North Americans AGAIN!! th-cam.com/video/qHO9gARac-w/w-d-xo.html
Bevermeid or however you spell it is gross. I have swam there so many times- so much trash.

It would have been “nice” [as it were] if you made your own video, rather than making an intrusive comment.
