There was a really fun fan made remake made in 2002 that was free to download but I can't find the download anymore and I also seem to recall it having issues running on Windows 10 :( Edit: I actually did find a link, it's called 3D Monster Maze by Demon Star and I found a link on Mobygames. No clue if it works.

Everyone's talking about remaking the game, but i think most forget that an important factor on the horror is the quick camera snaps and the fast deaths (no screamer, no animation, you just die) without those two it would be just a generic horror game
If a remake is ever to be made it should keep the simple graphics, camera snaps, lack of sound and frame rate, but add more unique mechanics (Like other ways to escape beside the portal or stealth), more visiuals (keeping the simple pixel artstyle but with things like flickering lights, blood splater, diffrent colors for diffrent mazes) and an ending.
I read a comment about this and think it's a good idea. Instead of not changing much, the game should be made to be extremely dark and hard to see, barely enough to know where you are going, and making the only lights the white eyes and mouth from rex and maybe the portal. Perhaps a dim light could be added in the turns so if you see Rex,you don't see any details other than its silhouette. And to give more life to the maze itself maybe do as you say and give hints that you are not the first one there.
I like that Rex looks really spooky and shit with the eyes, but then his actual design is super goofy
I think Rex's simplicity goes a long way to what makes him scary. It's something I've thought about a lot when reflecting on what scares me - and the simplicity of Rex's design fits right into that niche. In all honesty, I think a more updated animation with a more realistic dinosaur would look less scary, as Rex's lack of detail does so much for him.
Exactly. It would be like trying to make a HD Baldi's Basics game. It just wouldn't work.
I think it's because of the horror of incomplete knowledge. *Something* is after you, but you can't see what it is or what it looks like until it's too late. If you could see an actual flesh-and-blood creature, part of your brain could latch onto "Okay, I can beat this thing! It's big and dangerous, but it's only an animal like me!" or similar thoughts at different levels of confidence. When you never see it, you don't know what it's capable of or what its weaknesses are.

Translating this game to 3D probably won't have the same effect. Rex's vague silhouette that only has teeth and eyes barely defined is way scarier in 6 fps than 60 fps
My suggestion would be make the game incredibly dark with bright lights coming from rex and the environment to mask his true shape, and also make him move incredibly fast so you wont have much time to look at him. Horror is at it's best when you can't tell what the monster truly is
How about this:
Give it an upgrade while keeping the style. So same black, white, and gray pixelated walls but looking more like ImScared or Spooky's Jumpscare Mansion then a Gameboy game or Resident Evil
Then, keep the monster's design the exact same, making them look _bizarrely_ out of place, even down to the 6 FPS movement.

1916 actually reminds me of this book I read back in high school. I forgot the title, but the story was literally just "What if Napoleon Bonaparte had dinosaurs?" and the story was about the people fighting off a t-rex in their village. The book was sadly underwhelming to me, but the idea is so stupid that it circles around to being awesome and even horrifying. If anyone knows what I'm talking about, that'd be great!

Jumpscares that have no sound and are abruptly cut off by "YOU ARE DEAD" are easily my favorite. This game scratches my itch for obscure awesomeness that I've had for a long while.

The same year this game released there was actually another game that came out and is considered one of the first survival horror games, it's called Uchuu Yusousen Nostromo. I think it's also worth mentioning Clock Tower, sure, Alone in the Dark came out before it, but it's significant nonetheless.

I really love looking at this game for what it is. The awkward graphics of your hunter that seems to twist and grin with its toothy maw, the messages that pop up that are vague enough to instill creepy feeling because you aren’t sure just how close he is, only that he is somewhere near or far. Being told he is tracking you brings panic. He’s also totally silent.

This game has a creepy feel to it with text as simple but so creepy simply saying: “Rex has seen you” is something I feel newer horror games just can’t capture that feeling of unease.
It’s interesting because a lot of modern horror games borrow from the simple concepts of this game. Also this game is awesome mainly bc any game with dinosaurs is automatically awesome. 💜-Dr.G

1916 is actually a really good game. Although it is short, it combines fictional horror with real theme's, blending one of the most terrifying times and places in history with relentless creatures which will take any opportunity to kill you. You need a gas mask to get through certain areas, and the only way to stop the armoured raptors is by either shooting them with your rifle (limited ammo) or by distracting them with a human limb you've pulled off a corpse of one of your fellow soldiers. It's very surreal, I recommend you check out Batesee's play through of it, he may have stopped TH-cam videos but his channel is still up.

You see what makes it creepyer is the lack of sound, no weird alienish ambiance, no chase theme, no sounds coming from rex, just silence as he charges towards you, and his not very derailed sprite actually makes him creepyer
There is no contest for me, this IS the scariest game ever. No emotion, no sound, simple sprite art & basic explanations. It goes so far. The tight corridors giving a blastophore like me nightmares. No horror game amounts to the fraction this game does. This is a creepy pasta game far before its time.
Dude when I tried it I managed to get 1215 points after losing him for a while and when I forgot Rex existed I round a corner to see that creepy fucking face.
I think the fact that there's not even an 8-bit tune or even any noises to go with the game makes it even creepier

You just unlocked my deepest memory of me playing this game. I don't know if this is the same one but it's identical from what I remembered. Though I don't remember the chaser was a T-rex but maybe I didn't even knew what a dinosaur was when I played this game (I think this was one of my earliest memories). What I remember is I need to find a portal, but you didn't showed it seems. You only showed the part when you already went through the portal. If I saw that portal from front I can tell if this game is the one I played or not because I remember the portal, but did not remember how it looks.
For the record, I did not scared when I played this game, hence I forgot it almost for the rest of my life and just revived by this video, but it was really different game from the other and I glad I found this video to revisit my earliest memories.

Found this game from my dad's boxes of games and other old computer parts and computers. Honest to God, it's now on my top 10 scariest games as a number 7
This game is probably the inspiration of a game called “shrek’s wonderland”, cause it has the same idea as “monster 3D maze.”
The game: you are stuck in a maze with shrek and have to get away from him and find a portal to get to the next level.
3D Monster Maze was the game named as being used in a Child Abuse case in the UK , the Judge described this game and its use as a disciplinary device to threaten & traumatize under 5's without the need to beat them physically in a now closed down Kindergarten / play group .
It was later used in Scottish prisons as a torture /punishment regime for Prisoners who were held in Solitary confinement , strapped into a chair , soaked in water & electrocuted EVERYTIME they were caught too easily. What came out of those cells later on belies ....

Melty, torn, vague pixel faces really do work better than realistic ones. Stuff like uboa, imscared, gaster and amalgamates are the simple things that stick in your mind forever and ever, even though in theory they shouldn't be that scary.
I'd love to see a slightly upgraded version of this game, with 8 bit graphics, minimal color, and some small animations like turning around.
Of course, no sounds of him coming, just text, but some little sounds on the teleport perhaps

That game terrified me back in 1981. It doesn't need remaking, it was mind-blowing at the time and we can do far better these days - but remember this was over 40 years ago.

I think you should check out Sweet Home for the Famicom/NES. It was a game adaptation of a Japanese Horror Game for the NES, and was the main inspiration for Resident Evil.

This game actually sends chills down my spine. Horror games aren't getting that putting sound in a game doesn't make it scary. Silence is when a horror game is most scariest. The amount of panic you get when the text says "RUN! REX HAS SEEN YOU!" or "REX IS BEHIND YOU!".
