Theres actually some interesting history to this. The russians had a lot of trouble with troop morale, and they found it was cheaper to spend a little extra on better food for their MREs, than to do any of the stuff the US was doing,.
Food will make or break a war effort.

The pate is just a paste of chicken or pork liver and some spices and salt. It's extremely nutritious and perfect for harsh winters as it comes with a ton of energy packed in a small size.
The taste is not amazing, but it's just a bread spread so you won't eat it by itself with a spoon. Also you would mix it with other salty bread spreads like cheese, butter and so on, never with sweet ones like jam or the likes.
Use it at breakfast with hot tea, fresh bred, cheese, butter and a boiled egg.

Great video! Want to chime in with some comments from my personal experience:
The MRE you've tasted seems not the generic, official "Army of Russia" MRE that seems to be the standard now. There are some odd ones in circulation, some for police regiments specifically, some old designs etc., so there is quite a variety. The standard "Army of Russia" one comes in a pretty cardboard box, with a little lamp heater ("kazanok") instead of a water packet. It is actually quite a bib better, with great variety and prettier packaging. If you've liked this one, you would certanly love the one actually served in the army.
The weird "tea-like drink" is indeed a vitamin drink. In the MREs I experienced there is a variety those with different berry flavours, they are awesome. The one you had does not seem to interesting.
The crackers are indeed quite hard, but by design. This is a special kind of cracker ("galet") that is supposed to be hard so as not to break easily when you try to scoop pate out, and not to spoil or break from wear in the field. Your friend is actually right - many Russians do like to dip these in tea - although we do enjoy more regular, softer crackers usually.
By the way, you were lucky: TESS is actually a very good Russian tea, among the better ones! Usually you'd get a different, blander kind.
The candy was actually not cherry - its barberry ("barbaris"): this candy is very popular since the soviet times, you could consider this an exotic experience since I never heard of barberry growing anywhere outside Eastern Europe!
You also gut me so smiling with your boot camp experience - so many good memories as well! Glad you enjoyed our food, cheers! :)

The “Pâté” you were eating from the pull-top can is called “Pashteet” in Russian, and it’s a common ingredient in Russian/Ukrainian/Polish MRE’s, as well as being a very popular midday snack throughout most of Eastern Europe. I’m always reminded of the American Company Hormel and their product “Potted Meat”, although in general, most European varieties of Pashteet are much more flavorful, and there are several different types of Pashteet to choose from!
My Grandma was from Lithuania, so I’m very familiar with Pashteet, and once in a while I order a few cans from online vendors since I don’t live near any cities with a Russian/Eastern European grocery store like we had when I was still in the combat zone of Baltimore City…

That is, if a person was overweight, then he loses weight, and if on the contrary he was thin, he gains weight. The most delicious was in the field trip. 1. Please stabilize and/or buffer the pH inside your bodies mitochondria.
Note: That when hydrogen atoms are clipped off the fatty acid they are waiting for oxygen to be converted to H²O. during that, the pH level is getting more acidic. The biggest problem within your body is, that the enzymes for converting fatty acids into CO² and H²O in the mitochondria are slowing down when your internal environment is getting more acidic. This has been recorded a few decades ago when the research about mitochondrial function started.
A study of a guy from a Skandinavien university is highlighting that detail about taurin and the pH buffering function in the mitochondria.
      2. *There is also a pH buffering agent occurring in you,* outside of the mitochondria, but still inside the cell.....the beta-alanine boosts the intracellular pH buffer carnosine.
      3. In your blood there is bicarbonate that keeps blood slightly in the alkaline range, thereby supplementing the sodium bicarbonate delivers the bicarbonate for that.
So, to be the superman of fat burning during endurance exercising *(which you lack),* it is a good idea to close the chain to keep the mitochondrial fat burning at optimal speed by supplementing sodium bicarbonate + beta-alanine + taurin.

I must be the only person to put on weight in basic. Went from 165 to 180. Then again I felt like basic was a vacation, having grown up on a dairy farm. I was less active in basic than i ever was growing up. In bed at a decent time (about 2-3 hrs earlier than on the farm) and up at about the same time. Three pretty good meals a day, compared to a late breakfast a small or absent lunch ( and not small or absent because of being poor but small or absent because of being busy or too hot to eat) and late dinner/supper. The only part of basic that was even close to as strenuous as living on a dairy farm, was when the unit was being PT'ed as punishment.

The taste usually matters more about what brand you get and the type of pate (what meat they use). There are premium brands like Argeta which I know is available in Serbia, that doesn't just have it's regular tuna, chicken, beef, or pork pates, but offers varieties that include smoked meats, smoked sausage, or prosciutto (пршута/pršuta) ground into the pate, giving an amazing smokey, salty, and peppery flavor.

So if MRE says "expiration date is 2009" the real expiration date is gonna be somewhere around 2014. And only for certain products in package. As canned food can last for decades

I remember him telling me how the kids in Soviet schools would eat steaks, different kinds of link sausages, and all kinds of tasty, delicious meals. He told me that the children were always given the best food, unlike in the US, where only the rich get the best food. I also remember him telling me how they all had free housing and free university. I was living with my parents and had over $40,000 in student loan debt at the time. • @oliviao3686
      @oliviao3686 2 ปีที่แล้ว +66

Absolutely! I spent a year in a US school, now living in Italy. I'm 34, and lived in Russia most of my life. We have the best kindergartens in Russia- the children spend there all day, first thing you come in the morning is breakfast, there also lunch of 2 courses and a dessert, and 2 snack times. But healthy snacks, not like in the West. E.g. for the after-the-nap snack you might get a cottage cheese pie hot tea or a glass of kefir and cookies. The main meals are all hot (cooked in-house usually). The organisation is obliged to count the calories and nutritional value(proteins, fats and carbs), so that the children get all the nutrients they need at that age.
Same with schools. We always had hot meals With hot drinks. Healthy ones, not just French fries or baked potato like in America. For drinks: tea, cocoa, dairy.
We live in an apartment that my parents got for free, all the education is free, including the university, but there the number of free places available is limited, you have to study well and pass the exams well to get a free spot. Childcare leave is 3 years, for 1,5 years you're getting paid a % of your salary for this time+ government help. After that just a small amount, I think.
No later that when the child turns 3 the government must give you a kindergarten, if they don't do that they must give you a monthly allowance for a private kindergarten.
There's a lot more I could tell that's different from Europe to the better...

Because you've got 2 different kind of crackers typically you get the ones that are kind of savory like a regular cracker for the pate and then you got the other ones that are a little sweet for the fruit spread like the Apple butter or apricot jam. One time I had a chance to taste soviet canned beef from military reserves. It was made in early 50s and had expiration date at mid-2010s. It was, hmmm, interesting. First, there was a huge piece of beef, almost no fat or liquid. Second, it was really hard, almost sublimated. Third, it had a bright pink colour, like a sausage. It tasted good but not like any regular beef. There were a lot of it on market those times because expiration date was close and military sold it like American did with spam. It's rare nowadays but I guess another 20 year wouldn't do anything bad with it

My DI actually had a sample C rat when we were in ICT and passed it around for us to take a look or try a taste. I couldn't believe how much better the C rat was. I like the concept of MRE's and have, sadly, only eaten the ones from Russia and the US. The US has a wide range of different types with the possibility of a vegan choice and I get it that they are meant to keep you alive with the required calories etc, but they taste like chemical waste. Some dishes are natural tasting enough to be able to enjoy but otherwise they taste really, really processed, whereas Russian MRE's are divine. A couple of the main dishes taste just like homecooked and are full of natural flavours.
When it comes to speed and efficiency, the US takes the cake easily but whenever it comes to flavour, Russia always wins.

Not saying it's not an effective form of training if that is the case, it's just a different doctrine. Similar to what the US would try to do before Vietnam.

I didn't know that such a heating system was used, probably it was introduced relatively recently, because as I remember, the heating was with dry alcohol, which was ignited by a match that burns in water

Those biscuits / crackers are cool. They soak up fluid like it's nobodies business and turns into a soft mini bread 😂 Then of course you can soak it in the tea to get a "sweet bread" or scoop some sauce out of your hot meal and thin it out with water to make a broth and soak it in there. That bugger turns into one very tasty bread biscuit.
I think in America back in the day a similar product was known as "Hardtack"

Personally I went into Army basic training 6'2" 205lbs and came out 225lbs. I was my own personal fortification, they built me into a concrete wall. 24 years later I'm retired and softening up. But like you I am thankful for every meal God provides for me and my family.
