    When I was a kid in the sixties my Dad was in the military and we were stationed in Europe for a couple of years. A good friend of ours was a German Officer who flew a Fw190 during the war. One day my brother and I were dog-fighting with our model planes. When he saw us he walk up saying "no,no,no" and proceeded for the next 30 minutes to instruct us in the proper way to shoot down another aircraft. I wish he could have seen this restoration flying.

    Its all about the sound!!!! This is what troops on the ground heard in the 1944 when one of these buzzed over. The sound connects you to history!!! Incredible flying, incredible camera work. Thanks, that was a real treat!!!!

    • @InVacuo
      @InVacuo ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well mostly, the engine is actually a Soviet Shvetzov ASh-82 used in various VVS aircraft, not the original BMW 801. So troops would certainly have heard this on the ground but rather when an La-5 or something buzzed over. :)
      To be fair it probably doesn't sound too dissimilar to an original FW-190 and it is a great sound. :)

    • @Strakin
      @Strakin ปีที่แล้ว

      This engine is related to the BMW, has the same roots@@InVacuo

    • @InVacuo
      @InVacuo ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Strakin I'm not finding any evidence of that, the 801 is an evolution the BMW 132 (an improved version of a Pratt & Whitney Hornet and only a single row radial which BMW then used to design the two-row 139) and culmination of the 139 and the two-row Bramo 329.
      The Shvetsov ASh-82/M-82 is a development of the M-62, a licensed version of the Wright Cyclone.
      The only roots I see are that they are both radials.

    • @Strakin
      @Strakin ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you are right. I had wrong informations, i once read an article about the flugwerk fw190 where it was stated that the Shvetsov was based on the BMW. This was not right. @@InVacuo

    When the FW 190 first made it's appearance a new poster was produced by the British War Ministry. It featured an FW 190 with the caption, " Who's afraid of the big bad Wulf ? " At one Bomber Command station, a wag added " Sign here " on the poster. The whole bomber squadron signed it. 'Nuff said. Flugwerk did an amazing job on this build !

      @@MrRugbylane I think that it is because of armoring. The plane was also designed for ground attack (a fighter-bomber). Wing loading is much higher on the Fw than on the spitfire, so it was less maneuverable. The Angle of attack (basically how much you can deviate your nose from your flight path) was much higher on the Spitfire. However the Fw was very fast in a dive, hence the boom and zoom tactics of the Luftwaffe, if caught in a turn fight with a spitfire, the plane would loose. It is interesting the design choices, that went into each plane. British seemed to make their own version of a fighter bomber with the Tempest, which also is a pretty cool plane.

    One of the things that made WWii such an amazing topic of study was the cutting edge ahead of it's time technology were the incredible flying machines flown by both the Germans and Allies. Each side competing for that little edge to gain advantage and then the Germans finally introduced the ME-262 right near the end of the war. Incredible to see them all here on display and still flying still amazes when you think this was 80 + years ago when these planes were put into battle over the skies in Europe.
