- After many of our viewers said the SOG systems were well worth having I decided to see how easy it is to upgrade our loo to have one. It turns out Thetford have made it pretty easy and even have an all-in-one upgrade kit.
Whilst my installation isn't the most comprehensive, confined space, wind and obstacles all got in the way of me recording every moment, the video does show the install and also how it works and our review after almost 2 months of having it installed.

Thanks for that. My Hymercar was pre-fitted with this, so now I know what I have got! As far as I am concerned the white "fan light" is actually good enough to be a bathroom "night light". Once you have activated it (before you start operations), there is sufficient light, at night (my control panel is mounted vertically, so perhaps the light spread is better). It is also good that the second press stops the fan & noise, at night. The 3 min timer on the light is to get back to bed. The fan is very effective, you can certainly "feel" it working too (if the flap is open).

Thanks for the review of that, it’s convinced me that a SOG system is the way to go. It’s quieter than the Thetford system and comes on and goes off when you open the flap, and would be quicker and easier to fit. I think it’s about £50 more. Only thing is, you know my skill level 😂 back home for Christmas if you fancy fitting it for me 🤪 enjoy Scotland 🏴 Jon and Jayne.
The sog system works off the cassette trap, it also has a tube to the cassette too, it seemed more complicated to me 🤷🏼♂️

I just purchased a Hymer and wondered why the Thetford toilet had this fan going as it was not in the 2 caravans we owned that had Thetford toilets.
What a good idea John. Though I don't think I'll go down the sog route, seeing how it works and you're clear description of the process would help many people to decide if they would like to have a go themselves and save a few bob, or pay someone else to do it for them. Nice one.👍

We have had a SOG for over 3 years. Apart from swapping the charcoal filter it’s been trouble free.

Hello, I have purchased a new vehicle which the dealer has revamped before selling.
They have installed a new thetford cassette (exact same as yours) which also seem to have the fan kit.
Only think is that the fan is not connected to the control panel (same panel as yours).
The 2 red-black cables are just dangling there with no connector.
Any chance you know which connector I can buy to plug it in the panel?

Interesting, never heard of them, but sounds like a good investment. That second green light would be better if it was amber - like on the old fixed seat cassette toilets that had the 3 colour rotating indicator that went Green-amber-red.

My new van is a fiat ducato 'maxi' and I think I've read somewhere that the gross weight allows for 3650kg ,do I need to change to a C1 license 🤔 thanks.
You’d only need a c1 of the weight plate is over 3.5t
Hi John as you had the wooden batterns beneath the cassette base did you manage to drill the 85mm hole through the van floor as per the instruction or did you vent it out somewhere else? Thanks
I actually cheated as the batten was so well fixed down I could get the access needed for the funnel to be installed, so I used an existing hole in the floor just a few cm away which a a drop vent cover in place, so I used some flexi heating hose to get the fan air to the floor hole. 👍🏻
John, how come you had no problems fixing up and wiring that bit of, but get when it comes to grilling piglets (crumpets), you were panicking like you were diffusing an unexploded WW2 bomb?

Hi John, I bought and managed to install one three days ago. Your video was really helpful. Thanks a million. But since then, the "cassette missing" light is blinking all the time, even when I put the cassette back in. More worryingly, I am testing it flushing water into the cassette, and I am afraid that it is spilling around. When I remove it, there is quite a lot of water in the cassette's board. Any ideas why this might be happening? Thanks
I’ve just fitted one also and I’m having the same issue with the cassette missing light, also the fan will not work..🤷🏻
@@nightjar9021 someone else here on TH-cam had a problem with the fan an received a replacement… this part is not very reliable

There should be a sticker on the base of your toilet where you insert the cassette.

John you are supposed to change the filter every 4 weeks. I bought a box of charcoal from eBay and just change the charcoal every 4 weeks far more cost effective.
It says it’ll do a season, thetford says that I should get a year out of it full time.
Wrong, it actually says change after 4 weeks of constant use which they equate to changing it once a Year.
I thought you were a “blade closed” family? In which case I don’t see the point in a sog or thetford equivalent? As the blade is open for a matter of seconds.
Closed was for keeping the smells down, so now we don’t need to do that.
