    Maggie, thank you so much for the information on sepsis. I’ve been dealing with kidney stones this year. Never had them before, but I’ve had 2 episodes this year. Ct scan shows that I might have 1 more. My urologist has me on calcium citrate and now I’m also on potassium citrate. This usually goes along with a uti. I’m doing better right now though. You are such an inspiration to me. Keep up the good work that you do and take care of yourself too!! You are such a beautiful person!💕💕

    In 2017, my colon ruptured from undiagnosed diverticulitis with perforations. I went into sepsis. I remember smelling and tasting fecal matter in my mouth. It was very strong. I was in the hospital at the time, and my pain was controlled. I ended up having emergency surgery, awoke with a colostomy bag on my abdomen. Six months later I had a successful colostomy reversal surgery! I was in the hospital nearly a whole month, and continued on IV antibiotics for a week after I got home. Very scary time. Glad you are on the mend.

      @@firesoftheasylum7890 I’m doing fine now, thank you! It will be 3 years on March 2nd, 2021 since my reversal surgery. I’m just happy the colonoscopy I had before surgery showed the Surgeon it was all healed. I was so scared I would have to have that colostomy bag longer than the six months I did. When I had my surgery for my colon rupturing, my Nurse told me I was very blessed to be alive. 🥰

    Hi! I'm a nursing student in Sweden, we use a standardized scale to early be able to notice sepsis. We check pulse, blood pressure, saturation, if any oxygen is used, temperature, and how fast they breath. If any of the numbers are off what is normal we give them a point. 0-3. 0 being it's normal, 1 slightly off, 2 a bit off, 3 way off. If you get 7 points or more we almost always treat it as septic shock, some score 7p normally but then they're already sick but not necessarily septic, those who the symptoms are newly catched we usually give the patient oxygen if running low in saturation, fluids and something for the fever and taking blood cultures, and a doctor is called up immediately. So we use that chart to notice sepsis early, we call that chart NEWS which we take 1-10 times a 24h on the patient depending on how well they're doing. Do you have a similar system that you are able to go after?

    • @LetsTalkIBD
      @LetsTalkIBD  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think it is more hospital-based than a national scale for us! I know the last hospital I worked in had policies on what to look for and when to start medications for it. I really like that scale though - maybe the US should implement something like this!

    In 2015 I ended up in critical condition with sepsis and in septic shock, in fact I wasn't expected to survive it was so severe. It turned out that I had a bowel obstruction, bowel abscess that had perforated. I was rushed by orange ambulance to a city hospital and had to undergo emergency surgery. I was in ICU for over a week and woke up to a colostomy. I was in hospital for 5 weeks and then in rehabilitation for another 4 months. I have suffered from severe IBS since I was a teenager. I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia in 2000. In 2017 I ended up septic again with pneumococcal pneumonia and found myself in ICU once again. Just this March 2019 I suffered from 3 mini strokes and was close to death: it was discovered at this time after many tests that I have a rare autoimmune disease / disorder of the blood, TTP. I spent 7 days in ICU and another 4 on the floor. I thought that I just had the flew, it just sneaks up on you.

    April 2019 I woke up with a 104.9 fever, chills. I waited at home for 4 hours to try to break my fever. I ended up going to 105, confused, vomiting. rushed to the ER, BP was 56/30. full sepsis. spent 8 days in the ICU. Apprently it was E-coli from my leaky gut (Crohns Disease 32 years). I was in pretty bad shape. I recovered but it was pretty close!

    Thank you for this. Honestly, I think this video should be a requirement for all ER staff in rural hospitals. My primary care provider told me to head to my local urgent care clinic as I've had kidney pain and dehydration issues. My recent labs indicate low kidney, liver, and pancreas function. The urgent care dr referred me to the ER. I'm reluctant to go as, being chronically ill, one doesn't get treated as well.

Avoided an ostomy for now but spent 52 days in the hospital and Rehab with complications as well as sepsis... I am on Remicade and daily oral medications.... Next infusion is 12/11... I am stable right now and seeing my GI who I adore and she is the BEST on 12/3... My surgeon is the best too but unfortunately he went to another hospital about two months ago and I was so upset when I found out the news, but my GI is always on TOP of everything so we will find a new surgeon through the hospital if need be!!! This old video was in my recommended videos but it caught my eye. I'm widowed and in widow groups, I have been shocked how many became widowed due to sepsis. I never really understood what it was (reason I clicked video). I always thought it was just a severe type of blood infection, but it is different than what I mistakingly thought. It is frightening how common this seems to be and how many times I've heard it as cause of spousal death the past few years.

    Sepsis is very sneaky. This is important information. My Dad died in 2017 due to complications of sepsis (for the second time, he made a remarkable recover the time before, or so we thought) He already had Heart Failure, COPD and Kidney failure So of course an attack on his system like that just made it all worse and that much harder to fight off.

    My husband died, because the stupid ER doctor kept sending him home, on the 4th visit on the 2nd day, they finally take it seriously and it was too late. I even refused in the 3nd time to take him home, and the said " mame we already checked him out" this was after taking his Bone marrow. I have crohn's disease and have for 16 years now, I have not had any surgeries yet because I am stubborn but I know it's only a matter of time before I will need surgeries and all that. I have gotten sepsis 2 times now in the past 6 years.
    The first time I had sepsis was 7 years ago I was 30 years old and had just started recovering from a horrible flare up and a week of prednisone and I was in a lot of pain I couldn't walk my husband finally didn't give me a choice but to go to the ER at this point and when I got to the hospital they took some blood work and came back and said they were admitting me for sepsis and it turned out that the prednisone thinned the lining of my stomach let 5 different bacteria in my blood and they gave me a 15% chance of survival but after 2 weeks in the ICU I survived. The second time I got sepsis was just 8 months ago I very suddenly got very weak and had trouble breathing and I was confused and out of it and just felt awful I went to the ER and they said I had sepsis from double phenomena and acute kidney failure and my oxygen level got to the point where they wanted to incubate me but I refused (I dont really remember refusing I was out of it) and I spent another few weeks in the ICU again but I survived again with no permanent damage to my kidneys. I was very lucky both times and both times were very scary for me I developed what the doctors call PTSD from having sepsis and being in the hospital and I still have lasting issues because of it so it's very important that people pay attention as much as possible and just dont doubt yourself and go to the ER because the worst thing that can happen is they tell you your okay and send you home but if you do have sepsis and dont go to the hospital the worst thing that can happen is you die so thank you for putting up this video and bringing awareness to the situation because there is just not enough information being passed onto people about this topic.

    This is interesting. I have a double ostomy and have been dealing with bouts of sepsis. I've had it 3 times now to the point where I thought I could see the signs coming and we always thought it was coming from a UTI but this last time it just hit me and starting shivering. I knew what was happening and went to ER right away but docs are still confused as to why I'm getting these bouts of sepsis. Now I'm thinking we may have to take a closer look at the colostomy side rather than concentrating on the ileostomy side.

    I ended up septic back in June after knee surgery because of cellulitis we didn't notice. Had a WBC of about 25000 and a high lactic acid level, plus tachycardia, fever, nausea, headache, fainting, sweating, all that fun stuff. Thankfully I got treated quickly and only had to spend a couple days in the hospital on 3 IV antibiotics and it didn't end up in my knee. It was really scary though, especially for my family and fiancé!

    I worry about sepsis, because I have a fistula, that the surgeon told me he decided it was best to do nothing, due to all the scar tissue, adhesion from full ileostomy..... first in 82 for J-pouch, then in 2013 for revision to full ileostomy. My problem was not Crohns, but Ulcerative Colitis. I am just worried that leaving the fistula will lead to sepsis. The occasional antibiotics do not seem to affect any possible infection.

The medicine is now delivered in these plastic ball things and they teach you how to hook your own self up....so much better than my poor nurse having to come at 6am and 6pm every single day for 2 weeks!! Just look out for feeling REALLY crappy. My one asymptomatic sepsis, when I woke up, I was SO SICK. My joints actually crackled with every movement. It was so strange. I did not get a fever until I had been in the ER for a couple hours. I just thought my baby and I had the flu bad. If it weren't for my baby, I don't know when I would have gone.
