I miss filthy Frank, it’s funny at the start of 2017 Joji said that it would be the filthiest year yet and then he just fucking stops Filthy Frank all together
Opinion: Joji is always so depressed and moody because he incorporates into his music the fact he knows his past as Filthy Frank pretty much defines his success and he will never be able to escape it. He is forever tied to that association and people will have a hard time respecting his music career on it's own merits. To be fair I think if Joji had ended his career as Filthy Frank a bit more gracefully and less as a bait and switch to his fandom, people would respect his music career a lot more. You can't make a video making fun of fake internet rappers, then become one.
This is a good comment. And I agree with the whole "end it gracefully" thing. His fanbase was (still is?) growing fast. There could he people who binge all of his stuff. And what do you think their reaction will be when the last video he has posted is just one last attempt to cash in on them? Like seriously. Towards the end I felt more used than anything else. It's because everyone bought Pink Season that he got where he was, and he thanks us by just trying to get more of our money before he jumps ship.
I was newish to the Frank fun right before he dipped. (I did know about Harlem Shake and a few random things before). When he said he was gonna do more but deleted some videos, didn't release some and then said thanks all, I'm done... that gets some people being like ".....where's my Frank stuff?" I'm happy he gets do what he wants, but still, could have been alot more graceful in the departure.
I feel like I've said this before, but I love how you start your videos with the topic in the title. It doesn't beat around the bush or force viewers to stick around and I respect it wholeheartedly.
Cill Wrelia I mean if you look at my comment I was definitely responding to the idea that she wrote the song about Mac dying in a dismissive way but okay bud, enjoy your day
@@bwn2k532 yeah, that's melon's opinion. But I think he had a couple of actually good tracks, as well as the peep guy. At the same time I can't name a single joji's above average track even though I heard them all. Even some pink guy's tracks are better than joji in general.
I'd appreciate it if Joji kinda blended the comedic hip hop elements of his FF releases and the ultra moody and sad music he's doing now. My fav example would be "Fried Noodles", "Rice Balls", "Weird McDonalds Rap" (Tribute to Ronald), and more recently "No Fun". I think then George would stand out so much more and have more credibility imo. EDIT: I want him to RAP verses and sing choruses, he can say so much more and songs will have so much more dynamic.
I completely agree, the Fried Noodles chorus hits differently after the crass (in a good way) rap lines. Though I fear he doesn't mix the two styles now in order to distinguish himself from his Filthy Frank persona.
@@AbsurdistLemon idgi tho he could just merely incorporate elements of his Pink Guy albums to his current generic RnB tone. That wouldnt hospitalize him.
It´s true that Joji probably wouldn´t be nearly as big without his prior internet fame. However I think it´s important to note that there is absolutely nothing negative about this. Think of it sort of like a business man who sells his shares in one company to start up another. The only difference being that instead of it being a financial capital it is a cultural one.
unfortunately i do have to admit Joji would probably not suceed without FF, not because he's not talented but because even talented people have incredible trouble getting traction
peterpansie5 you can say is not your type of music which is an okay opinion, but you can’t call him a bad artist. People forget he’s not trying to be Beyoncé, Chris brown or Miguel. His music is basically surrounded by depression and sex 😂 and his music sound depressing. Therefore he’s actually doing what he’s supposed to be doing which makes him a good artist. If you don’t match the Style the going for then your not a good artist, but he is
I hate to be so hard but Joji really is boring to me, he sound like many other artists that do this kinda sadboy rnb music nowadays, if it wasn't for Filthy Frank I would have just ignored him as another kid with a laptop and I wouldn't even listen to it since much of that genre is so full of crap nowadays. If he just came out in the scene today with no prior fame he wouldn't have made it as far as he did, that's for sure. Fantano wouldn't even be here talking about it if he wasn't friends with the guy prior, for how much he tries to sound detached and critical I'm sorry to say that when it come to joji he really tries to go nice on him, he says all this stuff about his music but when I listen to it it sounds bland and already-heard elsewhere.
Regi wether he's boring or not, it doesn't really matter. Just let him do whatever he want. Doing a filthy Frank video literally put him in the hospital. Not just that, the hardwork that put him to make filthy Frank video doesn't profit him anyway. Of course he gain popularity and fame but because of the TH-cam algorithm, it's completely fucked him over.
Asmaul Husna yes it does matter, if Anthony didn’t know him personally before do you think he’d do a review of anythin he puts out since it sounds like any one who makes this sadboy r&b formulaic songs? No he wouldn’t. Plus I don’t care that his FF vids put him in the hospital, his music isn’t anything special and just doesn’t have the need to becreviewed by anthony, he probablyvwould have skipped all of it if it wasn’t for his previous presence on the internet. The problem is not about what he does or what he can do, he can do anything he wants, that’s not the problem, the problem is that if it was by hos music’s merits he wouldn’t be where he is now.
It's just cuz hip hop is the most popular and significant genre. In an alternate universe where polka music reigns, polka would pull in all his viewers.
Isnt it kind of obvious that fame carries over? I don’t think thats a hot take at all. No one can say how big or small joji would be without previous TH-cam succes
It's also not exactly unfair that those who were interested in what you created in the past may still be interested in what you create in the future, even if you take it in a completely different direction. That filthy frank fanbase wasn't built in a day.
I agree, I don't think a large number of Joji's fans would spend their time trying to analyze his songs if he wasn't famous before; and they just listen and take the time to listen to his moaning lyrics because he used to be Filthy Frank.
Bruh I'm high as fuck. I took your comment to mean that Joji is a manifestation of chaos and sadness, and as such, Filthy Frank is birthed from that very well of mental anguish and instability. Hence without the Joji character, Filthy Frank would be but a shallow imitation of his shitposting self. But now I see you were doing a joke thing that flew over my head. ....I need to stop smoking weed so early in the morning.
If Joji is only famous because of Filthy Frank then Childish Gambino is only famous because of Community. Even if it's true for both of them it doesn't take away the raw talent they each possess.
This made me extremely happy to know there’s people like you out there. I make music, and my biggest fear is releasing something that’s “just a club banger” after watching this I wanted to go straight to the studio, but I’m on a business trip so I’m sad haha. I liked the vid Very insightful, especially the section.80 part, I loved that album but it definitely doesn’t tell as good a story as the latter two. Cheers
Wait wtf? Look at derrick comedy vids. Look at community. He was a great, semi-known actor before he started rapping and before he became big as childish gambino. Bruh why people act like he ain't done nothin with his life til he started rapping
@@TheKozzee That why I said "maybe". Childish Gambino fully cemented his reputation as a multi-talent, but that wasn't the one that made him fully famous. He was already (kind of) well-established because of his time in Community.
Let me get this straight > art criticism is art > anthony makes album reviews > Anthony is making art (?) > I criticize his reviews in the comments, making me an art critic (??) > I'm an artist (???) > If anyone reading this agrees with me or calls me dumb, they are criticizing my art, and are therefore artists as well (?!?!)
He mentioned effort being a part of it. Merely doing it effortlessly like this isn't much. If this is art this is merely a single dot on the back of a bathroom door.

most people here arguing that FF is the reason for Joji's fame are completely sleeping on 88rising's involvement. he seamlessly went from Frank to Joji in the public eye thanks to 88r's management only, without them he'd be still releasing soundcloud songs and FF merch.
GKMC is his masterpiece and I don't know if he'll ever top it, but after that, I'd rather listen to S.80 over anything else. It was my introduction to Kendrick and I can't deny that has something to do with my love for it, but every time I hear that crackling fire I'm just IN, you know?
0:45 I'm not sure about this, but Joji didn't tell too much about his 'Joji' project, people just randomly found the soundcloud and listened to it over and over again. Then he realised it was the smartest choice for him to go.
@@allisonfazekas4 I agree but apparently you like death grips, the nerve to insult another artist when you like generic boring hipster noise trash is kind of jarring. 🤮
I doubt he'd have been recognised as an artist on soundcloud w/o his internet persona cause there's sooo many people out there trying to get heard. However, he is turning out to be quite successful as himself which I can't really grant to the FF franchise cause the jump from youtube to music is drastic and most people fail. I don't think the people who caused him to go #1 on hip hop billboard are the same people who watched his yt vids. so basically i think he needed it to become known in the first place but now he's made a name for himself unrelated to frank
I understand not liking daughters new album entirely. But the hatred I’ve seen towards it is weird to me. Maybe it’s because I generally don’t hate any music quite in that way, like aggressive hatred. I just have a hard time respecting criticism when it’s so aggressive but with no appreciation for what the artist may have been trying to do or for what it genuinely does well in their eyes. Criticism as shallow as “it sucks and I hate it” and nothing more is valid, sure, but it’s also lazy and feels extremely vapid to me. The whole “I cOuLd Do tHaT” argument for avant-garde/experimental art is bogus too. If you can do it, do it. And just because you can do it doesn’t invalidate somebody else doing it. Let’s say you can draw very well, but are you going to go up to a drawing in a museum and honestly be like “I could do that”? Like context, intent, and artistic vision is important and thinking all that matters in art is the physical ability to do it is fucking shallow and pretty stupid.
What I find funny (as someone who loves the album) is how polarizing it is. You either love it or you hate it. Noise Rock, and the album in particular is really harsh. Harsh music isn't exactly mainstream or casually listenable. Also, anyone who says they can replicate the musicianship of Daughters is downright naive as fuck. They can say it's random notes if they want, but anyone with ears would know that's false.
@@joshyjoshyjosh a band with guitars that sound like a horror circus is a diamond in this rhinestone wave of rock. Nothing like it will exist for a loooong time before people begin picking up on it. That's why no one can casually claim " i CaN dO tHaT"
The new Daughters album is totally fine for casual listening. I folded laundry to that album today, I cooked, I did dishes; maybe I am confusing what the person means by "Casual listening".
All of my friends from middle school who used to watch Filthy Frank still will discuss singles that he put out and stuff and I feel like a lot of other big Frank fans still do too. We still tune in because joji was a huge part of our adolescence and made a great influence on our own humor
Came for the title and staying for the content Im in love with this side of TH-cam that’s calmer and much more reasonable with your thoughts TH-cam suggested you because 3 Left Arrows viewers watch you. Usually the suggestions suck but this time the overlap isn’t bad
If Art Criticism is an art, Then one could criticise Art Criticism, Creating Art Criticism Criticism, Which would in itself be an art, And thus could be criticised, And the cycle repeats itself.
I gotta say I actually like the Chloe Burbank experiment Joji/FF did, genuinely I liked those songs and listen to them still. But this new stuff, yeeesh, not my style tbh. Anyway me like joji I want him to be happy. Peas
12:23 Very well said. If you're ultimately consuming music for the purpose of playing it in the background and not thinking about the work put into it, the themes, tones and lyrics, you're speaking volumes about your lack of self-awareness, curiosity and critical thinking skills.
8:19 absolutely agreed. My favorite Metallica is ReLoad and my favorite Aerosmith album is Get Your Wings. I don’t blame people who won’t agree with me, I have a personal connection to love these albums the most and I completely understand that. Same for countless other bands where I prefer a subpar album over the most commonly accepted “best”.
Criticism will always be beneath art. While it does take some skill to be an effective and FAIR critic, it will never hold a candle to what goes into making art. To be a critic all you need these days is an opinion and the ability to write at a 6th grade level. Damn near everyone is closer to that than being an artist. Criticism is important, but is never more important than the actual art. A lot of these critics just like to puff themselves up and act like they essential.
Actually, it's a lot deeper than that. Nerd culture and internet culture in general has just shaped the critic into somebody with an opinion, not somebody who is able to dissect and analyze a piece of work.

But he was making sad moody music way before he stopped the filthy frank thing
he released songs from chloe burbank like a year and a half before he stopped making filthy frank videos
But he isn't rapping...
I feel like I've said this before, but I love how you start your videos with the topic in the title. It doesn't beat around the bush or force viewers to stick around and I respect it wholeheartedly.

EDIT:
I want him to RAP verses and sing choruses, he can say so much more and songs will have so much more dynamic.

I completely agree, the Fried Noodles chorus hits differently after the crass (in a good way) rap lines.
Though I fear he doesn't mix the two styles now in order to distinguish himself from his Filthy Frank persona.

Max this and also he’s not talented and makes bad music
peterpansie5 he doesn’t really make bad music, it’s just unbelievably basic shit that sounds like a Xanax overdose
Cill Wrelia depends on your definition of bad music I guess
peterpansie5 you can say is not your type of music which is an okay opinion, but you can’t call him a bad artist.
People forget he’s not trying to be Beyoncé, Chris brown or Miguel. His music is basically surrounded by depression and sex 😂 and his music sound depressing. Therefore he’s actually doing what he’s supposed to be doing which makes him a good artist.
If you don’t match the Style the going for then your not a good artist, but he is
Emani lee or you a good artist if you make good music and he doesn’t
I don't know what your talking about with him going nice. Everytime he has reviewed any project of his he has been giving it kind of bad scores.

It's actually because /mu/ is so tired of that album that it just making them puke to talk about it again and again

Fantono should make a podcast. Maybe it’s just me but I listen to these more than I watch the vids
Interestingly enough, I think maybe this comment is sort of a criticism, as well. Does that make this comment an art? Yeah, I doubt it also.
Actually, it's a lot deeper than that. Nerd culture and internet culture in general has just shaped the critic into somebody with an opinion, not somebody who is able to dissect and analyze a piece of work.
This is true so long as you hold that art is objective.
