Could you imagine if the Zulu had some how discovered titanium and made their shields more then strong enough to last under British fire? Of corse cannons and morter shells would have done the job fine, but their would be a lot more close quarters fight.
1. titanium was hard to find in that era and a titanium or Steel shield in the style the zulu used strong enough to take multiple bullet impacts would be useless due to the weight. 2. That would require the zulu to be an actual industrialised civilisation with metalurgy methods way ahead of their time. 3. A bullet prove shield would not lead to more melee combat. As you might know a bullet transfers kinetic energy the impact of the bullet would give the wielder of the shield some serious bruises and under continued fire of the british lines would even lead to the shieldbeares bones cracking and therefore require him to discard the shild.

I must apologies, I thought using the word "somehow" would be a good enough clue that my comment conflicts with reality quite on purpose. In fact in its own special concealed way, it isn't even on topic with this video. Then you went and mentioned steel. Sorry if this seems a bit out of the blue but steel, or any metal involving iron in the recipe, is trash. I know you may be confused as to why, but I have watched in horror as 500 solders where killed with magnetic weapons. Although it could still be practical in a era that didn't have them such as this one. But please don't mention steel again. It brings back memories that haunt me, ok? Now, the reason I picked titanium is because of its properties. The strength of metal is measured in how strong it is per pound, pounds being how compact (tempered below the point of becoming brittle makes it heavier) compared to this feature in other metals. Titanium was my choice because titanium at 3 pounds is equal to 12 pound steel. Thus a shield in the stile the Zulu prefer would only have to weigh 15 pounds if they want to hold out againced gunfire for a while, or 25 pounds if they want to last. That's really not so hard. (At least I don't think it is. Could be wrong, my knowledge of human strength is very small.) Yes, they would have to have a at least Viking level knowledge in blacksmithing, but again I used the word "somehow" to reference the comment had nothing to do with reality. As for shock, I'm not sure you realize, but the item I am referring to is a shield. With shields, shock is literally your first enemy you have to deal with. And if reality is changed to having Zulu with the technology to make something that strong, can we not have them realize the vanity of their shield's potential if it isn't even going to allow them to take a full hit of what is calculated? I mean if we are being real hear why would they make metal shields in the first place? Without Europeans a Zulu solder only faces weapons of wood and iron, againced which a shield made of leather makes them invincible. Am I not allowed to give my purposefully exaggerated forces something to cushion the shock such as perhaps, putting the metal plate over their already leather? No? Not allowed to find at least some method of countering shock? Or would that even matter? Shock would still be present would it not? If we could fend it off enough that 1 hit from a bullet amounts to that of a finger flick under intense fire it will still eventually add up until it can reach the bone snapping point would it not? Ok then, fine, lets try this a different way. We will have 3 units charge. The front ones will advance a few yards, each hit their shields take will hurt a little bit at a time, then when they get tired unit 2 takes front and they have their turn at it, then finally unit 3 has their turn. Even if they still have to discard their shields they have gotten closer. Being closer their is a higher chance that some will still make it to melee distance by increased chance. And, even if it results in a few broken left arms, you only need the arm your weapon is in to finish the job. Now, to enthuses the real point in my comment its not so much about weather they are reality abiding Zulus, or if the technology of the 18 hundreds would allow for such a thing, or even weather or not humans aren't to weak and pathetic to even use my idea as described, what it is actually about is "Hey, what if their shields actually did something againced bullets and the battle became bullet resistance VS fire power?"
Mean while for the British in that situation I would suggest the lines aim for 1 at a time. No armor in the world can save a man from that. But it still decreases the effectiveness of fire power per volley, allowing more chance of close quarters fighting.
