- With less than a week until the AFL kicks off, and somehow even more time until Round 1, it's time for me to dust off my crystal ball, throw it in the bin, and wildly predict what's going to happen via a series of uninformed guesses.

I am a little less optimistic when it comes to my team, the Geelong Cats.
Last year exposed loads of weaknesses of their longevity of being in the finals for so long since 2004 and their Premireship years seem to be long behind them now after the retirees of the past year.
I think the Cats can get up to 10 wins for the year and a first full crowd at Kardinia Park since 2019 will help with that.
Whether or not they make finals, what a run its been for the Cats. I think they've genuinely only had two bad years the entire time I've been alive

Honestly I didn't know where to put them. Agree with you in that they could challenge for top 8, they just need to close out those tight games. Would love to see the Sainters go well!

Nice! Comes really close to having both Adelaide teams host both Syd teams in week 1 of the finals - wonder how the schedule would be affected?
As a Collingwood fan, I don't quite see us going back to back but would be happy with finals. Again the lack of quality talls is a concern (even if McStay does a Krakouer/Goldsack and heals quick enough to make an 11th hour cameo, he's likely not going to be at his best), but I have had doubts before (especially last years granny) and been proven wrong, so who knows?
I see Brisbane getting revenge for the premiership, but a few other teams (Carlton, Sydney, Melbourne) look likely too.
I don't see that Pies group resting on their laurels - they performed almost exactly to where their Pythagorean expected wins placed them, so there's little chance of a significant drop off.
Should be another good year for the Pies.
3/4 of the way through the home and away season and WOW your prediction on Essendon very much didn't land lmao, I don't like the Dons that much but they've had a decent season to be at 4th so far... although they could be knocked out of the 8 very soon, but I don't see it. Also pretty cool to see Freo actually surprise you, I'm feeling Flagmantle for once! (they'll still find a way to trip and fall regardless).
It's amazing that my Dons prediction probably won't even be the worst one!! Glad to see Freo challenge me, I still cannot pick that side. There's definitely a few sides I didn't see becoming elite, most of this top 4 has surprised me!

The thing I'm loving about this year's ladder predictions is that there's a lot of difference compared to last year, and yet most of them (including yours) feel like they can genuinely happen.

I don't see how you can see the Giants falling because their best player has entered his 30s when Taylor Walker is nearly 34 and kicked proportionally more goals for the Crows than Greene did for the Giants. It's more likely that Walker will drop off and that'll put more pressure on the other forwards leading to a decrease in the Crows scoring.
It's a good point you make - my logic is that a 66 goal season from an older small forward is harder to replicate than the same for an older tall forward.
Plus, I'm really relying on Fogarty and Rankine picking up the slack. If they don't, the Crom are in trouble
I'm a hawks fan and not that optimistic.. bottom 4 for us, I'd swap us an essendon. Essendon is harshly rated here imo. Dogs too. Yes the dogs are horrible at getting this shit together... but still... talent wise a top 8 side.
Port will make the 8 easy. They have enough talent. But harsh to say Gerogiades has "been missing" dude was out all year with his knee.
It's a really weird ladder. I'd like to know how you come up with it tbh. Could be better, but could be worse.

@@thegaz-man I hadn’t thought through the finals yet, but surely whoever wins Adelaide-St Kilda gets the Gaz-Man cup, if it’s a draw, GWS win the cup. I have done one ladder predictor where I managed the qualifying finals to be GWS-Sydney and Carlton-Collingwood, which the more I think about, the more I want.
Adelaide and Stk are going to hurt you here but looking over these predictions, I think yours is shaping up best. Nailed Syd and Bris which were hard gets.
@@callanbrown8571 Definitely agree that Adelaide and Stk are the ones hurting me. I thought Sydney's trade period was similar to Richmond 2016, filled holes in their team with underperforming players at other teams and I think it's paying off. Honestly thought Brisbane would have done better but they were the most likely team to drop out of the prelim finalists for me.

Not bad, would swap Carl and Adelaide and GWS and Geelong.
I feel like I've been harsh to the Giants but having seen their poorer 2023 performances in person, I'm not convinced they can beat top teams on anything other than their very best days

Not sure how you saw Adelaide and hawthorns list and thought they were gonna be good, also Fremantle were the second youngest team in the comp last year 😂
I assumed that Adelaide would continue their scoring form, which clearly hasn't happened but I feel like that was based on pretty bulletproof evidence. Just a shame the midfield's gone underground for no apparent reason.
Hawks I just completely misjudged it seems, thought their youngsters were ready to take it to the next level.
Freo, they've taken a lot of people by surprise. I don't think they'll jeep this form up but they're looking like a top 8 contender. Absolutely misread them, too.
West Coast are honestly overhated, in terms of culture I feel like we're better than North tbh
If your only systemic issue is injury management, it's far from the worst 'culture issue' of the last few years (as an Adelaide fan I know a thing or two about that 😅)
My advice based on that experience - this is likely the worst your team will be in your lifetime. It only goes up from here.

Dogs looked great in that game, true. Watching Geel v Hawks now and boy, the Hawks can turn it on when they want to.
I think the Hawks will last the season out better, personally.

Haha yeah, Harley Reid has left me with egg on my face already. Thought the rebuild would take another year for its results to start kicking in but it seems the Eagles are climbing already.
