The Distagon 35/1.4 ZM is since 2006 is the best, more microcontrast, no onion rings like the FLE 'lux, no Leica glow. I could use hopefully the G Planar 35/2 soon... which suits my needs.Yes, i case you noticed - Zeiss Fan since 89 here...and Zeiss was often better then it's Leica counterparts, starting right with the Contax I into 1932...often sharper, faster & better, also cheaper. Love that "Zeissiness" look, it's 3D Pop, microcontrast & rendition, tonality typical for Zeiss lenses.🙂
Thank you so much for doing a review on this. I've been watching the development with interest closely. I am very much looking forward to your 28 mm review. Ultra fast wides are such a rarity.
Patiently awaiting the 28mm version! Loooove the design decision for DoF indication. I’d probably wear out the lubrication just clicking back and forth to watch it go, haha.
Thanks for this overview. Finally a Chinese manufacturer who gets branding right!! They put in the effort to build a brand name that works internationally across languages and cultures. I will be pre-ordering their 28mm, if it's anything like you describe the 35mm, it's going to be a very good value proposition at that price point.
@@mpw621 I own the 40 1.4 MC which is optically similar. Love it for the classic rendering, though the focus shift and colors are not as good on digital, I mostly use it on film.
Thank you for another great, informative review. How do you think the thypoch compares to the voigtlander noct 35mm f1.5 with regards to 3d pop and microcontrast.
Great review! It just looks a little too big for my tastes, but the Zeiss Distagon is as well for me. My 35mm Summicron seems to do all I need, and is so small.
Interesting. I like to see new manufacturers approaching rangefinder lens design with intention. If I'm honest, I feel a little like I'm watching an infomercial? But I support you working with Leica-minded manufacturers!
I kind of understand the depth of field scale but, I don’t why all the dots are not spread out symmetrically. Why do the dots on the right go higher than those on the left, for example?
Thanks for bringing awareness to this brand. I had never heard of them. That depth of field indicator mechanism is awesome. The design reminds me of my Voigtlander 50mm 1.5 in chrome.
Quite interesting lens but why would I declick on a “vintage” lens? Seems odd to me. Don’t need that on a M lens. Also at this size I hope it’s focusing internally. Appreciate the fact though more M-Mount lenses are coming out.
I’ve tested it on the Z8. Both the 28 and 35, both are sharp edge to edge at infinity at f1.4. By the way the APO Lanthars are FLE designs. These guys also make cinelenses under a different brand name that are highly regarded, hence the very nice touch of the clickless aperture. The close focus detente, like some of the newer Leica lenses is also a very nice feature.
I briefly mentioned it in the video, the Simera is sharper up close, it doesn’t have a midzone dip. Bokeh is good on both, I like them equally for their character. From what I can see the Simera has less fringing and less vignetting as well.
Thanks for the review! Do you think its a cheaper Summilux FLE alternative on film and do you think you'll notice Andy differences on film between the two (terms of micro contrast etc.)?
@@GenericPhotographer Wow thanks, that sounds so awesome! Had to sell my Lux FLE for financial reasons but glad to see that there is a chaper alternative now

Thank you for the review! Have you noticed a dip in performance when using it on the Sony?
Increased field curvature and less sharp edges. Only the center third is business as usual. That said stopping it down worked great. I included shots taken at f2 with the a7iv as mentioned.
It does not! I actually cut that part out. The coupling remains but it is non representative of the focus. Gotta switch to live view once you hit .7 unfortunately.
Thanks for this investigation. I had been curious about Thypoc, and this review certainly makes the lens sound excellent. Curious to know where/how you bought your example, as it's still listed as preorder-only at US dealers.
The 28mm f1.4 is the one I’m most interested in, given there’s really only the TT Artisans one that isn’t like $12k CAD, and it doesn’t really perform at f1.4
I have the 35 1.5 nokton asph and it has no glowy look. I'm confused by your comparisons to that lens. In fact I add a 1/4 mist filter to add the glow. Perhaps your review sample was out of calibration? I had to shim mine for accurate focus but if focused using live view it was very sharp. Are you coding this lens or applying lens corrections in post? Vignette looks well-controlled but fringing looks a bit better than my Nokton but worse than the FLE or Distagon. Love the 14 rounded blades on this lens though. more interested in the 28.
Really good review, man, thank you for this! I find it incredible that they managed to do floating elements, it's quite challenging. I think that's one of the secrets to 3d pop. I see it here and this is coming from someone that shoots the Distagon ZM 35/1.4 all the time, there's no better 3d pop than that. Have you had the chance to check out the black finish? I wonder how they compare.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Yeah it’s an impressive lens. That distagon is also amazing! Haven’t seen the black finish and I am curious, hopefully I’ll see one soon!
Thypoch's strategy seems suspicious to me. Only two reviews of the 35mm lens. Both are rather flattering, but it's not enough to form a sufficient opinion. Big promises for the 28mm lens, but so far, ridiculously few test photos at this focal length (most at high apertures, no close focusing tests). Zero reviews 28... I would really like both lenses to be decent and worth the money spent, but due to the way Thypoch currently works, I have great doubts.
Did you address finder blockage? You probably did, but I must have missed it. Less than the zeiss 1.4? More than an asph. Cron? Looks kinda like it’s a fat lens. Would you recommend an OVF for those who like an uninterrupted view? Off topic, but I just picked up a Ricoh 40mm OVF to use with my VT 40mm f2.8 color skopar, and I highly recommend these tiny viewfinders(they have a 28mm too that I am hoping I can find used, as I did with this one). They are about 1/3 the size of the modern leica ovf’s, super bright, and they do leave a bit of room around the frame so it really feels like the M finder. I doubt you use viewfinders, but maybe you know someone who does and there are not many in-depth reviews of them here, or anywhere. One last thing, great job, as always, and thanks.
I mention it in the video a few times. The Simera is optically superior. I haven’t don’t a side by side but the colors seem warmer, there’s less optical vignetting and no focus shift on the Simera. Cheers!
@@GenericPhotographer would you say the Simera is optically better than the 35mm Ultron F2 II ? on a side note, it will be really interesting to compare the 28mm Ultron F2 vs the Simera 28mm, given both a similar price range.
@@dankim3950 hard to compare a 1.4 lens with a f2 lens. They’ve each got their strengths but I’d go for the Simera for the less harsh rendering and speed. I’ll be getting the 28 soon and I can’t wait to see how it performs. I’d be curious to see how it works against the recently announced 28 1.5 from voigtlander but who knows when that lens will be available for me to try.
Seems like a promising product that will offer more choices for a segment of rangefinder users; competition is good. I think the whole aspirational approach to naming the brand is kind of, well, aspirational on Typoch's part. At the end of the day the Leica brand will remain the pinnacle of desirability. Not because Leica is the best (Voigtlander has already proven that) but because of Leica heritage and exclusivity. The Leica approach to branding should be a required course at every business school. Price your product beyond the reach of 85% of buyers and sell a lot. Price it beyond 95% and create a two year wait list, and a used market in which a customer will pay 2x for the product, used, in 10 years...
Mhmm maybe this could be a lens to get away from the 35 cron ASPH. Now I have to wait until samples will arrive in Germany. Seems that no shop have one for now.
It would make for a good alternative when you need that extra speed

Yes, the prices of Leica-branded lenses have become quite steep. I'd prefer to invest less money, and there are now really good alternatives that are perfectly fine.@@GenericPhotographer
For this price, I have no complaint. Although I have the FLE, re-issue Steel rim, Voigtlander 35/1.5, I think this lens is incredible especially when I shoot with the M10 monochrom. And this lens is not like LLL, kind of fussy to put Made in China both in Chinese and English characters on the lens, too busy to say Made in China, I don’t really understand why? No need to mention too much, it’s a copy indeed!
It's not 1955, Leica optical supremacy is not at all universal now, I use a Leica because I love rangefinders, not because I love their glass(though I do like and own some leica glass).
Feel sorry for you if you have the really narrow point of view. Lots of manufacturers makes wonderful lenses for the M system and Leica needs competitors that challenge them. Voigtlander even makes lenses that are better built today then some Leica lenses for a fraction of the price. Cheaper lenses also makes it possible for more people to enjoy and try the Leica camera experience.
How is it a copy? Their 28f1.4 is tiny compared with the 28 lux. The 28 lux doesn’t close focus, nor is it FLE. This one has dynamic zone and hyper focus indicators and clickless aperture like a cinelens. It’s sharp at infinity at f1.4. So how is it a copy?
