Brave of you to still share this with us. You're definitely taking this like a champ. Sorry for your loss, and I'm eagerly waiting for your next success story!
You are laid off, not 'fired' - you weren't terminated due to performance. I am sorry that this happened. And it feels like a shock and can take a bit of time to process.
When a company tells you not to worry, don't believe them. I've been through this myself, seeing most of my coworkers let go and me myself being let go a year or so later. The company was in the process of being acquired by a more powerful company.
I was recently laid off from my job in construction and am taking this time to learn coding! It's never great to lose a job, but I agree: best to make the most of it and focus on ourselves!
You'll be just fine Michael. You have the skillset now that is a job magnet. In fact, you're correct to feel bad about the manager. Chances are, they'll use her to fire people in her team, just to fire herself a month down the road. I've seen this happen a few times. But you'll be fine. Houston is a great market coding jobs. In fact, coding is great everywhere. Learn to live life without shackles for a bit.
Thanks your insight Adam! I think I'm going to take your advice and give the shackle free lifestyle a try. Sounds like a nice way to do a mental reset.
I got terminated too bro. But I was ready. I knew my position was going to be eliminated. So, I started looking for a new job 2 two months ahead. I landed a new job before they could let me go
You’re a good man Michael. You’re videos have helped me when I was struggling with my confidence in programming as a college student. I’ll be praying for you bro.
I just got let go from my web design job, let’s just say it was a blow to my self confidence…but I love your attitude! Your positivity inspires me to keep looking up, thank you for posting this
Michael. This happened to a friend of mine a few months ago! Now he landed on a job that pays more, at a much larger company with better benefits and job security.
Hey you inspired me when I was down and feeling like crap self studying. I went the Revature route and got a job and it took me around 1 year from when I learned HTML to being a full stack developer. Thank you for your channel and you are lucky now you will probably get a better job paying more.
Keep it up! right now you don't know how big of a help sharing those experience to us, I really hope you can keep on sharing your future experience to all of your viewers! Either good or bad happened on your career it is still worth sharing it.😊
Always look at this as an opportunity. It definitely feels weird to be "fired" but don't take it personally - your work ethic and enthusiasm shine through. It's also good you got this first job under your belt like this - now you know not to slave away for some company. I learned this lesson the same way working for a company for 4 years. They eventually "let me go" because of "performance" but what they meant was that I wasn't willing to put in 12 hour days anymore so a normal 8 hour day was "slacking" for them. Take a breather for a little bit but make a plan of action going forward to better yourself. I'm in a different engineering field but my jump in salary was about 80-90% from my first job to my 2nd. Now I work my time allotted there and make it a point that the company respects my time. Good luck!
It's so sad and funny. It's the way you are telling the story for me. 😆😆😆 I'm sure you'll get around. A friend of mine said there is no way you can earn lesser than what you use to before as long as you've had experience before. Was the Job remote?
Ahh Michael. I am sorry to hear you had to go through this, been there done that myself. I know you'll bounce back on your feet. You seem like a very resourceful person. Maybe now would be a great time while you look for work to also try creating a small business on the side? Best wishes to you man.
Please make a video about startups! I don’t want to work for one either but those are the only tech companies that reach out to me to interview because they’re smaller 🙄🙄
I get the feeling. I would just advise to always be grateful for the opportunity. Because they gave you a chance after hundreds of applications you sent, now you have some experience to show for and get a better job. I would have waited at least 24 hours before making a video on this to give you time to unwind and think it through. At the time you made this video you sound like you're still hurt and disappointed at something thats probably going happen at any company no matter its size or how good they are. Now future employers will look a this video and hesitate to contact you or hire you after they see how you respond to this type of things. I admire you and believe you will come out of this stronger. Just remember to always be grateful to those who believed in you when nobody else did. Keep it up!!
Yeah bro, you can't be loyal to these companies they expect so much from you and then as soon as the their profits suffer even a little in a downturn or they are making less in revenues, it's your head on the chopping block. You are a honest, and positive dude, which is important. I pray you get another job soon Michael. Thanks for sharing your story, it's takes alot of courage to open up when you are down! You are totally right you gotta always keep looking for your own benefits with these companies.
The best advices I ever got in regards of work are from my twinbrother and my dad: dad: Keep everyone at an arm length distance .. people have to earn the right to be close to you twin: People at work will never be your friends .. they will be your colleagues what this taught me is that I only go for one specific reason to work and this is to make money ... I like my colleagues dont get me wrong but at the end of the day I'd rather be at home with my wife than at work .. another thing is that when you know you go to work to make money the mindset shifts completely .. you start focusing more on what is important to you .. less procrastination and more efficiency .. the side effect being that you leave stress at work and not at home
So cool of you to share this! :( That sucks so bad! On a positive note, you working extra shows your work ethic and ultimately it's their loss. The experience will come in handy while you are shopping for your next role! :) Also this doesn't help much, but I tend to notice when these things happen usually there is something way better coming up! Sending positive vibes ✨✨✨
Thanks for sharing this with us Michael. Always interesting to actually see what's happening around your journey as a developer And ofc like you said, you'll be okay lol. No big deal. I actually got fired last month from my designer job but it is what it is. I'll be fine too. Anyways, looking forward to see more 🔥
Long a ago, my boss spotted me doing a mistake and since i knew he dont care about people so i certainly knew that he will fire me so i decided to confront him and fire myself even without formal resignation letter, later he called me and continued to to work though i later on quited but i learned a great lesson and that is to not be scared. When things happen, move on. I wish you well.
Tech market is oversaturated... And now Corporations outsource and offshore work to third world countries too... Plus new AI tools such as ChatGPT automates software development... I myself had a bad year too, I spend a ton of money and over 3,000 hours to learn frontend development. And I applied to over 400 jobs, but nobody wants to hire me :(
Only work for what you're getting paid for. Your free time is much more valuable than spending an extra 1 or 2 hours doing something for a company that doesn't care about you and will eventually fire you with no regrets. Keep your head up, Michael!
I just had a chat with my a coworker on how we had no prior experience in tech (IT) and I'm getting paid more than him to do the same thing as him, he was really upset and I asked him "Did you reach out to people already working here and talk salaries, as well as look at the market averages for what we get paid to do? Did you name your salary in your interview?" And he responded no. I'm slowly learning over time that companies indeed do not care about us lol I've been screwed over multiple times at different jobs because I never advocated for myself nor my skill. Hoping that this unfortunate event works out for you and lands you a better opportunity elsewhere!
Most definately "always work 2 jobs". I am resilient now that I do. If I get fired by one IDGAF. Because I can simply work more at the other job. On top. You have a different leverage of negotiating, once you work 2 jobs.
Plus...you gained some valuable experience at your job. The worst thing would have been to not have a job for those months you worked. Now your resume is looking pretty good.
I got fired yesterday because apparently I am not good enough for them.. :( even though on the interview they said I only had to do html and css stuff since I am a beginner, and even though I was doing my job right, the senior developer was rewriting all my code without explaining it, and give bad feedback about me to the company ceo because "I don't do any programming tasks" and they didn't hire me for that..... I think it's not my fault?? 🥲
This video is definitely going to be the one you look back at and say, "That's when my priorities shifted and the youtube channel started to take off."
Thanks for sharing man, I feel for you hard. Don’t worry, you’re a hard working guy, you’re going to find the next thing soon. God bless you!! Thank you for the advice!
Hey Michael, this is actually my first ever youtube comment, but your video compelled me to write you something. First off, attitude is everything in this situation, and you've always got a great one. So as you said, I have no doubt that you'll come out of this better than ever...by hook or by crook! :) I experienced my first layoff when I was about your age, and it was the most terrifying/best thing that ever happened to me professionally. I'm sure this will be the case for you too. Keep your head up, brother. Excited to see what the future holds for you!
Working extra hours and overtime can be good or bad depending on the company and your situation. If you’re in a company that’s growing it can definitely let you climb the ladder faster. If not then you’re right it’s a waste. I always encourage juniors to learn as much as you can on or off the job since it takes a lot is time and practice to be a great engineer. The younger you are the more time you need to put in outside of work.
Wow, so sorry to hear about you being laid off. I hope the best for you and I am glad that you are taking this so positively. You definitely seem like the type to make good out of this, wish you the best! How's the Unity learning experience going on btw?
I was going through their beginner course and started putting together a little game of my own. It really was a breath of fresh air. I want to get back to focusing on game dev asap, just have to handle this little situation first lol.
The truth is, that we are in a bubble, so only the strong will survive and only people who love it will stick with it, the idea of getting 100-150k salary is gonna be like 50-80k
Michael, do you think a man like you will have a hard time to find another job? Definitely no, believe me, good people like you will find the way, sometimes the way find them, just take a rest for a month or so, then keep trying to find something else, don't give up ... without a fight!
Hey Michael, Very sorry to hear about the lay off... It's unfortunately going to happen a lot to Devs in the coming months... Maybe I can help: I'm an ex-Google recruiter who now runs a resume writing business for Software Developers. I've messaged you on Twitter about writing yours for free, if you're interested :-)
Tbh, he probably should have quit for another job right about now anyway, he will probably be hired for 50% more than what he was paid at the end of this job, and he will probably be hired rather quickly
The days of staying in one job your whole life or a good portion of your life are no longer. Unless you work at UPS, and even then, not really given all the automation coming down the pipeline.

Stay strong man. Can hear the level up chime already lol
Subscribed. Great to see another brother out here doing his thing.
You’re a good man Michael. You’re videos have helped me when I was struggling with my confidence in programming as a college student. I’ll be praying for you bro.
Links to those videos?
I just got let go from my web design job, let’s just say it was a blow to my self confidence…but I love your attitude! Your positivity inspires me to keep looking up, thank you for posting this
Way to look at the glass half full bro! Better things are yet to come. Excited to see how this shakes out.
You somehow are a champ brother, keep your head clear, this is probably a new opportunity for you to create something!
Much love from Balkans! ♥️
Let's goo Michael, cant wait to see where the journey takes you
Your mindset is pure magic. 💯
Michael. This happened to a friend of mine a few months ago! Now he landed on a job that pays more, at a much larger company with better benefits and job security.
any update un your situation? I'm about to get into a very similar one, just wondering if you might have any tips for me 😊
I’m sad you lost you’re job but I can’t wait to see all your new content now. Keep it going champ! 💪
I'm sorry to hear brother. Looking forward to see what opportunities pop up for you. Best of luck!
Wish you the best for the future
the focused message is in the 10 last seconds of the video, thanks for sharing this experience
Hey you inspired me when I was down and feeling like crap self studying. I went the Revature route and got a job and it took me around 1 year from when I learned HTML to being a full stack developer.
Thank you for your channel and you are lucky now you will probably get a better job paying more.
Literally same thing happened to me with my first dev job this past May. Had the realization about all the free time I had now to do what I want lmao
This is the truth!
Good attitude bro, u will success in future with this mindset. 🤙🏻
Keep it up! right now you don't know how big of a help sharing those experience to us, I really hope you can keep on sharing your future experience to all of your viewers! Either good or bad happened on your career it is still worth sharing it.😊

Yea it was remote
You're 💯% right. Keep it up Michael!!!
You will be fine Micheal. Sending you so much love
Bigger and better things coming your way bro, 💪🏼
Sorry to hear that bro. But when one door closes, many doors open. You already have web-dev experience, do it will be an easy ride for you mate.
Ahh Michael. I am sorry to hear you had to go through this, been there done that myself. I know you'll bounce back on your feet. You seem like a very resourceful person. Wel if my man is still jobless now means they saw this video. Sucks and it be like that 🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️
Props to you Michael. I think you can bounce back really fast.
Agree with leaving things half done. Have spent so much extra time trying to wrap up work instead of spending it unwinding with family
Yeah bro, you can't be loyal to these companies they expect so much from you and then as soon as the their profits suffer even a little in a downturn or they are making less in revenues, it's your head on the chopping block. Always be cautious when looking for a role at growth stage startups. Being let go is a blessing. You can demand a higher salary at your next role
I wish I knew just how chaotic a growth stage startup would be. I feel SO relieved to be done with that company lol.
Only work for what you're getting paid for. Your free time is much more valuable than spending an extra 1 or 2 hours doing something for a company that doesn't care about you and will eventually fire you with no regrets.
Keep your head up, Michael!
You're young my friend. This industry is cutthroat.
I just had a chat with my a coworker on how we had no prior experience in tech (IT) and I'm getting paid more than him to do the same thing as him, he was really upset and I asked him "Did you reach out to people already working here and talk salaries, as well as look at the market averages for what we get paid to do? The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way. You got this.
Startups are a good place to get some experience, but not good if you are looking for stability.
Most definately "always work 2 jobs". I am resilient now that I do. If I get fired by one IDGAF. Because I can simply work more at the other job.

That would be nice!
Good or bad, I believe things happen for a reason.
You’re definitely going to be ok brother…🍻
Damn bro, you're super optimistic, can you make a video about what keeps you optimistic about yourself and the future? I'm genuinely curious
Sure! That sounds like fun content to make :)
only on to better things
Thanks for sharing man, I feel for you hard. Don’t worry, you’re a hard working guy, you’re going to find the next thing soon. God bless you!! Thank you for the advice!
💪🏾 you’ll be gucci bro
Can you give us some practical advice like what to study, what other sources of income to invest in, stuff x, stuff y, etc... if you can, thank you
Hey Michael, this is actually my first ever youtube comment, but your video compelled me to write you something. thank you for this video
Hate that for you. But you will rebound. This is just opening the door for something great!
Everyone now regrets working hard and being loyal to Corporate America. What is the lesson learned from this layoff?
Always make sure any job you take is a compounding investment in yourself :)
That's what I took away at least
Working extra hours and overtime can be good or bad depending on the company and your situation. If you’re in a company that’s growing it can definitely let you climb the ladder faster. If not then you’re right it’s a waste.

You definitely seem like the type to make good out of this, wish you the best!
How's the Unity learning experience going on btw?
I was going through their beginner course and started putting together a little game of my own. It really was a breath of fresh air. I want to get back to focusing on game dev asap, just have to handle this little situation first lol.
chip up bro, im sure you'll find something even better
The truth is, that we are in a bubble, so only the strong will survive and only people who love it will stick with it, the idea of getting 100-150k salary is gonna be like 50-80k
Wishing you the best, man!
Michael, do you think a man like you will have a hard time to find another job? Definitely no, believe me, good people like you will find the way, sometimes the way find them, just take a rest for a month or so, then keep trying to find something else, don't give up ... without a fight!
Any update?
Not yet, had to sort some stuff out but I'm back on the attack again :)
Are you still working on C#/Unity? Are you attempting to do those as a career?
Jumped back into the world of web dev for a bit to play with AI lol, but I'll be back to game dev soon enough
Is it worth it to learn web dev in 2023? I heard it's super saturated now. Losing motivation.
your manager was a pro man , well played
truly a solid performance
Hey Michael,
Very sorry to hear about the lay off... It's unfortunately going to happen a lot to Devs in the coming months...
Maybe I can help: I'm an ex-Google recruiter who now runs a resume writing business for Software Developers.
I've messaged you on Twitter about writing yours for free, if you're interested :-)
4:47 I know too cause you have 6 months unemployment! You'll definitely have something by then
I gave him a glance and thought he was Myth from the Fortnite team
hahaha I've heard this forever
Bro If you got fired then what am I gonna do. I started learning because of you.
It takes balls to be hurt and talking like champ, I'm 100% sure you'll be ok soon
you're worth so much more. watch, you'll strike gold. it's undoubtedly bound to happen.
Well, damn. As a guy still self-learning and trying to get into tech. This is a huge demotivater.
I'm sorry you got laid off.
Nah bro. The skills he's gained just by learning to code is priceless. I'm like you, don't give up. This should even motivate us the more.
don't be demotivated, it happens. just part of life. keep up the hard work
Tbh, he probably should have quit for another job right about now anyway, he will probably be hired for 50% more than what he was paid at the end of this job, and he will probably be hired rather quickly
The days of staying in one job your whole life or a good portion of your life are no longer. Unless you work at UPS, and even then, not really given all the automation coming down the pipeline.
Like the others have said don't let this demotivate you. I'll definitely be earning more at my next job and now I know what kind of position I want and the kind of work I enjoy doing.
Yup
And now you qualify for unemployment benefits until your next dev job! You can skill up in the meantime!
That's the plan!
isnt fired & laid off different?, I think u were laid off..
Yea I was technically laid off
you'll be good fam but i suggest you maybe take this video down, i get the frustration brother i do, but this comes off too frustrating you know, only saying that because it may prevent you from getting hired if your future possible employers look you up
Soo.. I guess its a worst possible time to begin taken courses at Udemy etc. I mean no one going to hire a no experience self taught wannabe coders. 😒
not fired, is laid off :)
You weren’t “fired”, you were laid off. There is a big difference. I was also laid off from my position as well. During a economic down fall companies have to cut back and I expect this game because I know it well. But, don’t take it personal brother keep working hard.
