They are from Flint, Michigan. Mark Farner, on lead vocals and guitar. Mel Sch acne r on bass and Don Brewer on drums. Unfortunately, they broke up years ago. Saw them live a couple of times back in the 70's. Met Mark Farner back stage at a concert. Great performer and one of the nicest guys. Try Heartbreaker by them.

The crazy thing is that they played like this for close to three hours a night. Their intensity and swag was off the chain. I don't think I have ever seen a better band live. And back in the day I saw everybody. GFR was on an island of there own...

Dyce, I so glad you listened to this great performance !! Great reaction !! GFR was from Flint, Mi. and In their day, they ROCKED !! GFR Always gave it 110%
and Left their hearts on the stage. They closed each show with this song. Mark's guitar was an Eastwood Messenger that fed-back terribly so he covered the f-holes with tape. It came with like a "boost" gain switch, which was kinda ahead of it's time. They had a RABID Fan base (mostly "Chicks"). When they opened a show for someone, they always
"Up-Staged" the main act, even Led Zep (Half the crowd left when Led Zep came on.)!! Led Zep
never let them open for them ever again !!
When they opened for Rod Stewart and the Faces, the crowd Boo'ed Rod Stewart off the stage !!
    When promoters finally realized
just how popular they were, GFR became the "Main Act". GFR became known as the
    originators of "Stadium Rock". They
filled stadiums across the USA and Europe and sold out Shea Stadium in New York, in 72-hours !! The Beatles took
    3-weeks to sell-out Shea !!
I saw them twice in 1971 and they were AWESOME !! That year, at Pirates World in Dania, Fl.
the Promoters sold 15,000 tickets for a outdoor venue, that only held 10,000 and the people
who couldn't get in rioted and over-turned 3 City of Miami police cars !!
If their manager (a friend) hadn't taken every penny and all their rights, even the guitars and Amps !! He left them
NOTHING, or they would have been the biggest Band EVER !!
Their leader and front man Mark Farner is still rock'in today, after decades of legal battles
to finally, get the "rights" back enough to play GFR songs again !! GFR is the best thing to
ever come out of Flint, Michigan (except maybe the GM Buick). There is NO GFR without
Mark Farner !! WAKE UP R&R Hall of Fame !! It is criminal GFR is not in the HOF !!

I saw Grand Funk 6 times between 1970-74. They were one of the most intense lived acts around. Seeing them in 1970 with Mountain and Jimi Hendrix was so unbelievable that I still remember it all vividly. One of the few concerts I never smoked pot at (I was recovering from bronchitis and couldn’t handle smoking). Grand Funk were also famous for long and LOUD shows.

I was always poo pooing GFR in the early 80's I was a metal head. But i couold never find my favorite "hard rock " song I ever heard. It wasn't until I matured and in the 90's I gave GFR another listen. OMG.. I was shocked. I even called up a couple of old buddies and said " I'm sorry, you were right!!!! GFR is the SHIT!!!" I've been a fan now for over 30 years .....10 years late.

50 years ago 5 of us 12 year old kids used to pitch in a dollar each and get a nickel bag.
we would get 7 joints from it , we all smoked 2 , and got 1 each for later.

Another great tune you might like is the live version of :Black Coffee" by Humble Pie. Lead singer Steve Marriott was also in Faces during the 1960s. "Tin Soldier" is my favorite song from Faces.

The sad thing is that Grand Funk never got the respect they deserved. The critics hated them, and in many respects they still do. It makes zero sense to me.

Because of their manager Tery Knight. Terry would blow off interviews and walk out of press conferences to give the band a " Mystique " , Terry even took out a 2 page ad in Rolling Stone Magazine giving everyone the middle Finger.
It seemed to work and gave Grand Funk a huge audience , but The Rock Hall said they will never induct Grand Funk. and the Hall are connected to Rolling Stone and MTV.
Terry also ripped off Grand Funk of all their money, 57 million.
But without Terry there would be no Grand Funk.
