She looks disgusted throughout the whole video. The grimace on her face is what's really unfunny. Was she angry? Did she have a bad day? An uncomfortable hemorrhoid maybe? Was he forcing her to watch this movie that she clearly doesn't want to watch?
Tim Burton has said the original poem was inspired after seeing Halloween merchandise display in a store being taken down and replaced by a Christmas display. The juxtaposition of ghouls and goblins with Santa and his reindeer sparked his imagination.
2:53 "is this a musical"?. Yes. In fact: the music NEVER stops in this movie. There's not one second when the music ISN'T playing. Danny elfman wrote a continuous score. Pure genius
@@unvoicedapollo3318Henry Selick came to my university in the 90’s and gave some talks shortly after this came out. One of our art professors knew him and he came to our small school Austin Peay State University in Tenn. It was pretty cool.
The Mrs. is right, The Mad Scientist is voiced by Uncle Lewis from Christmas Vacation, William Hickey. Someone has mentioned Jack's voice being done by Chris Sarandon & his singing part by Danny Elfman, and Sally being voiced by Catherine O'Hara (she also voices one of the witches), and those are true, but here are some other voices - the mayor is voiced by Otho from Beetlejuice, Glenn Shadix, the kid dressed as Satan is voiced by Paul Reubens and the creature at 22:39 is voiced by Greg Proops from Whose Line Is It Anyway? Sally's design is based on Tim Burton's ex-girlfriend Lisa-Marie, who has also been in a couple of his movies. The actual director of this movie, Henry Selick, has done other stop motion movies such as James & The Giant Peach (which is also live action), Coraline, Wendell & Wild and Monkeybone (also live action). You should definitely check out Corpse Bride, and Tim Burton actually directed that movie. Corpse Bride is based on a Russian (I think) folklore.
It's unusual that Mrs. Movies is more of a Christmas person because she has the personality and look of someone that should be in a Tim Burton movie! lol I watch a ton of reactions and when there are movies that people cry over, she usually is the last people that's gonna cry and get emotional.
Disney initially released the film through the Touchstone Pictures label because the studio believed the film's gothic tone would be "too dark and scary for kids". To convey Burton's involvement and attract a wider audience, Disney marketed the film as "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas".
Both songs Jack sings in the graveyard. Jacks my hero. Reaches the brink of insanity and comes back. One of the best love stories ever. And of course it's a Christmas movie.
Tim Burton admitted that his character Jack is based on the appearance (not personality) of Jack Pumpkinhead in Disney's 1985 Return to Oz, which like all the characters in this movie is based in turn on the original early 1900's John Neill drawings in L. Frank Baum's second and third sequel, Marvelous Land of Oz and Ozma of Oz. This creature was cobbled together from a large jack-o-lantern carved pumpkin for a head, with sticks tied together and second-hand clothes, as a practical joke to scare the witch Mombi. Instead, she animates him by using her recently purchased Powder of Life. Oz Jack is a very loving character who realizes that since he as only been alive for such a short time, is aware of his intellectual limitations.
Nightmare Before Christmas has a great soundtrack and is a great movie. The movie starts in "Minor Key" whenever Jack is in Halloweentown. Whenever hes in Xmastown, songs are in "Major Key". When Jack cones back to Halloweentown, Jack gets a better appreciation for what he has and then its a mix of "Major" and "Minor".
One of my favorite animated movies ever made! It was nominated for Best Visual Effects but lost to JURASSIC PARK. The songs were written by Danny Elfman and even sang as the voice of Jack Skellington. Vincent Price, Don Ameche and James Earl Jones were considered for voicing Santa Claus, but they all passed on the role. Ed Ivory voiced Santa as well as the narrator in the opening scene. It made $107 million dollars against an $18 million dollar budget.
Jack's speaking voice is done by Christ Sarandon while the singing is done by Danny Elfman who did the songs and the scores for the movie. Elfman also voices Barrel and The Clown.
What's this! A masterpiece film! Somehow I didn't watch this movie until 3 years ago. I was in High School when it came out so I obviously wanted nothing to do with it. I definitely wouldn't have appreciated it back than.
Tim did a Halloween themed version of Tis the Night Before Christmas back when he worked for Disney. After the success of BatMan he asked them for the rights back and Disney insisted told him he could make it under Disney name. I love this movie

There's an album of all the songs from this film being performed by rock/metal musicians. Marylin Manson sings a version of "This is Halloween". Korn does a version of "Kidnap Sandy Claws". Rise Against does a version of "Making Christmas". I absolutely love those versions of these songs.
Well I learned something new from the video. The Nightmare Before Christmas is a play on The Night Before Christmas. I seriously always wondered what the title meant and never put two and two together.

Now we should have a little spin off tale of Mrs Movies living in Thanksgiving Town. Will she cope with the thankfulness everyday? Can she sing enough songs for it?
I highly recommend tracking down the 1993 OST and listening to Patrick Stewart's version of the opening and ending narration. The prologue goes into slightly more detail about the holiday worlds (after the point that the film's opening cuts to 'This is Halloween'), which might've headed off some of the confusion about who Santa Jack was meant to be delivering presents to. There's also an epilogue that doesn't exist in the film. It starts off with "And finally everything worked out just fine. Christmas was saved, though there wasn't much time. But after that night, things were never the same -- each holiday now knew the other one's name..."
I remember being too scared to watch this one in theaters. Instead I stayed home and watched a movie called Bingo, about a circus dog that runs away and is adopted by a child until his family moves. The dog then gets into all sorts of hijinks including escaping from prison after being held in contempt of court. This is a live action movie with a real dog by the way.
