RIP to the late, great Ken Page. We lost him on September 30 this year and I’m still in disbelief. He gave us countless amazing performances as Oogie Boogie in theme parks, video games, etc for 31 years. He made an immortal staple of Halloween all on his own and sang Oogie’s Song like it was the first time every single time. Rest well, King of Seven Holidays.
He was amazing in this, but I will always remember him as Old Deuteronomy in the filmed stage version of Cats, alongside Elaine Paige. That's where I was first introduced to his amazing voice and stage presence 🥰
And even better, he gave us a live performance of Poor Unfortunate Souls that knocked it out of the park. A tragedy we didn't get to enjoy a full cover album of villain songs. But, he gave us what he could. And for that, we are grateful for this legend.
"He seems scary." I think this is one of my FAVORITE aspects about Jack. His dichotomy. He can be terrifying when he needs to be. Scaring Locke, Shock and Barrel into submission. He's earned the title Pumpkin King by being terrifying to humans. But he's also gentlemanly. Even tempered. Kind. Whereas Oogie frightens people through harm, Jack would never do such a thing. You'd probably feel quite safe with him. However. He is the Pumpkin King for a reason. So Aaron pointing out his more creepy tendencies? Like spider-like crawling, the table flip...heck. Even him on the angle statue is a haunting image...it's pretty spot on. Jack is easily my favorite Disney character right after Mickey himself. And TNBC is my favorite movie of all time. It's what got me into film. I'm always glad to see people react to it. One of my favorite shots in the film is that 360 camera shot of Jack on the angel statue; how they did that I have no idea. Because it's stop motion. They would've had to maneuver Jack himself as well as move the camera. It's insane to think about.
I love that when Jack is at his lowest point, he's just like "You know what? I tried my best, and I failed but at least I had fun". He doesn't need anyone to tell him that. It's so simple, but so inspiring.
I think it is obvious that the residents of Halloweentown go out to the real world on Halloween and the opening song is them all coming back to Halloweentown and celebrating the day. They are giving out rewards like who sucked the most blood and such. If the real world will openly accept that an imposter Santa was ruining Christmas and then the REAL Santa saves it, then they probably accept monsters and ghosts being around on Halloween.
Fun fact: The official soundtrack for Nightmare Before Christmas has an extra track: a bit of extra narration from Patrick Steward bookending the one from the opening that was meant to be in the credits or the ending but was cut for whatever reason. The narration, which is revealed to be Santa himself, says that Santa came back to Halloween Town many years later to visit Jack. In that time, he found out that he and Sally had started a family ('4 or 5 skeleton children at hand, playing strange tunes in their xylophone band'). The poetic narration concludes: And I asked old Jack, do you remember the night When the sky was so dark, and the moon shone so bright? When a million small children pretending to sleep Nearly didn’t have Christmas at all, so to speak? And would, if you could, turn that mighty clock back To that long fateful night-now think carefully, Jack! Would you do the whole thing all over again, Knowing what you know now, knowing what you knew then? And he smiled like the old Pumpkin King that I knew, Then turned and asked softly of me… _“Wouldn’t you?”_
You guys were talking about Oogie and Jack’s possible past and there’s actually a prequel manga about that very topic. They used to be close friends but when the pumpkin king was planning to retire and name a single successor the two became rivals for the title.
One of my favorite fanfics of all time gives them a really good backstory. It's called "A Walk in the Dark". How Jack and Oogie are connected there is genius.
@@pinkiebee2903 That doesn't matter. The script for the Sam Raimi film "Spider-Man (2002)" was based on a treatment by James Cameron, but they don't call "Spider-Man" a James Cameron film.
Danny Elfman wrote all the songs and the music for the film(10 songs) and sang the main character Jack Skellington and multiple others. Disney movies back then had a song writer and a different person for the score and most only had 5 songs! Danny Elfmans the reason this movie cooks!
I am so glad Aaron mentioned the table flip with Jack on it, I can't explain it, but that is my favourite moment in the whole film, it makes me smile every time. I don't see this as a Halloween or Christmas film, it's both, it's book ended with the two holidays but is set mostly in the time between the two.
Spoiler for the Nightmare Before Christmas book about Sally: "Long Live the Pumpkin Queen". Dr. Finkelstein didn't create Sally. He'd tried and failed to make a daughter. He used a book of long forgotten towns. He went to 'Dream Town' to study their plants. He came across a young ragdoll, Sally, he kidnapped her and took her back to his lab. He created a plan to pass her off as his 'creation' to gain respect as a mad scientist. So, he pulled out all of her cotton stuffing and replaced it dry autumn leaves, used his plants to wipe her memory, and then passed her off as his creation. That's why he was so strict about not letting her go anywhere, he couldn't risk her remembering the truth outside of his laboratory. That's probably why she didn't react the like the rest of Halloween Town Residents about the Spooky Christmas, she's not originally not from Halloween Town. In the new book she learns the whole truth, and Jack ends up basically banishing Dr. Finkelstein to pay off his debt to Sally's parents, the Governors of Dream Land, while Sally gets unrestricted access to his lab and gardens until the end of time.
Jack wasn't reallyx bored of Halloween, he just felt off, he thought doing something new would be the solution, but he was really just lonely. It was when he finds Sally that last time that he comes to his senses. I don't think the movie was saying "stay in your lane", Jack was a professional, the best there is, but he was alone. Sharing what you love, finding the one, etc, that might be more the spirit of it.
10:52 you just made me realize something: the Narrator said that hub world was "something you've seen in your dreams", and Jack reached it right after he woke up from sleepwalking. that's probably nothing, but it's neat to think about.
Speaking of musicals, y'all should definitely check out Epic the Musical once it all comes out on Christmas. Lot of animatics by really talented artists on TH-cam to help with a visual aid and the music is amazing
I watch the movie up till the end of Oogie’s Song for Halloween, then I tap out, and for Christmas I’ll watch it all the way through. I feel like Oogie’s Song is the last fully Halloween scene of the movie and the rest is Christmas.
I've said this before and I'm sure I'm not the only one who noticed, but Sally shows Jack the meaning of Christmas in the beginning of the movie with the gift, but he doesn't get it.
What’s up with Aaron whenever the turkey tree shows up? Why is he so concerned about people who don’t celebrate thanksgiving but doesn’t care about the people who dont celebrate any of the other holiday trees? Thought it was funny
I think one of the best things you can say about this movie is when rewatching almost every single song makes you say "oh yeah, this is my favourite song!" when it comes up
I don’t even care, I call this a Halloween movie haha, it’s perfect for mid November ngl but I always watch it before Halloween, the music is more halloweeny
I'm glad Aaron kept bringing up KH: any fans of this movie who haven't checked out the series should at least see how KH2 depicted it, as it takes place after and has some great moments with sandy claws
Wohoo, awesome movie & reaction! 😎 Hey @BlindWave - You might wanna check out (and maybe even react to) VoicePlay's cover of Oogie Boogie's Song. It's a fantastic take! 🥳
This is one of those movies that hit close to heart and was a childhood favorite but I wouod never watch it again I hate the style of the movie as a adult 😭
I feel like there could have been a moment in there about how people appreciate Jack at the right moment to kind of drive home the concept that people DO like Jack and Halloween. Just to give him the inspiration that he does bring joy, like he wanted, just not in the same way that Christmas does. Movie's still great, just feel like it was missing that one beat.
Cinemawins recently covered this movie and one shocking part is just how short the movie is (not as a slight, un a "man, movies nowadays are really long" way) He noted that 15 minutes into the movie and we're already at "WHAT'S THIS!?" where if the movie was made today we might not even be at Halloweentown yet
They should've watched this perfectly in-between Halloween and December. Then Eric could've been dressed up in a costume and Aaron could wear a Christmas sweater.
Imma say it. I'm 24 years old...and I am one of the only human beings on planet Earth that hasn't seen The Nightmare Before Christmas. Guess that changes today. 💜
You guys really should listen to/react to the Voiceplay version of the Oogie Boogie song. It is so damn good! Would love if you did some A Capella music reactions.
I watched it for the first time yesterday. I couldn't watch it before because the visuals scares me. Hahahaha now that I'm old it still scared me a bit😂
Many people still debate to this day whether this is a Halloween or Christmas movie! Regardless, it's still one of the best to blend both joy and fear so perfectly! 🎃🎄

I feel this was where most kids of that generation learned about cultural appropriation. It's ok to appreciate others cultures but as soon as you try to pretend they're your own things go horribly wrong.
So many questions, you have to be faking it making it a worse reaction. No way all those things needed to be asked if you just want to watch and experience for yourself, especially if you already played KH. Still appreciative you give the Halloween town folks their due, not thinking they are evil or stupid like some reactors.
There was a video game sequel to the movie set one year after the events of the movie called Oggie's Revenge where a resurrected Oggie takes over Halloween Town and Jack has to defeat Oggie once and for all to take back the town.
I used to think this is a Halloween movie but I’ve come to feel that this is a Christmas movie. Christmas is tied into the central themes and ideas and the movie is commenting on Christmas and its relation to other holidays.
I do like that they had this world where Santa is real and human adults just accept it because I mean gifts appear out of nowhere every year but I feel like in most Christmas things adults act as if Santa is not real and that always bothered me as a kid, like, how do you explain gifts that you didn't buy

That sucks. I loved the music when I was first young, and I rekindled my love watching this with my niece and nephew.
Yeah, dorky little 7-year-old me was big into Cats, so that's where I knew him from too

I’ve started to accept that the only reason he chose that door and the plot happened was because Jack went “Oooo Shiny”
this movie is how i imagine the addams family celebrates christmas

Director: Henry Selick
Movie: Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas
Poor guy
it was Tim's idea Tim's story he was just too busy doing batman to Direct it should Henry get some credit yes should he get all credit no
Then he directs Coraline which has nothing to do with Tim Burton at all and everyone thinks it's a Tim Burton film. Can't. Catch. A. Break.

There's a sequel to this movie in the form of a novel, which follows Sally. It's worth a read if you ever get a chance.
No matter how many times I have watched this movie(and I've watch it so many times as its one of my favorites), I still laugh at the "Bunny" moment.

The Nightmare Before Christmas is a legendary childhood masterpiece!!
I think it's a Christmas movie because it takes place after Halloween and is about learning the true meaning of Christmas.

Yall should watch Coraline next
This was a surprise but i'am glad you guys are reacting to this because this is so good
Now I want Coraline even though it’s December 😂
The third, Lock (Devil) was voiced by Danny Elfman himself.
As a British kid watching this, the fact that there was a Turkey on a tree did confuse me, since here turkey is a Christmas food
I've said this before and I'm sure I'm not the only one who noticed, but Sally shows Jack the meaning of Christmas in the beginning of the movie with the gift, but he doesn't get it.
Perfect for the season! Thank you guys!

I think one of the best things you can say about this movie is when rewatching almost every single song makes you say "oh yeah, this is my favourite song!" when it comes up
If I am correct the Director said this is a Halloween movie
Nightmare before christmas is a HALLOWEEN movie ABOUT CHRISTMAS!!
Fun reaction though

Different things scare different people. Don't feel bad about what scares you.

I know you guys normally don't do songs but you really should watch the Oogie Boogie song cover by Voice Play

Would there even be reaction videos if it were not for overthinking fans?
I feel this was where most kids of that generation learned about cultural appropriation. It's ok to appreciate others cultures but as soon as you try to pretend they're your own things go horribly wrong.
This was my sister’s favorite movie, she died in a car accident this year 💜
I'm so sorry to hear that. May her memory be a blessing on you and the rest of your family.
OK I've replayed 29:34 way too many times. 🤣🤣🤣 Aaron's reaction is HILARIOUS!
So many questions, you have to be faking it making it a worse reaction. No way all those things needed to be asked if you just want to watch and experience for yourself, especially if you already played KH.
Still appreciative you give the Halloween town folks their due, not thinking they are evil or stupid like some reactors.
Aaron always does that. He's the king of over-thinking it, which to me is part of his charm.
40:56 Santa Claus is prejudice against skeletons. Who knew?
this is a halloween movie but ok...
as someone from Latam, i did wonder what the other trees were until i learned about your other holidays lol
"This is digital, right". 😂😂
These young folks are warped by modern movies.
First time seeing this movie, WITH KIDS is insane
There was a video game sequel to the movie set one year after the events of the movie called Oggie's Revenge where a resurrected Oggie takes over Halloween Town and Jack has to defeat Oggie once and for all to take back the town.
I used to think this is a Halloween movie but I’ve come to feel that this is a Christmas movie. Christmas is tied into the central themes and ideas and the movie is commenting on Christmas and its relation to other holidays.
I fucking love this movie. At one time I knew all the lyrics. Jack of is all over my apartment. 😂 I need to watch it again this christmas.
Can't think about Kingdom Hearts' Halloween Town world, and not immediately start humming This Is Halloween instrumental music
Cultural appropriation the movie
I do like that they had this world where Santa is real and human adults just accept it because I mean gifts appear out of nowhere every year but I feel like in most Christmas things adults act as if Santa is not real and that always bothered me as a kid, like, how do you explain gifts that you didn't buy
