- In the small town of Pemberton, British Columbia, the hulking north face of Mt. Currie dominates the skyline. Yet even after a decade of winters spent skiing in Pemberton, Townsend has never been up or down the mountain that steals your gaze from every spot in town. Though most often skied with a helicopter drop, Townsend joins Jon Johnston and Chris Rubens on a foot powered slog up and down it's 7,000+ foot face. Mt. Currie doesn't come easily though as crucial decision making, route finding and an exhausting day make the this classic as truly special one.
This is line 5 completed of The FIFTY, a project following Cody Townsend as he attempts to climb and ski all fifty of the lines and mountains chronicled in the book, "The 50 Classic Ski Descents of North America." The series documents Townsend's journey's, travels, challenges and each line and mountain listed in the book. It's a journey through the most majestic mountains and ski lines in North America along with a unique insight into how skiers make decisions in the backcountry, how they plan, navigate and safely move through the mountains and the people that dedicate their lives to the mountains.

I love how relatable this series is to the backcountry skier. Seeing pros go through sufferfests and variable conditions makes it seem more normal now.

Heli may be easier, but this is so much more respectful of the mountain. Plus the uphill makes for great video too!
No credit card swiping can replace the adventure of the up. It makes the down so much better too.

Very Type 2. Rewatching I remembered how hard of a struggle it was. Simply recalling it from memory and all I think about was how fun it was. The definition of Type 2 fun.

Just watched this with my kids. We live in Whistler and so excited to see not just Joffre, but Mt Currie tackled by Cody and the crew. Our 14 y/o daughter summarised your risk management approach as "you took control of the risks as opposed to the mountain deciding the risks" healthy west coast mentality - thanks

If anyone is wondering, as I did, the “Jack” they referred to is Jack Hannan, who was killed in an avalanche on Mount Currie on March 31, 2010. The group he was with was dropped off by a helicopter, they skied carefully, but a massive avalanche released in an adjacent couloir. Hannan was lower than the rest of the group, more exposed to the slide and was carried over 1500 feet. His group found him quickly but he succumbed to trauma. (Source powder magazine April 3, 2010) RIP

Enjoying this series. Found it eery to hear Jon talk about Jack's death but glad to see safety focus & open discussion of risks. Grew up with Jack and comes to mind whenever I hear about Pemberton, Jon, or things get deep at Jay. Assuming @15:53 credit is homage to Jack Hannan (not Hannah)
I never really knew much about that accident and didn't realize it was a natural slide from above that came down... tragic bad luck.
I am so impressed with the stamina of the crew. To hike up 9 or more hours and then have the leg strength to ski the difficult line you earned is quite unbelievable. I am glad you are up to it because I am enjoying this series very much!

I don't know if it's in the book, but talking about big mountains, you should do Mt. Tom outside this series. You can get 8,000' vert in a good year.
Hearing that crusty snow at the other side of the atlantic helps me a lot with fomo.

Good, this is really excellent. Skiing trees, avalanche paths, repelling into chutes. It is an adventure that extends so far beyond just making ski turns on a steep face. Join us, Cody, we do something called Wind Mountaineering here in Colorado.

This is awesome! Me and a couple of mates hiked up Currie in Summer 2017. Absolutely savage on foot with day packs so I can only imagine what you guys went through!
Videos like this reminds me of why I love back country skiing, the part at the end where it was dark and you were all exhausted but you sound so stoked at the same time. Love that feeling. And it's so inspiring to see Cody skiing "slowly and carefully, guys" down that steep/shitty part, cuz hey, we've all been there, and apparently even the pros! I love how safety oriented you are and your outlook on skiing in general. Thanks for the inspiration, the stoke is real :)

Nice work, a proper dark to dark day in the mountains! Getting the line is one thing but documenting it this well adds a new level of complexity many don't realize.

Nah. The amount of weight an overnight kit adds would ensure you're sleeping out whereas going lighter can help ensure you'll be home in time for dinner.

Just re watched. Love it, skied central in April (for the 2nd time, and have skied pencil once) in absolutely bomber conditions. We heli'd, but got the first lines down, probably the best run of my life. Our exit was hell though, down climbing from the bottom of the rock garden.

I´m wondering when you are repelling, why you don't use a prusik knot as a backup? Is there any reason not to do that with skis on? Thanks for great vid!
Matěj Eberle I typically back up with an auto blocker if it’s free hanging, if something overhead could fall into me and knock me off the rope or if it involves multiple raps...this had none of those scenarios so I deemed it not necessary.

Super cool adventure! I skied that same line in 2018. The top 3,000 ft was some of the best I'v ever skied. The bottom 3,000 ft was some of the worst! I'll aways remember down climbing through steep thick trees on icy avy debris.

nice job ...climbed middle gully to rock band, spent night , then up diagonal to summit , then back down diagonal chute, first descent May 7th, 85 with Beat Steiner ..It was fun ! Nice Job Cody
Why does your name make me think of attempts to ski Mt Robson decades ago? There was a much publicized/aborted attempt or 2 way back when I believe.
I'm a little suppressed they didn't consider the summer trail from the Motocross track. We hiked/skied up it to the summit last year and it was pretty good.

Awesome mission! Love seeing you guys fight your way up onto the ridge...can totally relate skiing here in Montana! Curious what type rope you like to carry for your ski mtneering adventures (diameter, length, etc)? Really enjoying the episodes!
Carry many various ropes for various adventures. For this, I carried a 6mm 30m static line, wish we brought a 60m 6mm but that definitely would've added to the uphill battle. But my three main ropes are the 30m 6mm static, a 60m 6mm Mammut Rap Line and a Mammut 60m 7.7mm Dry Half-Rope if there is any sort of leading and protection involved.

What gear do you use? I was looking at a G3 ZED for a touring binding but I want to get into the out of bounds steep and hard stuff + cliffs. Can that tech binding handle that or which tech bindings can?
I think Cody has 3 sets of skis with him, but he skis the Salomon Shifts (pin on uphill, full alpine on downhill). You might want something burlier than the Zeds if you're dropping cliffs.
