The sun coming up at the very end reflects the poignancy of the ending. They have been through hell and back, they are damaged and broken, but now that the truth is out there might be actual hope for them
Albee quoted Beckett (I think) and said something like “I wouldn’t be a playwright if I wasn’t an optimist,” or something like that. There’s hope for them. It’s tragic what they’ve been through, but the light of day and truth is on them. They can heal now.
The final scene in the movie really are sad and the music matches out perfectly and great directed by Mike Nicholls. Taylor said, years after the making of this movie (and after Burtons early death in ´84) that it was extremely hard to see this film and once again be reminded of this time. They really show what real acting is about. Every time I watch this film I feel the same way about the ending, the final scene, good acting, but a very sad and touching scene. A feeling of melancholy about it, very sad.
@@swengeer Great thinking, since it´s a sentimental movie. The ending is very sentimental and emotional, then you have to include that with sentimental music, that´s the whole point. Those two have an issue for the movie and it´s credibility.
Am I the only one who thinks him spoiling the story (of their son) ends the relationship ... I just don't know, the ending seems hopeful , but the toxic relationship seems dead now

The son was a story they made up together to ease the pain of never being able to have children. Now the fantasy game is over and they have to wake up, thus this scene is at sunrise.
@@KSRawlz afterwards when George was asking whether he was a stud or a houseboy and Martha eventually said he’s a stud, it seemed to imply that they did in fact. Perhaps I read it wrong or it was meant to be a bit ambiguous
The m;usic is so perfect for this moment of final peace and tentative reconciliation - George and Martha sad sad sad.

Some couples that fight really love each other. Some couples that never fight don't.
An unforgettably haunting and eloquent scene.
Very true. My eyes well up everytime.

Edward Albee hated the ending music. He thought it was sentimental.

@@swengeer I agree. I find the music jarring.
This film, this play, is the epitome of what the blues is all about...especially this ending.
I love this film so much, and the soundtrack is just perfection.
A Moment of Hope that each One have seen this movie can't forget.
Great movie, but exhausting to watch. Emotional Rollercoaster. Toward the end i felt tired and hung over lol
Have you seen the hilarious parody that Benny hill did??You must!!
Dude just put spaces after your punctuation, it’s not hard
Perhaps you should chill out a little? Bigger things happening!!
I liked American Dad’s take
I watched this movie last year and the only thought on my mind was “What the fuck” for 2 straight minutes.
Such a somber and butiful ending both are demons yet near the end become angels again

I always figured she just wanted to hurt George. Whatever happened, Martha was definitely unhappy about it!
