Un couple de quadragénaires se déchire sous les yeux d'un jeune couple. Martha, la cinquantaine, fille du grand patron de l'université, d'une beauté altérée et d'un tempérament parfois violent est mariée depuis plus de vingt ans à George, professeur d'histoire, plus jeune, d'une intelligence redoutable et inquiétante. À la suite d'une réception donnée par le père de Martha, Nick, jeune professeur de biologie,opportuniste, est venu prendre un verre avec sa jeune épouse Honey. Une scène de ménage d'une sourde violence éclate entre George et Martha : Ce moment de déballage délirant de vérités et de mensonges entre les vieux époux qui va bouleverser surtout le jeune couple.

The greatest scene in both the movie and the play. It is here that you realize that after all the debauchery and vileness, George and Martha truly love one another. This is the tragedy

@@joshgordon8369 Maybe. I just felt like they cared for each other immensely as companions and they were trying to force a relationship out of that. The way I read the son reveal was that their love alone was not enough to hold their relationship together in a positive way so they needed something more that never came. It's like when a couple decides to have a child to try and save the marriage but it never works. If they were truly in love that should be enough to make their relationship not break down and deteriorate.

Actually I agree - they "love" each other on their terms of what love is. To them, the toxicity and mutual delusion equal love. It's the great tragedy and ultimate truth of the piece.
