Not sure if he mentions it, if you put the LED bulb in and some of them are not turning on, you need to take the bulb back out, rotate it 180, and plug it back in. They are orientation dependent.
You are correct. They are polarity sensitive. I also have a video of a TJ we did this as well: th-cam.com/video/HHgEuB5lUMo/w-d-xo.html . In the TJ vid you can see where we had to rotate the LEDs for proper polarity for them to work. Thanks for leaving some great advice for the viewers! Have a great day!!
GREAT INFORMATIONAL VIDEO!!! Seriously. I am a first time Jeep owner. I bought my 87 YJ about 7 months ago. I have no experience working on vehicles but your videos make me feel totally confident. Thank you so much. This will be my project next week. :)
Thanks, very happy that the vids help you!! You bought an easy ride to work on. For the most part, they are fairly simple as to how they are built. Good luck with the LED swap. One thing to note that I think I forgot to mention in the video. LEDs are polarity sensitive. The LEDs have a right way and a wrong way to go in. They will plug in either direction but only work one way. If one of your LEDs don't work, pull it out and turn it 180 degrees and plug it back in. Here is a video where we did a Wrangler TJ, we had to turn a couple of the LEDs to make them work: th-cam.com/video/HHgEuB5lUMo/w-d-xo.html . Good luck! Thanks for taking the time to leave a great comment! Have a great day!!
nice job! they did look a little dim as did mine after i changed it. but, i have a remedy that worked for mine. the inside black metal bezel covers so much light that i drilled a pair of small holes (about 1/8") in between each gauge so the light can emit. works like a charm and the leds are super bright. also, i painted that black bezel white and it changed the whole look of the cluster
Great video! You sped up my dash-disassembly process by quite a bit! One thing I would recommend is to not keep the non-dimming bulbs, or get rid of the dimming switch and put them on a normal switch. Non-dimming bulbs on a dimmer tend to buzz, flicker, or fail prematurely. I plan on ordering bulbs for mine right now!
Thanks. glad you like the video! I've got some white gauge over lays. I'll be changing to different LEDs when I do that. Hope your project goes well! Thanks for checking out the video and taking the time to leave a great comment! Have a great day!
Did the exact same on my 87 YJ! This is a major improvement over the stock bulbs. The only thing I did different was when doing the speedometer. Instead of trying to snake my fingers behind I just laid upside down in my seat and worked from the bottom. Easy method, just my opinion. I wish I would've seen this video for everything else though. Would've gotten done quicker!
YES >>> HUGE improvement over stock bulbs! You're probably right now that I think about it. That speedometer was a pain, it probably was easier to work from the bottom. Gonna go my buddies TJ sometime soon. Thanks for taking the time to drop a line! Have a great day my fellow Jeeper!
Polarity matters. Replaced my lights with red LED and about half worked. Pulled the bulbs out that were not working, twisted them 180 degrees, reinstalled and they worked. Turn on your lights and test them before putting the instrument panel back in.
Sweet!! Glad I can help you out!! You are welcome and glad you are liking the videos! Thanks for taking the time to leave an awesome comment! Have a great day!
Great video. I just swapped the bulbs in my YJ, your video gave me enough info. I also refereed to your other video about the gas gauge not working. Gas gauge works now. Thanks!
chuck, i did the same install on my 89 yj after watching your vid. when u tested it at night, it still looked dim. i added another diy step that u should try if u havent already. before reinstalling the metal plate back on (the black plate that is under the clear lens), drill 2 holes each for the four "vertical pillars" for a total of 8 holes. it will open up way more lightning to protrude. its friggin bright
think I need to do this to my yj my tach doesn't light up and some of my other ones barely light up . that and thanks for pointing out the other little bulbs and how to change them as well have a few that need changing there as well
In a couple of weeks I'll be installing a white face face kit. Plus trying a different set of LEDs hoping to be a bit brighter than the ones in this video. So, hang tight and let me get the new stuff installed, They may be better LEDs and I will leave the part number on my website for you to order from. Glad you like the video and thanks for taking the time to leave a great comment! Have a great day!
Its all good bro!! I found out they are pressed on and can be a pain to get off but it can be done. Ill let ya know how it goes when I do it in a couple weeks.
Great video. I'll be sure to do that. Love the 20 mm round for the 4x4 shifter. AMMO troop by chance? I will have to do that too and I have some dummy Grenades that could work for the gear shifter. Nice job!
Thanks, glad you like the video! Nope, I didn't do any military. I was too busy with fast cars and girls in my younger years. I should have though. I have 2 sons in the AirForce, they are doing great now. I was rummaging through an army surplus store for some shifter knob ideas. Found that and ran with it. Here is the video where I tapped it: th-cam.com/video/L4alBv3Cxgk/w-d-xo.html . I've got a cartoon looking skull for the shifter at the moment. I've for a set of pistons and wrist pins out of a motorcycle engine that I may drill and tap to replace the skull. Thanks for dropping in and leaving a great comment! Have a great day!
Hi love your videos. Super helpful. All the dash lights on my jeeps aren’t working. Bought new LED lights. Did everything in your video but they still aren’t turning on. The gauges work. So it is getting power. I notice one of the plastic things that hold the light in the hole is missing. Would that cause them all not to work or is there possibly a fuse somewhere just for the dash lights? I haven’t tried changing the lights in the tax or speedometer. I’m going to try and take them out again and switch them around again. Any information would be great
Thanks, glad you like the video. I didnt even try on the speedo or tach to be honest with you. They could use a cleaning, thats for sure! Thanks for dropping in and thanks for the cool comment!! Have a great day!
Hello, I found your video very very helpful, especially for the turn signal, shift indicator lights, but I was curious if you know how to change the heater core panel light bulb and which number bulb? Also, I was curious if you know whether or not the blue coating is required for the heater core panel light bulb as well!?
Enjoyed the video, very helpful! I have an 87 YJ and the leds look great. You said you thought the instrument cluster bulbs were #74.....would that size be correct for my year? I cant find a bulb size chart anywhere. Thanks in advance
I went back to watch your video on LED dash lights and was wondering if by now you found or herd of a very bright (blue) LED set that’s dimmable? I put mine in before anyone had a video on this and there not bright enough. Thanks
Hello and thank you for all your advice. I recently became the proud owner of a 94 YJ. A little over a year now and it has become a hobby. When I need to see how something is done I look for your videos. I really like this jeep, but I wish it was a straight 6, instead it’s a 4cyl. Didn’t really think to much about that at the time of purchase. But for 3500, I couldn’t let it go. Do you have any opinions for boost motor performance? I have been long over due releasing videos. Hopefully I can keep this rolling now! Thanks hanging in there for me! I added a link in the description above as to where I got my bulbs. Thanks again and have a great day!!
Great video. I did as you suggested, but I can't get the speedo cable off the speedo? Also not enough room to pull the speedo out with cable on to get to the back of the speedo to remove the cable?
Glad you like the video! Some people have been able to change the bulbs by going under the dash without pulling the speedometer. Give that a try. Have a great day!
Hello again. Maybe you can give me some advice concerning gauges. All of my gauges worked great in my 94 YJ. I replaced all the bulbs with LED’s. But I took the gauge cluster apart to clean it. Put it back together and the temp gauge was acting up, wouldn’t read correctly. Needle was off. So I know that I bumped it and it is delicate. So I bought a new gauge. Installed it and it’s worse. I put power to it and it totally pegged out. So I put the old gauge in. It’s reading about 120 operate temp. It’s just the gauge but why the issue with the new gauge pegging out. Do they get calibrated some how?
With the tac and speedometer having the pos and negative wires on them and not the circuit board, how did you replace those? Did you just pull the stock bulb out the plastic shell and put the aftermarket led in?
Thanks! Here is a link back to my site that has an Amazon search link. I couldn't make a specific link to my red LEDs simply because someone might want a different color. Heres the link: www.fixjeeps.com/Jeep-Wrangler-YJ-LED-Dash-lights.html . Thanks for dropping in!
Just did the LED switch on my 1995 Jeep YJ dash lights over the weekend, they look awesome! One problem i have since encountered is my right turn signal won't blink only when my headlamps are on. Left works both with the head lamps on and off and the right works only when the lamps are off. Went to the auto parts store and the guy at the counter thought that because the LEDs take much less power that i was getting an over powered current to the turn signal thus over riding the blinking cycle. Anyone else have this issue, if so how did you resolve it....Thanks
I've been having the exact same problem before and after I switched the bulbs. If you've found a solution please tell me because I couldn't find anything on one signal not working with the lamps on anywhere
I've never heard of that happening. You may need to swap the flasher module for an electronic one that's compatible with LEDs. LEDs require LOTS less current than standard bulbs. So the less of a load doesn't trigger the old school "magnetic style" flasher module/relay in your fuse box. The electronic versions do not depend on how much resistance/load is on a circuit. In short ... try installing an electronic flasher module.
Hey random question completely off topic I can't seem to find anything about it anywhere for some odd reason my vent Controls when I bought this YJ they're all backwards like vent is off and off is Vent hot is cold and cold is hot do you have any food Lucian's to why that is or how I could just upgrade or eliminate that all together just stopped until I could try to figure this out
Either 12 or 14 total. I say that because I dont remember how many is in the heater control. As far as all the gauges, there is 10 total. Here is the link to the site: www.fixjeeps.com/Jeep-Wrangler-YJ-LED-Dash-lights.html

I tried going under the dash, can't fit my hand in. How do you get the speedo cable off. I tried squeezing the end of the cable, but still won't come off???
That video was a few years ago. I need to replace most of the LEDs now due to them not working at all. I have the LEDs and I am also going to do the white gauge conversion at the same time.
How many bulbs do I need in total? Also what do you think about autometer gauges? I thought about swapping out my gauges for them. Plus my temp gauge isn't working in my 94 YJ.
Either 12 or 14 total. I say that because I dont remember how many is in the heater control. As far as all the gauges, there is 10 total. Here is the link to the site: www.fixjeeps.com/Jeep-Wrangler-YJ-LED-Dash-lights.html > Im eventually gonna go aftermarket gauges. Just not in the budget at the moment. I have Autometer in my Mustang, I like 'em!
I recently bought a fully restored 91 YJ and gave my best friend my old 92 YJ but I never really wanted to upgrade the dash until now, The LEDs that you recommended just came in but I also found white layovers for the gauges but unless the Tach and Speedo come apart easily (or should i say without alot of trouble) I dont really want to get them. The layovers are simple to install as long as I can get the lens covers off. Have you ever opened up the front of either the Tach or Speedo and is it simple or a pain in the rear?
Ya know .. I have a set of the gauge layovers and a new set of LEDs. I still havent installed them. So, I really don't know how hard the lens come off. Sorry, I wasnt much help on that one.
It's a 20mm dummy round. It was never a live round. I got it at a military surplus. On my channel I have a video where I drill and tapped the threads. I'm on my phone or I'd drop the link in. Have a great day!!
I have seen them at an auto parts store. But you will pay at least twice as much for them. There is a link on my page that takes you to a search on Amazon. Just sort out the color you want and best review ratings. www.fixjeeps.com/Jeep-Wrangler-YJ-LED-Dash-lights.html . Hope this helps.
If you are talking about the wire tracing on the back of the cluster. Only place I've ever seen them is ebay. I don't know of anyone making new replacements.
All of the dash lights in my 95 have been replaced with LEDs, and they've been working great, BUT they have recently begun flickering, even while the vehicle is stationary. I know they aren't loose or bumped out of place, and I have tried finding answers to my situation, but those are hard to come by. Could this be a problem with the connectors or anything simple? If anyone knows or has had similar issues that have been fixed, please reply! The flickering is very bothersome while driving at night.
Most of the YJs should be similar. I wished my gauge faces would allow light to shine through them instead of around the metal faces. Contemplating getting a new set of gauges for my Mustang, putting the Autometer Phantoms out of the Mustang into the Jeep making a custom dash while I'm at it.
My dad has done custom fiberglass designs since I was really young. Of course growing up around it, I picked up many tricks and skills also. I just haven't yet sketched out any ideas as to what I would like to do.
Got them at Amazon. The bulb number is 194. Here is a link to a 194 LED bulb search on Amazon. Once you get into there just find the color and quantity you wanna buy. amzn.to/2n8dKvL Thanks for checking out the video. Have a great day!

Sorry, I wasnt much help on that one.
where did you get your 50 cal shifter knob or do you have a video on how you did it.
It's a 20mm dummy round. It was never a live round. I got it at a military surplus. On my channel I have a video where I drill and tapped the threads. I'm on my phone or I'd drop the link in. Have a great day!!
Thank you for getting back to meI will look for that video.@@Poweraddicts
can I get the L.e.d upgrade at any parts house? or are they a special order from a website?
I have seen them at an auto parts store. But you will pay at least twice as much for them. There is a link on my page that takes you to a search on Amazon. Just sort out the color you want and best review ratings. www.fixjeeps.com/Jeep-Wrangler-YJ-LED-Dash-lights.html . Hope this helps.
I got mine on ebay

what is the size of bulbs under the indicator lights and the "Park N D 2 L" light?
I have no idea. Mine is a manual 5-speed so I dont have that light. Do a Google search see what comes up. Have a great day!

If you are talking about the wire tracing on the back of the cluster. Only place I've ever seen them is ebay. I don't know of anyone making new replacements.

Hey! Thanks for the video. I completed the swap on my 91 in a little over an hour. The speeod was a bitch but I got it.
No doubt .. that speedo was no fun! You're welcome and glad the video helped! Thanks for taking the time to leave a great comment! Have a great day!
You bought the non dimming type. The flicker and fail prematurely. You'll have to replace with dim able LEDs or take out dimmer switch.
@@trinkladd Didn't even think about that; I'll check into getting dimming LEDs then. Thank you :)
what year is your jeep
Its a '91
i have a 92 wrangler. a little different but the same concept
Most of the YJs should be similar. I wished my gauge faces would allow light to shine through them instead of around the metal faces. Contemplating getting a new set of gauges for my Mustang, putting the Autometer Phantoms out of the Mustang into the Jeep making a custom dash while I'm at it.
+Power Addicts - FixJeeps.com - Jeep, car and motorcycle tips ..... nice make sure you make a vid. i always wanted to do something like that.
My dad has done custom fiberglass designs since I was really young. Of course growing up around it, I picked up many tricks and skills also. I just haven't yet sketched out any ideas as to what I would like to do.
Great video!
Thanks for creating it. I'm going to sub. Keep those YJ videos coming
You're welcome! Thanks for the sub! Thanks for taking the time to leave a great comment! Have a great day!
Where do you order these?

Thanks for checking out the video. Have a great day!
✅
Thank you!
What's a smidgen hehe
Means just a little bit :-)
I relate to the beginning so much not lights😂
It's different if you have a heater
Both of YJs have heat. It's the same procedure for both of them.
@@Poweraddicts ok thanks
Next thing you know you will be saying it's all cattywompus and saying things like you are tougher then Woodpecker Lips
Actually I've used cattywompus many times in the vids 😀😀😀😺😺😺
@@Poweraddicts well Hillbilly just subscribed to your channel. I have a 1989 YJ frame is rust free but someone hacked the wiring harness up. Why do people do that. Anyway I'm starting a Powder Coating Business and a TH-cam channel as well. You will have to check out my Jeep the before of course the after is yet to come lol
