- Comprehensive review, unboxing, size comparison and first look at the NEW Van Staal VR50. While the entire VR series has been a huge hit, the line (and the entire Van Staal lineup) was lacking a light tackle option to complement today's super light surf casting spinning rods. At under 9 oz, the VR50 finally delivers Van Staal's legendary rugged and waterproof package in a sub 4000 class reel. But is it worth the MSRP $500? Watch to find out if the sleek and sturdy VR50 is right for you.

That's one clean looking reel.
I wish I could afford that price tag. Great review thank you Ish.
That reel is beautiful... I just got the VR 125 and I love it. But that small size of the VR 50 is very enticing. I hope they make silver power knobs for them in the future.
The reel lost me at "just left handle retieve", but as always, excelent review Ish!

wonder reel or waste of money? if it's your dime it's up to you. for what i target, personally a few BGs and Avets will prob set me for life, but cheers to shiny things and the guys that really deserve these purdy machines.
Fishing on the beach is one of the harsh way to use a reel, and really i cant justify paying more then a few bucks on saltwater surf gear..now if your catching big game fish like tuna, yellowtail..etc...i can see spending the bucks on drags and things that wont blow up on you..but for an occasional striper or surf perch..no way.
yeah i have a super hard time thinking I need a reel at these price ranges. Great video as usual.
Unless you are a TRUE surf fisherman getting slammed by surf and sand, this reel is a waste of money!!!
That was a very professionally done vid.
thx man! new cam, new lighting, higher frame rate, lots more reviews to come.
So I have a question do I use to the hand right, because I’m saw all reel working to the left hand
Nice overview of the VR50, and yeah it's _gorgeous_ but at that price it starts competing against saving towards a new TV. One of these days I'll get to play with the VR series but for now the BGs and Stradics are going to have to hold me over. Nice new channel/account avatar btw!
thx P! imo, i'd go with 5 BGs for the price of one of these. i'm 'reelalistic' about my gear and a few BGs will probably serve me for life! but as long as they keep making shiny toys and you guys like watching my reviews, i'll keep the show and tells going.
I think having a good idea of what the range is for reel quality is valuable in and of itself, so please keep it up!
Could you make a video on van staal VR models bailess system install and reinstalling the bail back on. No video of that reinstalling back on youtube
Awesome video
kindly suggestion, just use a dollar
plumber's tape instead of baking mono, it is quick and it works.
That was great !!!!! Thanks
Mines came with a bailess kit. I got the all black one. Like 2 weeks old
Ishwithnofish, telling me to go to morethenfishing to see someone catching something lol. Funny guy
lol well i'm not going to fish with somebody's $500 reel ... especially if i'm losing his lures already haha
Dimana nak beli Mesin pancing VAN STAAL 150
You say in the video that vr 150 doesn't have a stainless shaft , the vr 150 shaft is stainless as are all of the vr series reels
How has it held up?
The VR50 is my first VanStaal. After 5 weeks of use the bail broke. Now it’s in the panhandle at Half Hitch waiting for VanStaal to ship the parts. When I spoke to VS they didn’t seem concerned. Another tackle shop just told me some people are having problems with the line spooling correctly. I’d wait until VS fixes the factory line in China before purchasing. Just saying. Tight Lines!
thx for the feedback👍
I'll stick with the alvey, but a very nice looking reel and awesome video presentation.
thx!
That Van Staal would make me Van Broke!
Would have to live in your Van... Stalled
Sweswio thanks bro!
This reel is awesome. I have other reels, shimano. Penn, and this one is the best one for the money. Money well spent.
What in the world is aircraft grade aluminum?
Thanks for the vid, would this reel be comparable to a 5000 Stradic?
id say the 4000 fk is the closest stradic to the vr50.
Ish With Fish appreciate the response. Crazy how small the 50 is.
Im about to buy a VR50 but do you think it will pair up good with a 9ft Bass Pro Ocean Master? Its Medium
15-30 lbs. 1 - 3 oz.
tbh 1-3oz is heavy for this reel. this reel is more .5-1.5oz 12-20lb line imo
Is it similar to the size of the penn conflict 4000? Can you do a comparison of this reel to a 4K
it’s the size of a 4000 I have one
I think this is the 5th time I've watched this video. I've fallen down the hole of eventuality.
it's a pretty little gem of a reel. tbh, not to throw a wrench in your plans, but i'd say half of the guys i know with this reel eventually turn it in for a vsx, either because the vr50 has a wobble issue or they've been bitten bad by the van staal bug and want to level up asap. i've only heard great things about the vsx, but dayum it's like 700-800 msrp. be warned!
@@ishwithfish, you are a crack dealer! A crack dealer I say. Now you've planted an ear worm that says, "If you're going to piss off your wife with a $450 dollar reel, you might as well piss her off with a $750 reel instead!". Bad Man! Bad!
LLLLove this reel any idea how much would it cost buddy? and thanks for the intro clip mate :)
thx man, I think MSRP 489 US
Ish With Fish yea mate found it at jandh tackle but shipping gonna be costly to Australia😁
Tsunami saltx maybe a game changer
yeah excited to get one in my hands!
it's a nice reel, but for the price i would go with shimano stradic ci4
sesgia You don’t understand the use of this reel. This reel is made for north eastern surf fishing where the real will likely get dunked multiple times during an outing. I own and have owned several stradics and there great inshore and jetty rods, but they won’t last a week in the surf.
Now FL but I agree with FK as well
Does this make a good fresh water reel?
well, its overkill for freshwater. does the same job a $100 reel can.
Will they make/do they make it right hand crank? If the don't or won't make it right hand crank that suck!!🤬🤬🤬this lefty wants a van staal
Awesome reel! Have have two both low serial numbers
Thinking of selling one of them
Team EVO Surf Casters if u r selling it still, shoot me an email. ken_muller@me.com
Will it swap to right hand reel
can’t swap the reel handle over if you want right handed gotta get the van staal vr 51 I just got one
Vr50 and vsx 150.. You think the vsx is worth the Xtra $250??
i'll say yes ... i know 2 guys that sold their vr50 for vsx and haven't looked back.
@@ishwithfish Thanks Ish! I was leaning towards the vs 150 and I truly value your opinion. Vsx150 it is. It's still light amd I need a light taken of a reel for my Phenix Bermuda 15-30lb and 2-6oz lure rated rod.. Thanks!
right on man. i have somebody willing to loan me their vsx, i hope to put some hours on it and see what it feels like against the vr's i've used in the past. if i get enough input i'll make a vsx vid for sure. gl with yours!
@@ishwithfish Yes please if you can put a VSX video out there. You put out AMAZING review videos and a VR vs VSX video from you would be legendary! Thanks!
Ish!!! Review the VSX!! What will it take? Should i start a petition? 😂 im almost done saving up for a VSX and would love to see a review from you before i buy it.
Sucks they’re backordered AGAIN” till August. I have mine considering selling it. $600
i bet people would pay that plus some! striper season is here and guys like shiny toys.
I've seen one sold for over $600! Glad I got mine!
Im from srilanka. Where can I get this?
look up your region's Van Staal dealer?
the most beautiful reel i eve seen... sadly..im not efforts its...
yeah, me either😭
Beautiful piece of fishing craftsmanship. But alas...I am a left hander.
A lefty that reels right handed?
@@wfdjmcgee125 Yes. Spinning reels are best used when you crank the handle with your weak side and hold the pole with your strong side. Van Staal doesn't make a model suited to left handed people.
@@ChiefToad i gotcha. I’m right handed and I’ve always swapped them to the right side. It just feels more natural. Especially with the hook set and working lures. Everybody does it different! I just like hearing other people’s opinions.
I want this for my kayak setup. But I also don’t want it just Incase I flip my kayak and lose it haha
for reals, that's my thought. seriously, a BG will catch 99% of the fish the VS can at 20% the price. buy who doesn't like shiny things!
Ish With Fish I have a c5000 Stradic fk. I guess it’s good enough
No tether?
I can tether it. I tried ordering one and it’s on backorder everywhere
Yep, i've been waiting 3 weeks. just found one and it's on its way to me now. only one in the shop though
Are this reels good ?
tbh as of today, i've heard this reel has some issues with reliability and balancing. i've heard better things with the tsunami salt x reel.
Ish With Fish thanks for the information stay safe 🙏🏻
@@fish_pro5521 same to you, take care👍🏼
How much
4-500 as of today🤑
My god!
right? i'm just glad i get to borrow high end stuff and check it out for a bit. bank account (aka wife) is happy!
150 has better protection than 50
Why do people use spinning left handed but over head right handed.
that's a great question, tbh i'm not sure. all my reels or left handed, conventional and spinning.
@@ishwithfish okay thanks for the reply
My spinning reels are left hand and my casting reels are right, dont know why but I like it like that
Naice
$500 for a Chinese-made Zebco with a reputation for slow customer service. Ridiculous.
For a little more money you can get an IRT reel made in Pennsylvania.
Hypertrophy 501 it is by far the best reel I’ve ever used. Can your tell get dunked under saltwater and be reeled then not cleaned?
What Van Staal Reels have the best line lay for long cast? Is it the X series? www.vanstaal.com/XSeries.htm
Why is this the most expensive of all of the VR series? It should be the cheapest FFS. I can buy the VR125 in the UK for £100 LESS than the VR50. That makes zero sense.
probably because of demand. when the black version comes out i bet the silver will drop.
500USD
The price JUST REDICULAS If I won the lottery wouldn't buy it !!!!!!!!!!!
You don't understand that some people fish in ways where their reel gets dunked in saltwater. I do and used to go through 3 or 4 reels in 2 years. At 150 or 260 per reel, I finally bought a Van Staal 250 VSB. It sealed even better than these VR models. I paid 800 dollars for it but was worth every penny. If you don't dunk your reels in saltwater, then yes the price is ridiculous.
You can get knock off van Staal from China now for 200. I think they just make them in the same factory.
wow really? got a link?
Don't Talk if not real.
no clutch no buy.
Dang second lol
That's a bad ass reel!!
dude, there's a free MTF Tourney spot on the line! chop chop!
Best spinning reel money can buy at the moment.
By far.
Only downside is "china" origin, which is more abstract than real issue in this case.
Comparing this thing with Daiwa BG or Stradic is like comparing bald eagle with turtles.
and isnt shimano out of china as well? lol or japan idk same with Daiwa?
Take saltiga exist or stella made in Japan and not cheap stradic ore BG and you will see 😀
Anyone I know that buys them ends up returning them in a month. For 500 bucks you can get a penn slammer a nice rod and a weeks worth of fishing tackle. Which one sounds more appealing
Not first!
dude, there's a free MTF Tourney spot on the line! chop chop!
Iphones are also made in china. I will never understand this made in China stereotype. It is all about QA.
looks great, too bad everything else about them is kinda crap
haha yeah i've heard mixed reviews so far.
Beautiful reel but made in China. That kills the deal for me
$500 😲no Thanks
Nice reel..but made in China..no for me..
I will not pay $500 for a reel made in China..
But people are known to pay $1000 for a phone made in China
@@kaikart123 Electronics vs Mechanics I guess.
If you look a lot of reels are made in China
Or Malaysian same place
I am not saying that I will not buy a reel that is made in China, because it is made in China, it is just that reels that are made in China are not good, they fail easily, some things made in China are not bad, its just the reels that do not cut it. I do not have a problem with Chinese made rod blanks, but Chinese made guides are not good. I have rods made in China that have lasted for a very long time, but I have replaced all the guides.
The vrs are shit my friend broke his on the first trip they’re putting cheaper material if your buying a van stal spend some money
i've heard that about the VR line when the first gen 150's came out. that's why i made sure to emphasize the Made In China label up front, give you guys honest info.
There’s no reason they should be that expensive if they’re made in china
Made in China and this high price???
For what?
It's a great reel, but I have al exists, saltigas, and when they are not made Japan I maybe pay 30% from the Japan made price. For made in China.
Premium reel made in China, I don't understand the logic. Why not made in USA
Its simple. VS did it purely for profit. Sell at high price and have it made cheaply in China
This will not work, premium reel buyers pay only for made in USA ore made in Japan but not made in China.
I want to buy that reel, but made in China in this price category is a big no go
But that's only what I think.
Honestly I've held a few In my hand and they feel cheap. The bail wire doesnt click and is kinda wobbly. And idc how light a plastic knob is I dont want it on a 500 dollar reel. I want quality components on all aspects of the reel. Basically it's a hyped up sealed reel made out of aluminum. The penn slammer 3500 is half the price and feels waayy better in my hands. Oh not to mention has more drag, metal handle, locking bail trip with a nice crisp click. Did I also mention its half the price and made with better comments? Ill go with a penn slammer over this thing all day everyday
Tell that to Apple
@@anthonyhiggins721 I've held them to but I didn't think it was that bad. I don't like bail trip on any reel esp a surf reel. It's a shitty feeling when you feel that trip hear the snap then watch a Duo or hydro popper fly past the breakers and out of sight. The line lay is better then it was, but Shimano and Diawa have VS beat. They feel kinda geary compared to a mid level Shimano or Diawa. The advantage is knowing that reel is going to work just as well after u use your rod as a wading staff to get to the best point on the jetty. If your not in the surf or in a yak you don't really need or want a VS.
I'm going to stay with my nigga pole
lol do you have an amazon link for that?
Unless you are a TRUE surf fisherman getting slammed by surf and sand, this reel is a waste of money!!!
Worth every penny. I have paired with my Daiwa, St. Croix, Okuma, even an Ugly Stick and it worked perfectly. Now I'm waiting for the St. Croix Legend so I could have the perfect combo.
Francisco Santiago how its the vr50 doin ? have the reel have any problem soo far ?
waste of money
made in bloody china!!????? so it rubbish!!!!
Welcome to Chinese down grade, no longer interested with van stall.
