Hey guy's I love the video and this is the first time I can't agree with you on the Denon s960h!!! I myself own this receiver and I think its great... although I don't have ps5 yet because I'm not a hard-core gamer I love watching movies this receiver does its Job. Denon does have the 2.1 hdmi box fix but for an mid teir entry level this receiver more than does its job.. not all of us can afford a $3,000 receiver. I think onkyo is dead in the water.. but I still love you guys and please don't take this the wrong way. I just wanted to make it clear for those of us who can't afford a crazy receiver but still want fantastic atmos experience get the denon over the onkyo.. P.S. even turned up passed 80 on the volume my denon s960h doesn't get hot.. I've tested this myself 😁
@@movie_av_impulse We all but acknowledge that not everyone has $3000 for a receiver in the video. As long as you are happy with your Denon, that's all that matters. But I disagree that Onkyo is "dead in the water".
Absolutely agree with the issue with Samsung. Heck, I sold my old TV because of that, bought a Sony TV and never looked back. In the meantime, I switched to NAD, but hat down to Onkyo, it worked flawlessly as long as it was our companion for movies, not so great with stereo music. Still would recommend Onkyo to whomever asks.
@@KristiWright first off my wife and I love your final thoughts/bonus content!!! 😁 but for me I've owned 2 onkyo receiver's back when 6.1 was a big deal for me they have always lacked in 2 departments... 1 being 2 channel (music listening) and low tone sounds like a pin dropped in the back channels.. I just feel onyko doesn't deliver on all ends but that's me! 🤷🏽♂️ and don't get me wrong I would love to have a receiver at $3,000 who wouldn't but my wife and kids come first.. believe me my fingers are crossed I win some tower speakers on this giveaway 😆. No matter how I feel about a review. you guys channel is my favorite among all of the reviewers out there I always posted your latest video on my Instagram.. already can't wait for the next surprise 🤗
@@zachariahadams I recommended an Onkyo AVR about a half dozen years ago.He ended up having to return it twice, then just gave out for good.I was embarrassed that I didn’t know how much Onkyo had deteriorated in stature.I’m glad to see them moving up.
In my opinion I had very good results with ONKYO receivers, I own two of them and I am very pleased with their performance considering I didn't spend my kids college savings. Very happy to know that ONKYO is still alive.
It was funny to see that they actually used those cheap flip flop speaker posts. I remember even as an uneducated kid that they were awful, just like the wire loop FM AM antennas. 😢
@Mark Ostendorf It will probably sell for much less though..like $399 These companies use these inflated MSRPs that dont reflect what the item will actually be selling for
This is my first foray into home theater, and I purchased the Onkyo 5100 as a result of Andrew's review. We had to manage our budget, and so ended up spending a lot more of it on speakers than we intended, but this receiver has worked smoothly for us after getting set up. It's absolutely convenient and been a wonderful improvement in our home theater experience paired with the Polk Reserve R200 and the smaller Polk center with the Atmos speakers. Thank you, Andrew and Kristi, for helping us use our budget well. Sincerely, the dedication you both have to making sure that even budget-conscious home theater buyers have a good experience is greatly appreciated.
With furnishings and equipment changes, I don’t know how you are cranking these videos out so fast? I love both of your reviews, it’s so exciting to watch something about sounds that you can’t hear or experience yourself. Both of you are magicians!!!!
I still have my TX-SR 706 Onkyo receiver which I bought in 2009. It has given me 12 years of reliable service and still going strong. Sure, it doesn't have bluetooth and some of the latest features, but it can decode Dts Hd master audio and Dolby true HD. I know Dolby Atmos is now standard on most receivers, but it's not bad for such an old receiver.
Huge Denon/Marantz fan here, been using them for nearly a decade. Recently I watched a movie at my friends with a 2016 onkyo(forgot the model, 7 channel 100w/2 ch driven) i immediately noticed how active the surrounds are vs my denon/Marantz (x4500h currently). The sound also had a snap/presence/liveliness to them(budget fluance SX). Sure it lacks individual eq for subs but the overall presentation was really impressive.
currently running a yamaha aventage 2080 140wx9 and previously had a 2010 onkyo txnr 708 110wx7. my onkyo was the same even over my new yamaha. i felt like i downgraded honestly. the yamaha has more features and tuning but the onkyo right out of the box just kicked harder
My old 5.1 system was an Onkyo A/V and the delight of spending a week getting the programing done with sound measurements still brings a smile to my face. Glad they are back as I have 19 years of memories of that system.
Love this! My first "system" was a Onkyo amp with 2 bookshelf speakers that I got from my uncle in the 90s when I was in middleschool. Used to listen to tapes until they stretched and warped on that thing. I saved up for a used Technics system with 2 tallboys AND A MULTI-CD PLAYER in highschool and then got a job in college to buy a Focal 5.1ch system later. Was an audio snob for years until I finally realized that I had fallen for the marketing and not the music.
Right on! Onkyo was fantastic stuff back in the day. I had an Integra P304 with a seperates, and their stuff plus Adcom were so well made. The Onkyo carousel cd players were also nice in that you could swap out CDs while one was playing. Lol I don't think you fell for the marketing. Back then Onkyo, JM Lab/Focal and etc was well made and great sounding boutique Hifi. Arguably the Marantz of the 70's but In the 90's. So when 5.1 started, the Recievers were over built because the manufacturers didn't know that the effect channels weren't going to be as demanding as the front 3 channels. Dennon had also built tanks that were RMS rated at their specs. Sony, Pioneer and etc were also good, but nothing like Onkyo or Dennon. Nakamichi was also a legendary brand. These were like the Godzillas of the Japanese car market (Supra, Celica, VR4, and RX-7) 🍻
Xbox Series X user here. Bought the TX NR5100 two weeks ago. I'm sad to say the the receiver could not pass through 4K 120 with HDR to my Samsung Q80T. It did pass through 4K 120 but no HDR. Upon further inspection of the PDF manual, it states the HDMI 2.1 port is capped at 24gps. I returned the receiver.
Yep, maxes out at 24gbps. I thought it would still handle 4K120 with HDR. The TX-NR7100 has three 40gbps inputs though out of the 6 at the back. The rest are 24gbps.
Andrew & Kristi, I always enjoyed the Onkyo sound, and my very first 2 channel system was an entry level Onkyo receiver and tape deck back in 1982. I had a few others including an Integra TX-890 that was a beast. What I would like to see Onkyo do is real, high quality 2 channel components like they used to do, along with the home theater gear. I guess that's where the money is, but there are still a few of us that keep separate systems for things. Great review. Keep it up.
My setup is an Onkyo TX-NR818, its still a wonderful receiver after so many years. I just love Onkyo. Then i have an Marantz Na 6006 connected to it. LG C9 65”, Panasonic DP-UB820, Playstation 5, Switch and Xbox series X and new Apple TV 4k. This a great setup for entertaiment. I have a 4k hdmi splitter to my tv so i can still get 4K and HDR even if TX-NR818 dont have 4k
Using a TX-NR809 in my bedroom setup (HDMI recall repaired a few years back only issue) and still sounds as great as it did brand new in 2011. Have had Onkyo products in one form or another since 1988 and have nothing bad to say about any of them.
Binding posts have been revised. Onkyo was listening and made the change. Just got this a week ago. Happy with it. BTW the Klipsch RP 600 MII speakers work great with this receiver.
Those binding posts are strangely nostalgic... They instill fear. I was always afraid of shorting my amplifier lolol. Good to hear BOTH of your inputs!!
Lol, I remember buying 16 gauge wiring for those flip flop speaker connectors and ending up with a sharp 24 gauge wire to thread and cram in. Lol Then shorting out the Reciever and triming the wire more, then I felt cheated, although that's how I learned to thread a needle and sew. 😉
A couple weeks ago I sat a message to Onkyo customer support asking about C-7030. I would like to buy one but it's out of stock. Then, they replied telling this situation is dued the current missing CI components suppliers all of the world and they planning to back it stock in the next spring (north hemisphere). It's wait and see.
It’s so awesome when a budget receiver makes you smile because it just does the job. Build quality aside, most of us just set the receiver up once and don’t touch it for years. A great option, especially knowing it handles HDMI bugs better than most. My LG eARC issues are making me mental! Great review today!
I love a good budget receiver, and the 5100 is a GOOD budget receiver! Especially after room EQ, it really does sound comparable to costlier receivers when watching movies. When listening to music you can detect the differences in SQ, but watching movies, it's possible to get really great sound for less!
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Good to know as my receiver is used for movies and music happens primarily on my in-ear monitors (Ultimate Ears) because my family got tired of Rush and Jacob Collier years ago. 🤣🤣
She totally nailed it! I love everything she said about this Onkyo. I agree that for 600 bucks there is no way it should have push terminals and plastic front panel and so so two channel performance. Those three features or quality's are normally reserved for receivers costing between 200 to 400 dollar range from most brands. I own 11 receivers from 300 to over 1000 and 2 are Onkyo. My nr509 from 2011-12 is more like a 500 dollar model than this new nr5100 and the nr509 was to be their big price per performance ticket in 2011-12 for 400 and it was great all around performance. Yes the 509 had their issues. In my knowledgeable opinionthe nr5100 is overpriced by two hundred bucks and is no more than a four hundred dollar receiver period.
great review Andrew, also great to see the other half being involved too even if it's just in an audible capacity, we're still using the TX-NR737 and loving it for the last 5 years there abouts. I think it'd be cool to have you both reviewing more often
Glad to see Onkyo still kicking. I have been an Onkyo fan since the 80s. Even had the dreaded bad HDMI model. Currently have the RZ line and would love to see the newer firmware trickle down to later models audessey update etc. At least to show Onkyo cares for there customers that where loyal through all there troubles.Just an idea. Love your channel long time viewer keep up the great work!
I have the RZ830 bought it at a great price from Amazon several years back, $600 it is a 9.2 120 watts two channel driven. It is a fantastic receiver and have been enjoying it ever since. I also have a Marantz 8012 in my actual home theater.. a much more powerful and far more expensive receiver. After experience both I most say Onkyo holds its own very well.
I'm lookin forward for the review of the 7100. In the PS5 note: I have never had any problem with mine since launch, I got lucky. To me it was worth it if for nothing else then the silence is amazing.
Same here EXCEPT I am beyond fed up with and pissed ONLY Sony can ( and does) build a gaming console with the TWO read USB ports to add an external USB Drive for our older games. BUT....it will & can ONLY SEE A SINGLE USB DRIVE! WTF? Why even bother at all then. Insane especially given thy already have a vastly TOO SMALL hard drive to begin with. Just so damned frustrating.
@@KristiWright 👍 I forgot to say that calm and honest reviews such as yours are a refreshing change from some of the bombastic ones to be found by shamelessly sponsored auto reviewers who shall remain nameless.
@@fonkenful We love watching the guys on Throttle House. Although their latest review of the Ferrari had me thinking "you guys hated this car but don't want to upset that Ferrari press relationship". It really sucks to feel like you are in a no-win situation like that.
@@KristiWright was never much of a performance car guy myself; been driving entry level Ford Ranger pickups for utility for 20 yrs. Now that I’m a retired old fart (70 this year), I’m needing the utility functionality less and less, and if I needed to replace it, I’d be sorely tempted to go BEV, so I’ve been watching Nikki at TEN along with a few others for the best part of the last year. Talk about Olympic gold medal FUD.
I've never bought a receiver for myself, but for my dad's 50th birthday some time ago, my mom and I chose to build a new home theater. We went with a brand new mid-range Onkyo and a full array of Polk speakers to replace an undersized pair of Klipsch bookshelf speakers and some tired components that will remain anonymous. The new Onkyo replaced an old Onkyo (pre .1 sub-out era) and ever since I've been dreaming of an Onkyo of my own. Only more recently has my living space and budget lined up to support that, and hearing that they have returned is VERY exciting.
Still rocking an Onkyo TX-NR616 from 2012. The sound is great. It has the older Audessey Room Correction software, but it does the job in my small 5.1 setup. I also experienced the dreaded power supply failure, but I was able to get it repaired through an after-market warranty. It's like new!
I can better you on that. I'm using a TX-SR606.. And rocking it as a 5.1 surround. Works fine as I don't play games. Will save for a 7.1 Atmos system soon.
Very informative review and discussion. I have been waiting to upgrade my 10 yo Integra prepro, which has become the bottle neck to the system because it can only pass through 2k. It’s performed flawlessly, a testament to the built quality that was the norm back then. The audio section and ease of use was why I got it then. I am very excited to hear that there is potential for a RZ-50 review, especially because of it incorporates Dirac Live. Unless they are coming out with a prepro, the RZ may be the center of my household entertainment. I want to support Onkyo and Yamaha to keep the Borg (Sound United) in check and competition is good for consumers. Good way to start Sunday morning. Thanks and have a good week.
Way to go Andrew and Kristi... another well rounded assessment... Most users won't wander too far into the outer fringes when playing movies or music so its good to knows the limitations of performance and/or building materials. I suspect if you'd have a condo you are less likely to venture into 100 dB territory vs your own stand alone house. I like that youse guyz include the comparables when assessing your various products... just like in real estate. It gives colour to you descriptions... Like a fine nutty Merlot, or whut-ever. ;) Happy reviewin'... G
Great review. I’ve been a supporter of Onkyo since my first Dolby Pro Logic receiver in 92 and glad to see they will go on. Hope you’re able to review the 7100, 6100 and RZ50 to see the improvements and performance. On a side note, the secondary commentary was spot on.
I had an Onkyo Integra receiver, TX-890, wood side panels circa 1988. Was solid as a rock 125wpc. 2 channel, one of the best receivers I ever had. Never ran out of steam. I miss it. Thanks for the review.
I've been using my Onkyo TX-NR575E for a little while now, it's gotten frequent firmware updates, and it's never failed. Atmos works great, very happy with it!
Glad to see your coverage of entry level gear, it seems to be all that I can squeeze the money out of the budget to purchase. Also noted Christy’s willingness to ‘call a spade a spade.’ We certainly know where she stands on certain items she mentions (I’m intentionally not naming the name she named). Her forthrightness is refreshing. :-)
I had the yamaha tsr 700(costco rx v6a model). I got the onkyo tx nr6050 and it works a lot better. I feel like the stereo performance might be a little worse but all of the HDMI 2.1 features work on the 6050 out of the box. Tested it with PS5 and Series X. VRR, ALLM, 4K 120hz, Dolby Vision, HDR10. Everything works.
@@MillionDollarFlipper for games the Onkyo is better. It does full RGB where the TSR 700 wouldn't. Besides for gaming, it's pretty much the same. Anytime you are using more than 28gbps bandwidth like with the xbox series x the onkyo will have a better picture. Even PS5 uses 32gbps.
I bought the Onkyo 696 in January when my old receiver died. I liked it for the first few hours I had it, very intuitive. Then I did a firmware update and that was all she wrote. I had the receiver hard wired straight into my router, and I have fiber. Gave me a connection error and made a brick of the unit as I could not get out of the loop. Turns out this was a known issue. Took it back to the store and got the Yamaha V6A and am so glad I did. I use this receiver just for my vinyl setup and some old ML motion 10’a and this thing never breaks a sweat. Plus I have done firmware updates without an issue with it nor my Marantz Sr5015. Never again will I get an Onkyo.
Hi just just subscribed to your channel and I really enjoy your reviews. ONKYO has been my go to brand since the early 90's currently my family and I have two set ups with the TX-RZ820 and the TX-RZ840 and we hope the brand will be around for our next upgrade.
Being an audiophile I loved Onkyo and Integra, mainly for the sound, had two Integras, one lasted fifteen years, the other two years, I have an Onkyo in the bedroom now, when I tried replacing it with another the new one it was dead out of the box, "amp diag" scrolling on the display for all channels, the instructions said there was a possibility of fire. So while I love Onkyo and the sound, I had to give them up. I didn't leave them, they left me.
I have an Onkyo TXNR757 driving a pair of Cornwall IVs. I bypassed the internal DAC of the receiver by using a Schiit Modius and going into the receiver via RCA input. I wasn't a huge believer in DACs before doing this. This is one of the few scenarios where I feel a DAC could make an audible difference that could even be discerned blindly.
I'm thrilled to see Onkyo back into the game. Aside from the push terminals for speakers, it appears their did their homework and produced a winner of an entry level A\V receiver. I look forward to their later models in this new line and as always, thank you for the excellent review!
In house here a Onkyo TX-SR501E receiver for radio and cd (cds, still use them sometimes 😁)… about 15 years old, used almost every day and still working 👌🏻
The first really good receiver I owned was an Onkyo back in the mid 80's. Then I bought a Harman Kardon receiver in the late 80's. Once the multi channel stuff started coming out I think both of those brands lost a lot of their original quality and appeal to me as an audiophile. Although I never thought of Onkyo as high end, it did offer a lot of bang for the buck. Kind of a budget audiophile brand. Today I'm more impressed by the smaller companies making quality 2 channel gear and not the big name brands of yesteryear.
Yeah the tech and licencing fees make this market the Gillette Razor of our time. Either way it's not as cheap as a Bic razor, but nonetheless it's not long lasting. Every year it's Dolby, DTS, or HDMi this or that. Unless you literally have disposable income for seperate q 3 year replacement of pre pros, which one will loose in resale, it's impossible to have the best if that's what you always want. Same goes for flat Panels. In reality it's marketing and an even larger market due to Covid and other factors. If you can stay happy with establishing a respectable high-performance Hometheater or Hi-fi system you'll do way better than just about any action packed Reciever or pre-pro. One just needs to "hold fast" in good sound and not features. Lol
So true! For many years it's been known that PS 4 and above were respectably reference pieces and way ahead of Flat panel tech mediums and Recievers capabilities for high performing BlueRay content. Up until the last 4 years or so this market was overlooked and as gaming has taken off it could nolonger be overlooked and even made it to where highend projectors have to keep up with console and highend integrated hometheater PC gaming systems When Oppo Blue-Ray players hit the market those really were the first that crossed over to the reference Hometheater and Audiophile markets.😀
I did own the NR-something😀747, first in HT and later 2ch music system. It did not perform very well for music, but when I used my speaker cables from my Hegel system, Onkyo proved to have musical qualities as well😱
I am glad they are back! - Been using their TXNR609 for a while now hooked up to a KEF speaker set-up Q500/200C/100 and a DALI E subwoofer. All HDMIs though are now connected to my Sony TV and the only ARC going to the Onkyo and it is still going great and loving it. My next move would be to find a better Stereo sound in my next receiver, but with many setting and hours of listening managed to get my stereo experience really nice fo the last few years :)
Thanks for the continued great content and reviews. With the hint dropped of a review coming on the new Onkyo RZ-50 can you shed any estimate of timing? I am very interested and the preorders have started but won’t move forward until I get yours and Kristi’s take. Keep up the great work!
If you go to Costco and get the TX-NR6050 Onkyo, It dose not have the push pin style speaker output! I used all my banana interconnects with this model compared to the NR5100!
I got this one upgrading from the SONY STRDH590. Love it! I’m not a power user like you, but for my living room’s 5.2.2 theater system with Sony Core speakers it works amazing. I connect my PS5 to my LG C9 OLED for gaming with no issues, and use the second output for my Epson LS300. I also really like that my LG recognizes the inputs within the input. So my “HDMI 2” shows up as “AV Receiver”, but there’s also extra options if you enable HDMI CEC and you’ll see your other components like “PS5” or “Shield TV Pro”.
Thank you Andrew, you just solved my lack of bass issue by showing how to adjust the crossover. I just got into HIFI and I have no jdea about this stuff, Thank you so much!
Hello, I really like your content and the atmosphere of interacting with fans. You are a blogger who is willing to tell the truth, unlike other reviewers. Hope your channel grows day by day!
*I HAVE NEWS ON the TX-NR5100!* *NEW VERSION, SAME MODEL!* I went to BestBuy to pick up one and noticed that there were two different styled boxes. One with an older looking "white" label and one with a fancy new, high resolution, "blue" lable. Same model number! It turns out, that the "blue" label is an updated version!!! In looking at the pictures on both boxes, it became clear what the "update" was! For those who don't already know, you'll be happy to find out that those tiny, spring-loaded speaker connections are GONE! Now, ALL speaker connections are the nice, "banana" plug type, like on the 6100 & 7100 models! I'm happy about that, so I bought it! Now, I just hope that our DVR+ (off-the-air recorder) passes 5.1 surround through the HDMI cable like it does through its optical output. 🤞🤞
Glad to see Onkyo is back. I’ve had a TX NR818 for a few years now and found it a big upgrade from the previous two Denons. Using it with a 65” D series Vizio, which as I’ve never been a gamer and mostly just stream TV and Netflix, Prime, Apple5V+ is quite sufficient for my needs and mid sized room. The only issue I have with the Onkyo is occasional audio dropouts on the HDMI ARC connection, but the system is so much more convenient to use with the remote supplied by cable provider ( Shaw BlueCurve) that I’ve been putting up with it until an attractive replacement candidate come along. If it turns out that the HDMI board issue is resolved I’d be looking for something with line level outputs, as one of my residual audiophile nervosa traits is the use of outboard amps for at least the main front row three as well as multiple subs. So maybe the new RZ series can offer something in that regard. Anyways, thanks again to both for the honest review, and belated happy birthday.
Kristi for the win at the end!! 👏 👏👏 Soundbar guy here waiting for the right time to get into the speaker game… The AVR reviews I watch closely as I’ll be starting with a 5.1.2 setup hoping to push it to 5.1.4…. Please keep them coming as well as those IG Q&A’s… Great work as always.
Future with Klipsh is bright LOL 🤪 Waiting for tec to be properly tested, is smart, and why I still have not upgraded from ps4 and xbox one. I am also waiting to see if there is any problems with the Yamaha Aventage A6A, before I upgrade my current setup (which is getting old, still sounds great, but no atmos etc). Great review as always A/K 🤘
I am happy to see Onkyo back in the game. Back in 2013 when I decided I wanted to re-assemble a dedicated 2-channel stereo system, the first thing I bought was an Onkyo C-7030 CD player. I still use it as a transport in a smaller less used system, but its value for money has been outstanding. When the laser finally goes on it I will be gutted. I also have an Onkyo TX-8220 receiver as part of a 2.1 AV set up which, while it will win no awards, was very affordable and just works. It is interesting but I never found the 8220 to be all that forward. I have paired it with my Heresy IVs and they sounded quite good together. I wonder if they voice the multi-channel AV receivers differently than the 2-channel....
They should have raised the price by 25 bucks and and used 5 way binding posts. I will not go back to old style speaker connections. 5 way binding posts are so much easier to work with.
The what Voxx does. They take over a company then use cheaper parts. Just like they did with Klipsch crossovers. They spend probably 6 bucks for the parts in the crossovers of their 2000 dollar speakers. It's a shame really.
I own an Onkyo NR393 and it is very very entry level but it does the a good job. I have a pair of Technics SB-T200's hooked up to the Front Channels, and a pair of Technics SB-LX30's hooked up to the rear channels with a Monitor Audio MRW10 subwoofer. I love this amp and so happy I bought it. For home cinema it really rocks as well as for my music ( I play it on 4 channel stereo). Playing Heavy Metal through this amp is an absolute joy.
Great review as always. Im glad they are back. They make good stuff. To be honest I was a little surprised that for that price it comes with those speaker pin connections. I guess everything these days has gone up. They used to be the most bang for the buck in terms of features and sound in my opinion.
I am running an Onkyo TX-NR757 from 2016.. I love it for home theater, so much fun, however the analog 2 channel is lacking as you I stated, Andrew. I paid 399 new - still a huge value. I have a Yamaha as1200 integrated for 2 channel, so I am set! The Onkyo doesn’t have pre outs so can’t use direct in on the Yammy. Just swapping bananas on mains for now. No biggie. Best to you and Kristi, Andrew. Great work.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Well it's a perfect teaser... I sold my Marantz. New Onkyo or Integra with Dirac or Yamaha RXA6A RXA8A is high on my list of possibilities. We enjoy the reviews. Keep up the good work!
Great video! Looking forward to seeing more reviews on higher-end Onkyo receivers. I'm currently waiting on the Yamaha Aventage RX-A8A (supposedly released in September). I'll remain open-minded to other brands. Not sure if Onkyo will have a direct competitor to the Yamaha, but I know you and Kristi will give your thoughts on the comparison. Keep up the great reviews!
I bought an Onkyo TX-SR705 ages ago! Still working touch wood! It's 7.1, though I have 5 speakers... L and right are MA RX2, Centre is ProAc, rear are Bose 301s! The bass is thumping! (L and R were ProAc floorstanders but my downstairs neighbour kept complaining so I swapped them with the RX2.) The ProAcs are in my living room now. No one can believe there isn't a Sub! The sound is MUCH better than the Yamaha model I heard at the time. It sounds amazing even today!! 😊❤️
"I'm tired of being your BETA tester." could be one of the most important sentences spoken, well done. I work for a huge company that literally deploys beta software out into the field to be used exclusively, with the idea that "We've spent a lot of money on this , so we're going to make it work." An absolute garbage way to do things. On to the Onkyo. It's good to see them surviving. I've owned several over the years, and they have always been feature rich for their price point. As long as they remain accurate on their power claims, (they have been "questionable" in the past.) I think anytime there is more competition in any one group, we all win. No banana connections for all speakers is, I would agree, unacceptable at this price point in 2021. Beyond that though, I think a good choice for someone who can't justify spending a ton of money on a receiver, and it's nice to see that the customer can still have viable options that perform well without breaking the bank. Always appreciate your and Kristi's insight and experiences. Thanks.
It’s a problem that is found across tech. I’m happy to be your beta tester but not once you’ve already sent the product out into the wild for review and con$umption.
Its nice to see someone with an analog watch, Not a huge fan of Onkyo but willing to give them a look and competition in the space only benifits the customer. also Kristy I emailed Paradigm explaining to them as a current paradigm owner how i would like to see your channel be able to review the new founder series and that you have a wide reach to potential customers as well as high production value...fyi
Are you going to test the 6100 when it is available too? I’m interested in this model because it has 40gbps hdmi 2.1 ports and no spring speaker terminals. I’m also interested if the stereo sound quality is better from this receiver.
Good move @Onkyo USA for getting Andrew/Kristi your upcoming TX-RZ50 with Dirac Live processing. It's a really clean design and on paper, looks to be a phenomenal receiver! I've pre-ordered one.
I connect all my inputs to the TV and pass through via optical to my receiver. Never had any issues this way, but I'm not doing 7.2, just old fashioned 5.1. I also got a ps5 at msrp. No issues, but mine is the digital edition so I'm not using it for Blu-ray, just games. Gaming on the ps5 is sweet and a nice upgrade in load times, textures and framerate from the ps4 pro. I also have a Sony, Yamaha and Denon receiver, and the Denon slaps. The Sony is trash. Yamaha sounds good but the features are frustrating. The Denon sounds good, but it's a tweakers paradise. The features took me awhile to figure out, but some of them like Restorer are amazing and I can't live without it. Happy listening from ATX. ✌️
Happy Sunday, everyone! I hope that you've all had a restful weekend. Thank you so much for tuning in. Quick PSA: Please get your 💉 if you haven't already! 🙏
I can't believe that the dreaded spring clip speaker terminals are fitted to a receiver in this price range. Onkyo don't have a great reputation for reliability, the hdmi boards often fail as do the power amp output transistors, mine failed after just 18 months of light use. There are better receivers to choose from.
I'm currently looking for a budget AVR and the Yamaha V6a was my first choice. I had the mantra in my head at the start of the video: is the Onkyo better than the V6a? Food for thought. I'm currently hoping to get a good deal on some preowned Klipsh RF-280FA's with a centre channel that I found. If I manage to get them, the AVR choice becomes paramount. Thank you both for your reviews.
Thank you Andrew for answering my question about home theater receivers playing in stereo. At the end of last year, I purchased the 5 channel Yamaha RZX-V4A because of your review of the 7 channel, no regrets. Love Onkyo but did not like the speaker binding posts, so I passed.
You know you're getting old when equipment you bought new becomes labeled "vintage". I still have the Onkyo Integra A8700 that I bought many years ago. It's not my primary amp, but still works and sounds good enough for my basement system.
big onkyo fan, looking to upgrade my 10 year old onkyo AV receiver prob next year to get 4k and atmos support etc... so looking forward to your next onkyo review already!
When you see the spring connectors, you know your bottom of the line is at its bottom. That's exactly why I buy this receiver. Perfection in price. Thank you, Onkyo!
Been happy with the Onkyo TX-NR609 driving my main system, even given the fact it need the HDMI board replacing (under warranty). Glad to see them back in the market - more choice is always a good thing.

5 way binding posts for anything over 600 is a must…. Anything else is a dealbreaker…. It cheapens the brand
It was funny to see that they actually used those cheap flip flop speaker posts. I remember even as an
uneducated kid that they were awful, just like the wire loop FM AM antennas. 😢
I would say anything over $50. There's really no excuse.
Agreed, it's not 2001
@Mark Ostendorf
It will probably sell for much less though..like $399
These companies use these inflated MSRPs that dont reflect what the item will actually be selling for
I would get the TX-NR696 over this, if you don't feel for some reason that you absolutely have to have the receiver support 4K/120Hz
We don't sleep much ;-). Appreciate you watching, Paul!
I’m still rocking my Onkyo TX-NR1030 upstairs, it was my first 4K & Dolby Atmos receiver. I can’t wait for the RZ50 later this fall
I've always been a fan of the Onkyo brand (and still have more than a few of their pieces). Very glad to see them carry on.
That's my same exact experience. I think they are very dynamic compared to Denon/Marantz.
Thank you for the great vid. - Owner of Onkyo TX-NR686 here 🙋♂️ and I’m loving it!👌
Yeah, the TX-NR686 is solid.
I am glad to see that Onkyo is still around. I have a C7030 CD player that I really like.
Snagged a 636 for $125 and I’ll never beat this value…. Check out the Onkyo receiver dyno’s by Williston labs on TH-cam
I paid 250 for my tx-nr686 the year it came out on Black Friday and that receiver fucking slaps. Especially for that price.
It's nice to see Onkyo is back i AM glad for that and i always had good impressions on Onkyos gear never had a problem with them
I have the RZ830 bought it at a great price from Amazon several years back, $600 it is a 9.2 120 watts two channel driven.

That's great to know. Thanks for sharing!
@@the.mystictraveller TX-SR707 here still. Sucks using optical from TV though as only Dolby Digital to the 5.1
Nice rewiev like always. Keep up the good work!
We "consumers and sound afficionados" are appreciating it!
Please review the 7100
Very informative review and discussion.
Like a fine nutty Merlot, or whut-ever. ;)
Happy reviewin'...

I'm currently running a 2.1 setup through my NR575E but lookign at expanding to a 5.1. How is the receiver handling your full atmos system?
Glad to see your coverage of entry level gear, it seems to be all that I can squeeze the money out of the budget to purchase. Also noted Christy’s willingness to ‘call a spade a spade.’ We certainly know where she stands on certain items she mentions (I’m intentionally not naming the name she named). Her forthrightness is refreshing. :-)
Thank you for watching! We have an entire "Budget" playlist on the main channel page if you are ever on the hunt for the more affordable.
How is the picture quality difference between the TSR-700 and the TX-NR6050?
Excellent review! Glad to see Onkyo back.
Been waiting for the RZ50 for about 3 months now. Big hype
Probably october
I’m using Onkyo TX RZ 900.
Toroidal Transformer. Linear Push Pull.
Built-in DAC 32bit.
@Jingle Nuts not everyone is perfect
Onkyo in the seventies and eighties made very good mid price cassette decks. Their receivers have always been good value. Hope they do well.
they had also high-end casette players/recorders but for some reason i find them very similar with kenwood cassette decks
Well done, especially Krisri’s gripe on the speaker connection. I saw those and paused, full stop
I'm thrilled to see Onkyo back into the game. Aside from the push terminals for speakers, it appears their did their homework and produced a winner of an entry level A\V receiver. I look forward to their later models in this new line and as always, thank you for the excellent review!
I like the back-and-forth with Kristi at the end of the reviews. Nice to get another perspective, and enjoy your interactions.
Would be good to see Onkyo back making great sounding overachieving, feature packed, yet beefy ,budget receivers again
I have owned 2 Onkyo receivers in the past and they both delivered the goods. Thanks for the review, Andrew.
In house here a Onkyo TX-SR501E receiver for radio and cd (cds, still use them sometimes 😁)… about 15 years old, used almost every day and still working 👌🏻
Mine too. Though switching to something newer to watch movies in multichannel formats on streaming platforms.
The new RZ50 looks very promising as well
I still have my analog Onkyo receiver and Celestion bookshelf speakers from my high school graduation. In 1983.
Lol
Great observation on the Gaming system. Everyone blaming the many receivers and not the gaming systems.
I still rock onkyo from the 90s. They rock!
7100 or above all day. Dirac live as well. If you can afford it, GET IT
I use this dedicated to a Ps3 and Ps5 console, No regrets, works just fine.
Glad I could help!

Hello, I really like your content and the atmosphere of interacting with fans. You are a blogger who is willing to tell the truth, unlike other reviewers. Hope your channel grows day by day!
I run the Onkyo TXNR 636 and it's a great little unit. In stereo it does lack bass but with a sub it makes up for it....
*I HAVE NEWS ON the TX-NR5100!* *NEW VERSION, SAME MODEL!*
I went to BestBuy to pick up one and noticed that there were two different styled boxes.
I've always had great luck with onkyo
Thank goodness the Pioneer VSX range never gave people many problems Had my 932 now a couple of months and its been flawless
Future with Klipsh is bright LOL 🤪
Waiting for tec to be properly tested, is smart, and why I still have not upgraded from ps4 and xbox one.
Happy Sunday Andrew & Kristi! Hope you're having a great weekend
Same to you!
Great review as always. Im glad they are back. They make good stuff. To be honest I was a little surprised that for that price it comes with those speaker pin connections. I guess everything these days has gone up. They used to be the most bang for the buck in terms of features and sound in my opinion.
Push-pin connections should be outlawed.
Great work.
I have a 20 year old onkyo receiver
Its great
Thank you for the Nugget on the RZ! Looking forward to that review!
Yeah, Kristi let that out. Wasn't expecting that.
You're welcome :)
Knock on wood, I've never had an Onkyo receiver/processor fail on me either. Not one time in 20 years of being one of their customers.
Still have my Grandparents 2001 Onkyo TX-DS676 for 3.0 and vinyl 2.0 listening.
They last 👍
👍🏽😊
Thanks for encouraging folx to get vaxxed. I’d really like to hear your feelings on what is so frustrating for you and Andrew re: PS5.
I would like to see a review on 6100 and 7100
I can't believe that the dreaded spring clip speaker terminals are fitted to a receiver
in this price range.
Onkyo don't have a great reputation for reliability, the hdmi boards often fail as do the
power amp output transistors, mine failed after just 18 months of light use.
Thank you for watching! Good luck finding your speakers.
pioneer bought it cheap for one reason or more, onkyo in my country doesn´t sell but in other european countries it´s gold
Great review, i agree push pin speaker connections have no use today it is so 1995.
Thank you Andrew for answering my question about home theater receivers playing in stereo. At the end of last year, I purchased the 5 channel Yamaha RZX-V4A because of your review of the 7 channel, no regrets. Love Onkyo but did not like the speaker binding posts, so I passed.
I’m champing at the bit for the RZ50 review.
