At the time, this was considered groundbreaking. Valve also made a robot model back in the day with a staggering number of animated bones (for the time). This was a stress test that was meant to crash the engine, but it didn't.
I really like those facts that such games were revolutionary. Even though I wasn't born in 90's, I still find it fascinating, even at 2023. After all, they were one of the people who made game industry from the scratch!
It was like 20 bones and 6000 polygons to show just how groundbreaking Half life was going to be. And if you know anything about the games reputation on launch, yeah it was truly ground breaking. It may be hard for you to believe but people used to use words like "photo realistic" when describing games like half life blowing the minds of people.

Video Games are actually produced differently to CGI effects. Video Games are designed to be rendered in real time, so games from the 90s (and possibly the 60s) had very primitive graphics that weren't very detailed. CGI, on the other hand, is designed to be rendered over a long period of time into a video file, so CGI films from the 90s can include more complex things without any detriment to performance. Visual effects back in the 60s were more practical, but even then I'd be hard to replicate the moon landing footage accurately with the materials and visual tricks they had at the time.

I was absolutely *blown away* when I first launched up The Lab and was in this crazy sphere surrounded by copious amounts of valves. There's even one you can manipulate with your hands.
I think the Alyx one easily takes the cake for most unsettling. Sure, the Portal 2 logo has him look back for a second, but he turns his head back around. But the Alyx logo? The head turn is almost impossible to notice at first due to it being incredibly slow and subtle, but the fact that it continues until the screen fades to black is _infinitely_ more terrifying to me.

Of course there probably is documentation and someone at Valve probably knows who it was but at the very least that info is not public.

back in 2014 the intro made me quit portal 2 immediately since i thought the valve guy would get me
I think the Alyx one easily takes the cake for most unsettling. Sure, the Portal 2 logo has him look back for a second, but he turns his head back around. But the Alyx logo? The head turn is almost impossible to notice at first due to it being incredibly slow and subtle, but the fact that it continues until the screen fades to black is _infinitely_ more terrifying to me.

To be honest, my favourite/ most terrifying of all are the second and third from the start, seeing that thing in his eye is legitematly terrifying. Especialy the third one, its so bright, high contrast, that valve is literally staring into your soul
