Metcalf was a top 5 return man of all-time and racked up more than 7900 yards from scrimmage. He retired top 10 all-time in all-purpose yards and was the all-time leader in PR TDs. He's the only one of the top 20 return men by yards in NFL history who has a 1000-yard season either rushing or receiving (his 104 Rec, 1100 Rec Yd season in 1995). In fact only Darren Sproles among that group even has a single season with 1000 scrimmage yds. Metcalf had 3. Sproles is also the only one of the top return men that can best Metcalf's 55 career TDs. Metcalf would definitely get my HOF vote.
All facts and this is not shot at Devin Hester but he gets in as essentially just a special teamer a great one for sure but his all purpose stats are greatly dwarfed by metcalf's if Hester can be a Hof essentially jus bein a return man then a guy like Metcalf who was comparable to Hester as a returner while being world's better as an every down player deserves a nod
It's an interesting debate. Not sure if you can put Metcalf ahead of some of the other guys waiting to get in. Also 53 fumbles is a lot. On the other hand, he went out and did it for a long time and was very exciting to watch. 55 TDs is legit.
@DM7817 Yeah, the fumbles are the one big negative when it comes to Metcalf. I also agree that he isn't the most deserving among players who aren't in yet. He's not even the top of the list among guys who were primarily kick/punt returners. I'd put Brian Mitchell in before Metcalf for instance. All that being said I still think he belongs in Canton.
@@donwhiteley3293If you have Hester as a deserving HOFer, then you cannot argue against Metcalf being a HOFer. People have regency bias when it comes to Hester, and I'm a die hard CANES FAN!
Eric Metcalf was a menace. No one could ever touch him as a return man. He was an incredible athlete is what made him versatility, he excelled as a wide receiver, running back, and return specialist. He was especially dangerous on special teams, where his speed and agility made him a constant threat to take it to the house.
Great video coverage Eric Metcalf was the first Ultra Back🏈 Cleveland didn't use Him correctly. He should've retired there. If Devin Hester is in the HOF. Metcalf should've been a shoe in.
He was seen as small at that time for professional football. They didn’t have all the rules that make the game so soft these days and they were worried about his durability. If it were now he be a huge star in NFL.
I’m a (long suffering) Jets fan for 40 years but I remember and fearing Metcalf when Jets played the Browns which seemed like every year despite them not being a divisional opponent. Helluva all around back & especially punt & kickoff returner
People often get this wrong he was a hell of a return man and receiver but as a running back he couldn't pick up yhe blitz or get tough yards inside and he took a lot of hits and back then they hit thats why when he left Cleveland he was switched exclusively to slot receiver
I personally have always believed Eric Metcalf should be in the Hall of Fame. One of the greatest players of the 90s and could beat you returning, receiving, or running back. That type of player is generational
I have a true story about Eric's father TERRY. First, I didn't know that Terry had problems after his NFL career. I am male, Japanese-American, born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. I used to be a referee for youth basketball, as was Terry. I believe Terry was also a kindergarten teacher in Seattle, in the 1990's. Ben, is the younger son of my parents' friends. Ben was a cocky arrogant trash-talker. I was watching Ben (16-17 year old boys) playing a basketball game, and Terry Metcalf was one of the referees. (I was spectating, not refereeing this game) On a fast break, Ben got thrown into the wall, but no foul was called. Terry blew his whistle and said, "My time out. Are you ok?" Ben said to Terry, "F--- you." Terry said "Technical! Ejected! Have a seat!" Ben said, "F--- you," and Terry said, 'Out of the gym!" Ben's team was all Caucasian, and the opposing team was all Asian. Terry told the team captain for Ben's team at one juncture, "I don't want to hear any more complaining from your team!" The captain asked Terry, "Is that a racist remark?" Terry said, "Technical!" I never wanted to referee boys over 13, because of guys like Ben. Terry always seemed to do games, with hot heads like Ben. I wanted to ask Ben, "Don't you know who Terry Metcalf is? Don't you know who is SON is?"
@@NoBullsh_t Because, there was mention about TERRY Metcalf, and I'm letting you all know, that I know Terry, personally. Doesn't it strike you as surprising, that Ben would say that kind of stuff to Terry, Eric's father? I wouldn't talk any trash to, say, if Travis Kelce's father was refereeing my basketball or softball game. I would "know who he is," and not complain at him.
@@NoBullsh_t No Bull, I actually have an answer, to the point of my story: Did Ben NOT know who he was cursing out? Did Ben NOT realize that the referee was Terry Metcalf, who had a solid NFL career, AND is the father of then-star Eric Metcalf? You're definitely younger than me (no way you're 51 like me). Imagine, Dell Curry lived in the same city as me. Dell refereed my basketball games, and umpired my softball games, in this scenario. Imagine, one of my teammates cursing out Dell Curry on the basketball court or softball field? I would pull my teammate aside, and say, "Don't you know who that is, that you're cursing out? That's Dell Curry, who had a very nice 15 year NBA career!" Not to mention, Steph Curry is an all-time great. Look Ben shouldn't curse out any referee, but I just find it more unbelievable, that he matter-of-factly cursed out Terry Metcalf, Eric's father. If the referee was Joe Schmoe, not Terry Metcalf, it wouldn't even be a story.
The Cardinals essentially got him for free. They weren’t taking Leaf anyway. I was at the game when they beat San Diego to make the playoffs. He struggled all year but when they needed it most…
This was a great video. Metcalf had a long, solid career. You are putting together better content with each video! I'd request a couple guys for future videos. One would be Mookie Blaylock. Another football player you should do - Curtis Conway.
True old school football fans haven't forgotten nothing his father played for the St Louis Cardinals and the Redskins I do believe is where he finished up his career at his name was Terry Metcalf
Metcalf is one of those versatile players who you could genuinely say was ahead of his time. His tenure in Cleveland was riddled with indecisiveness from coaching and scheming. A swift, sure-handed, elusive player who can make plays...Wide Receiver all day, especially considering Cleveland was so reliant on other featured backs. Just utilize him outside of the backfield!!!
*Cordarrelle Patterson* is this generation’s Eric Metcalf.
Rushing, receiving, kick returns… all around BALLERS!

Eric Metcalf was ahead of his time. True all purpose RB. Other backs like him were like Ronnie Harmon and Dexter Carter.
One of the best highlight reels of all time easily
The man deserves the HOF 💯

his college stats are really sorry. he didnt do much and the browns trading up to get him was wild tho
keep alternating between the BA and FL.....do Nick Collins

I loved watching him juke defenders while playing for the Browns.

Eric still the first metcalf for me
He was special wasnt he? Mr spectacular!!
Glenn Millburn 404 all purpose yards in a game history.
Hey can I ask you a couple of questions about creating football content?
17k yards was easy back then. Especially if you play for the browns and you get 25 kickoff returns a game
I was gonna say, is this the guy that got caught with fire crackers in his carry-on when flying to the pro bowl. It’s his son though. lol.
8 fumbles in 90 alone. Monday you know who going to be carrying a football ?
