in my opinion, when i watched the movie, i think that the stalker guy bought all the magazines of mima since he didn't want people to buy it and see the actress persona of her and he wanted to protect her identity of being a pure and innocent idol
I took it as him buying all of them so "no one else can have her but me". Stalkers have a warped idea that only they should be allowed to see the victim's body/the person being sexual is only "good" when the stalker says so. Publicly shaming the victim for being sexual and then enjoying their nudes in private is quite common amongst predators.
Which completely contradicts Ishida's wish. He slutshames Mima and buys all the magazine stock so nobody would see her in sexual way, yet he definitely used this material for his own sexual pleasure.
23:00 Everyone who criticizes the film completely misses the point of the ending. It's supposed to evoke the same feel of the ending of a low budget made for TV film of that era, just like the one Mima just wrapped. It's the same trick Kubrick pulled by putting "Singing in the Rain" at the end of A Clockwork Orange, it's meant to blur the lines between fiction and reality even more, and leave you questioning whether or not Mima's happy ending is even real.
i wasn’t expecting the psychological split but i did enjoy this anime very much because it made me question her reality. like if she was crazy and never famous, but to know the truth at the end was very telling.
I think the manager actually rented the room next to her and was speaking to her through the mirror further pushing her to her insanity and drugging her tea entering her room through the the balcony. The drugged tea explains her time skips. The way she sees herself in the mirror of the room and talks to herself is just as her when she’s interrogated by the police detective staring in the window as if she was talking to “herself” mimicking her constant chatting in her room to the mirror with the manager on the other side persuading her into insanity.
It's crazy just how ahead of its time Perfect Blue really was. Sure, those issues were already a thing back when it came out, but while DID of course could affect anyone, most people aren't famous idols. Nowadays though? You just gotta have a moderately successfull twitter account to be a potential victim of exactly the situation Mima is going through. Especially when you're a young and pretty woman. So this movie genuinely just got more unsettling over the years with how more and more relevant it has become
Got more relevant because more and more people wanted to be internet famous, be it a youtuber, a tik toker, instagram, etc. Generations have forgotten the idea of privacy and post far to much of their lives online. Not to say some parents didn't push it on them either, plenty did that.
The quality is too good for your sub and view counts, keep up the good work and the anime was crafted so well that it was so much more terrifying than a simplistic fnaf jumpscare because it is so relateable to the world we live in
My personal interpretation is that Mima doesn't have DID. since you cannot develop it past the age of about 7 or 8. She is more likely to be experiencing a psychotic break from stress making her delusional and dissociated. She may also have developed Depersonalization-derealization disorder, in which reality and her self are constantly dissociated. I would personally argue she has Depersonalization-derealization disorder with stress induced psychotic symptoms :) since she doesn't see herself as anyone but her, she just sees her idol persona and her current self as separate due to her stress and dissociation. there are many more dissociative disorders than DID after all but unfortunately most people, including film makers, do not know any other than DID
I didn't know about that man thanks for sharing, I was just going off what other people had said cause i'm not educated all that well on it. Cheers man :)
? I think my comment was deleted somehow? I can't view it under this thread So I'm recommenting again as someone with DID. Anyway I need to say that the theory that "DID can't develop past the age of 8 or 7" is false, and was popularized by a guy who got his medical license revoked. The theory in the rest of this comment is fine but it's important to correct that misinformation.
I still think the end is a twist, cause mima rarely looks at herself in the mirror, that was more of a rumi thing, also why was mima wearing the glasses... glasses that could hide your far apart eyes... also if u watch the scene where the supposed mima is talking to the doctor her face changes for a slight second and thats not something like mistake cause the movie is animated
Perfect Blue is the perfect movie. Right now I’m in my phase of forcing all my friends to watch it as I’m shocked so them of them haven’t seen it yet!!
My dad was an anime fan back in the 90s and he rented this i think? I was about 9 or so and i ended up watching it with him, which is a little fucked lol but I appreciate my dad letting me decide if i wanted to stop. It continues to be one of my favorite movies of all time.
Doesn't necessarily mean anything, but the whole "not being able to distinguish fiction from reality and intermixing the experience of working in fictional settings vs real life" is giving me heavy, heavy, HEAVY Inland Empire vibes (maybe my favorite movie), so this is DEFINITELY doing on my future watch list. Excellent video, man. (If you haven't seen Inland Empire, you should. I have a feeling you'd like it.) (Also, the whole "not being able to understand it" - thing is also something I've heard a lot from people online who have seen Inland Empire, but I think you'd do well, lol.)
The story is intentionally ambiguous so there isn’t exactly one answer but after watching this movie a few times I think the secret to understanding it is that the story actually takes place during two (maybe three) with the characters remembering what happened. Rumi has an exact copy of Mima’s room that she takes Mima to after the assault scene. She was probably drugged and is confused because she is in a place different yet familiar. This is why sometimes the fish are dead and sometimes they are alive. It’s the identifier of whether she is remembering her actual room or the copy. The other scenes are Rumi likely already in the mental hospital remembering different situations but projecting herself into the character of Mima. These are the scenes where her reflection becomes the idol because Rumi sees herself as the idol Mima and not the actress. It’s also an indicator of which scenes actually happen to Mima and not Rumi. The scenes where her reflection doesn’t transform are the scenes with the real Mima. It’s why she looks in the mirror at the end of the film. To show us she’s the real Mima and not the illusion. Finally, the film is also a meta commentary on parasocial relationship. The ending is left ambiguous because in reality these are all characters in a movie. Everything is so out of joint because we don’t actually so Mima’s perception of it. We just see a 3rd person view of who she is. The stalker and Rumi are stand ins for the viewer who watches the story and projects themself into it or the crazed fan who fantasizes about celebrities.
When I was writing the Personification of madness in my story, it was heavily inspired by Satoshi Kon. If not for perfect Blue and Paranoia Agent, I do not think said character would have been flushed out so well. In the end said character exist only as a figment of one's own mind, their own power and abilities driving them to insanity. This character Arachk who has toppled gods, was never really there to begin with.

Trust me, getting stalked is a legmit scary thing. Dealing with mental illness on your own while being stalked is scary. It's not just "fucked up and edgy" it's a realistic horror.
So it’s… scary..? I think you’re conflating what scary means at all. Psychological horror is still horror, it just doesn’t have a bunch of jumpscares thrown in to force you to panic. If you can acknowledge that it’s fucked up, surely you can see how that would mean it frightens most people.
@TimothyBell90 I feel like if this was a traditional horror movie with cheap sumpscared and fake blood you'd call it scary. The premise of a woman being stalked and then almost killed after being kidnapped is classis horror tropes put together.

Good analysis! I saw this movie back when it was released and both myself and the friend who saw it felt that the only issue we had with it was that we'd have been able to relate with it better if it had been live action rather than Manga. The Manga medium created an insurmountable disconnect with the characters. It didn't help that the artist wasn't the most realistic of their trade. My personal favourite Manga is probably Ghost in the Shell, which has phenomenal graphics, and I prefer it to its recent live action remake. But I don't think, even with more realistic graphics, it would have worked. Perfect Blue was very much of an experiment at the time, and it was hailed as the first Maga to embrace such a realistic topic. I don't know if the experiment succeeded, because I'm not a huge Manga fan and therefore not knowledgeable enough to know if anything similar was produced since then.
