    This is truly the best review I've seen so far on the C.O.P. Carried one on and off duty during my law enforcement service. Yes, a very long and hard trigger pull and heavy weight may be disadvantages, however this is made to be VERY up close and personal. Like pulling it out of your jacket or ankle holster when an assailant is on top of you. Trigger pull and accuracy matters little in some circumstances. Extremely reliable.

      At very close range... no slide to be pushed out of battery, no cylinder to be grasped and kept from rotating, no gap behind trigger to have finger shoved into , no way bullet unseating can block block cylinder rotation. Difficult to wrest away from grasp. Can be fired in contact with attacker.

      Robert Canon,
      Forgive my rebuttal on the COP but it was meant is all jocularity. That is why I made it a general observation. You have to admit it that it is a good description of the C.O.P.
      Do you still have yours? I still have mine and wouldn't sell them for a pot of gold. Well maybe one.
      LOL!

    I have one, purchased new a long time ago. All Stainless Steel and at the time proved very difficult to manufacture and commanded a high price which may have been part of the failure. I still carry mine as a backup when needed (actually still have a factory shoulder holster). Accuracy? Why worry at 5 yards or less which is pretty much the working range a .357 will get results. I have shot several hundred rounds through mine over the years just to keep the feel and pratice. Not an easy weapon to master but the design of the heavy trigger had a purpose: that being this pistol won't shoot without a concentrated effort on the part of the shooter which is the main reason for conceled carry. Very smooth exterior nothing to snag, hang, dray or result in an accidential discharge.
    The pistol has a rotating hammer which strike 4 firing pin "balls" in succession, the pistol was extremely well built and fitted.
    If anyone likes I would be happy to copy and email the owner's manual pages as needed.

    Pretty cool gun! I had one in the 80's and you're right about the very stiff trigger. I shot 38 +P in mine and it was a great up close and personal gun. Accuracy was not bad up to about 20 feet or so. It beats throwing rocks in a bad situation. Thanks for the video.

  • @RockandrollNegro

    I had one of these in the 80s, and from the ads in Shotgun News it looked a lot smaller than it actually was. It was well built, and reliable, but it was too heavy for what it was. Shooting it was not fun; the only other pistol that was as unpleasant to shoot as this one was one of the Cobray .45/.410 derringers. My job at the time required one duty revolver to be worn (with two speedloader clips on the belt; mine were made by Super Vel) and a backup pistol to be worn on an ankle or shoulder rig. I thought that this pistol would be my ankle backup, but I noticed after a couple of weeks that I was walking with a gait due to the weight of this thing. I ended up switching to a Raven .25 as a backup piece. It was lighter, easier to shoot and held more rounds than the COP.

    • @0neDoomedSpaceMarine
      @0neDoomedSpaceMarine 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A Raven MP25 would not have been my first choice, but it would obviously be way easier to ankle carry.

    American Derringer also produced them in the early 90's and they where also available in .22 rimfire magnum as well, which is a lot more convincing for a compact pepperbox but running 158 grain jacketed semi-wadcutters (yes, I'm that old :P ) out of the .357 would be pretty effective. Accuracy is poor but it's really meant as an up close and personal, last ditch weapon, not a range gun. :)

    7:25. I agree with your preferences. I also collect a lot of unconventional stuff. I would love to own one of these COP derringers one day too. Not for anything serious like concealed carry (though it could function in that role if it had to), but for use as a unique collectible conversation piece that could be a conversation starter at the local range.

    @robertlarson7870 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Actually mine shot very well, with .38 ammo - forget the .357 mag stuff! Absolutely reliable, it was pretty accurate at 10 feet or less. What more could you ask a tiny little handgun to do? But in truth my Colt Cobra was about the same size and a bit easier to handle. That plus one more round made it a better choice I guess. Still wish I had both, which I sold long ago.

    I bought one a few years back at a Florida pawnshop for $500 pretty mint with box and all. Shoots pretty well-more accurate then one might think (though kicks like a mule with .357) though trigger pull takes some getting used too. Best shot point style tightening grip while bringing online to target. Tends to print with each barrel in its corner and at 25 yards is real tough to keep all shots on target but manageable with practice (painful though). Wear gloves!

      The double action mechanism of the trigger rotates the hammer between each chamber.

    • @gordongrimes6773
      @gordongrimes6773 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      NukleOn is correct, the action is basically a rotating hammer enclosed in the back of this pistol. Said hammer strikes basically a "firing ball" (it looks more like a ball than a proper firing pin). The hammer hits each one then index's onto the next chamber. I had mine fire a pair of barrels ONCE! A small sliver of Stainless Steel caused one of those balls too press against the back of a round. The force of shooting/recoil caused a second discharge. I have never heard of this happenning to anyone else but with only a couple thousand manufactured there is not much feedback. That is the only problem I have ever had and a good cleaning after disassembly corrected the problem.
      FYI a pair of full house .357 mags going off together will really get your attention:)

    I bought one of these brand new when they came out, what a P.O.S. It must have a 20 lb trigger pull plus the pull is so long it takes forever to squeeze the trigger. The barrel is so short you can't hit anything over ten feet away. Because the barrels are all pointing from a different direction you can't put two shots in the same place. With .357 mag loads it is hard to hold on to because of the crappy hand, grip. I fired 4 rounds and got rid if it. Worst gun I even owned.

      My father knew the group of machinists in Torrance where we lived at the time that made these. I had one of the first ones they produced. The firing pin constantly broke and or malfunctioned. Trigger was ridiculous. Besides being a cool looking gun, it weighed a ton and was a piece of junk. Collectors bugged me for years to buy from me. I finally sold to a big dealer in the LA area. I would have never trusted this gun for personal protection. The production run of these was very small making them very collectible today.

    Great novelty gun, but horrible for anything other than display. I also have a "Downsizer" derringer (that must be super rare as I've never seen one anywhere) which is also good only for display. If nothing else, maybe the rarity of these guns make them good investments, but otherwise they're pure craptasticness.

    OH only 1 barrel shoots at a time! Well in that case I still don't want to shoot it lol. I can tell it doesn't feel good.

    if it shot all 4 barrels it would be at fine because it would be a volley gun not a machine gun
