It makes sense that he's in to story telling. I was thinking earlier about how I was roped into watching a 1 hour video about producing a purple gold ring and I came to the conclusion that his storytelling skills were so strong
He explains every video in a language everyone can understand, even takes time to explain the terminology he uses for certain chemical reactions. Also, he talked about how he has a whole technique to make his voice sound as monotonous as possible, and, imo, it makes people stay in the video and not feel like it became boring because he never spiked his tone in any moment, so you watch the whole thing to take out your conclusion/opinion on it and enjoy it.
Also, I'm more interested in watching the hour long videos, because I feel there is so many interesting things you learn about the common chemicals he uses and how drastically he pulls out of the acid something used for flavoring. Like wtf that's so cool
TH-cam needs to get the Laugh React button. "Liking" things is not descriptive enough. Like what if it made me angry but I didn't dislike the video/topic? Or maybe I'd rather react with a broken heart rather than a dislike. There is other emotions other than "like" "dislike" 😮
This is one of the better interviews Ive ever heard. The active listening and personal shares of the interviewer made this podcast go down paths that’s were way more philosophical than i would have expected. Nigel is one of my favorites. And I like him even more now. Subscribed
"Modern day alchemist" is a great way to describe Nigel, except it leaves out the random throwing of objects. But seriously, much respect to Nigel because he has the integrity to say, "... and I'm not sure why," when something unexpected happens.

The 'stopped on the way to the bathroom' anecdote at 1:08:20 was so funny to me - I ran into Nigel at an event once when he was very obviously in a hurry to the bathroom, so I limited the interaction to a quick wave at each other in passing. All good, dude! - I hope no one else stopped you on that journey 😂
I feel like what Nigel is getting at is the authenticity of the passion for the craft has to be there for him. He's very hands on - he needs to be directly involved in the process, and I admire that!
It sounds like what he likes more than anything is creative problem solving. He creates these really complex ideas and then wants to solve them. Him wanting to be an ER doctor makes perfect sense, because it's constantly finding ways to apply your knowledge quickly. He also needs to hire a manager, that way they can have a person they can go to in order to deal with things that aren't Nile.
I dont really get what it is about Nigel but I can listen to him talk for hours and it's always interesting, funny and inspiring. He trully is amazing❤
Im no chemistry scholar or a student of the sciences, but NileRed is one of my favorite channels and honestly people. He puts so much work, time and dedication into every single video that the wait between videos is well worth it. He even figured out what time of day is optimal for recording the narrations for the videos. Hes truly a pioneer because when he says "im not quite sure how to do it" thats because theres no material on it. Why? Hes the only one that takes the time to find the corralation and methods required to make his videos work. His absolute dedication to making sure his viewers get the best quality videos possible, which you would know if you see just how far and how invested he is. This dude was cooking bromine in his parents garage
You can tell how much he loves his family and i think that's hot af. The fact that he would have 3k and give his brother 2k, shows how much he values the people around him. That right there is a good man.
not long ago I was literally wasting my life away watching stuff on youtube. I watched pretty much all there was new to watch from the youtube channels I was following and kept looking through suggestions. then I came across a NileRed video that I don't even recall which one was it however like 45-50 mins or so into the video I realised I was 45-50 mins into a video of a creator that i never heard of before. it captivated me so much the time passed and found myself watching NileRed videos hours later. Nigel is so inspirational and just a great person and the projects he does are just not the average too-much-time-on-my-hands kinda creator' video. he actually has a vision and a plan for every single video he releases that simply sounds impossible yet becomes reality once the video comes to an end which is so great. I wish I found his channels way earlier and I wish him the best of luck in all the great work he does
nigel is great i havent been watching youtube much because everyone seems to behave in the same "content brain" manner where they do things to maximize views and profits, but ive consistently watched him because his content is really entertaining and seems like he genuinely enjoys it, i dont know why that matters to me but it makes it really enjoyable, that and the fact that he pushes school and not just school but science to kids which is like my life purpose pushing kids towards science

Tbh, all of this is very inspiring to me, especially at this moment. I've created a company 3 and a half years ago, together with a friend, but during these years I really started to hate both this work and working with that friend, he's still my friend and I still love him, but I never wanted to work with him again. But I couldn't just quit, because I would put him too in a tough spot, the company is not able to run without either of the two of us. So a couple of years ago I did what Nigel did, I started telling him that I would quit in the near future, and to take it into consideration. But he never took it seriously even for a single time, until a couple days ago, when I reached my final breaking point. I think I finally have found the resolve to let it go, and to finally stop making my life a living hell. The sad part about this is that I ended up hating what once I loved to do, I think I'll just take a break for a while and then open a new company in pursuit of what I love to do. I just don't ever want to wake up again in the morning preferring suicide to having to go through my daily routine. I want to enjoy life once again, and not doing something I despise for 16 hours a day, no amount of money is worth my mental sanity.
Great interview, and really nice to hear about the struggles of building a thing that traps you, I’m on the other side of building something that got too big, and it sucked to let 18 people go from a company. But I’m much happier now and have the feeling of things being back in the fun stages instead of dealing with so much people management. Hope you can keep things small and sustainable, Nigel seems to have a good vision and isn’t trying to be everything to everyone. Love it.

I started watching his channel because the videos helped me get to sleep quicker. I’ve followed him for years at this point and get excited when a new journey begins or a project is completed even though I have no serious grasp on chemistry. Such a great creator! I can’t wait to see what else he does in the future.
Any video that's longer format is good to sleep as long as it's interesting in some way, I used to like watching history vids(ancient) I feel like I'm learning while I sleep 😂 like subconscious absorbing it
I've never been very interested in chemistry. There were some mildly interesting experiments back in school, like making artificial flavors, but other than that it just looked like tedious calculations. NileRed manages to make chemistry look interesting without just doing stunts! On one hand it feels like "procedure", like this is what a chemist might be doing in their actual day job, on the other hand it's always a bit of an adventure, mixed with some occasional chaotic humor.

One of the best interviews I've seen. You can tell the questions are thought out and there is a genuine interest to understand the other person. Also I really appreciate how even when you construct a compelling narrative (fascination with the natural world) when he rebuffed you you're able to take it and be open to the truth. I think I struggle with that in general.
I don't think I've ever actually commented on a video before, but @NileRed, as a much smaller creator who was recently booted from the community and organization I founded several years ago: what you had to say about your goals, and the pressures of managing people and a business as a creator really hit home, and have helped me make peace with what happened and the freedom it restores to me. Nigel has really made me enjoy chemistry unlike in my high school chem class where we put ice in a beaker onto a hot plate and watched it melt and boil

I think that what appeals to Nigel is the same thing that appeals to me about programming/software projects. I don't like pursuing projects anybody can do - and they do get boring once I solve the big problem that's involved, even though actually completing the project is a challenge unto itself. I want to do the undone and/or explore the esoteric or arcane, because the only value to be had from doing something anyone can do is purely self-entertainment, and I can already do that a million different ways, but I have to apply myself and solve unique problems to do things nobody is doing. I don't want to solve coding problems that there's a dozen Stackoverflow posts about, I want to invent new algorithms that have never existed before - so that's what I do as a coder. I totally get Nigel's motivation.
First time watcher of this channel and honestly, this was a great interview/podcast. Such a good interview style and Nigel is an excellent guest, both because of his stories as well as his natural storytelling. Also, Eric has put some work in the gym and it shows, good for you man!
His curiosity made him one of the best and interesting youtubers out there. He likes to build things. It’s like solving puzzle and he found chemistry as his great tool to do that. Lots of respect to his view of challenges. It is exciting to have millions of views but he doesn’t want to kill his fascination and do the same thing.
I have three takaways: 1. Nigel is an artist. He’s interested in materials, creation and processing, he’s driven to achieving a unique result that meets his sensibilities, and meet his personal vision, and he’s rooted in experience. He can’t do what he does if he’s not inspired. (Lol just got to the point in the video where he talks about being an artist) 2. It makes sense that Nigel Red & blue & extras are interesting because he’s so interesting! 3. I believe capitalism has sucked the joy out of the material world. Products are cheap and ubiquitous, there’s no value in labor or craft, little creativity, no uniqueness, things quickly break and are replaced and have no history. A lot of the things Nigel says are interesting are outside of that system.
This podcast was wonderful to listen to quietly with deep understanding. Now you can see what kind of outlook he has on the world and generally a bit of his private life. I feel like I would like to be inspired by him a bit. Nevertheless, thanks for this podcast even if it is almost a year old. It was great to find you.

Nigel has a truly amazing character that's for sure. What really made me comment is the fact that your interviewing skills are unmatched. All the questions were on point, you followed everything Nigel said and asked very percise and meaningful questions. This is probably one of the best modern age podcasts I've seen so far.

I love what he said about using different pathways to convert the same substances, like turning cellulose into sugar. I think it really highlights how much WORK enzymes do in our world.
What I really like about Nigel here is shear persistent especially with the edible chem videos when shit goes wrong or a method doesn't work, he still persists through despite losing months of progress.

His fascination of chemistry and small objects mirrors my interest in guns and small machines. Im also into chemistry as an interest but i have a huge personal problem with focusing on the non-tangible (intricate concepts requaired to mentally sort out chemistry as an activity). Not sure if that makes sense, but Im a visual learner and if i can't visualize it im completely lost. chemistry can be very complicated and intricate with major consequences if you mess up a minute detail, Small moving parts can perform complicated functions despite being ridiculously simple yet genius but at the worst won't work. The way everything in a firearm comes together is like a combination of engineering and art with the danger and taboo, but my brain understands it more naturally than writing in a chemistry text book. I think i could be good at chemistry by shadowing a chemist though. I'm also a big film fan so it sounds like me and him have a whole lot in common
If you’re ever in northern Arkansas I’d be happy to teach you some chemistry stuff. As far as learning on your own, TH-cam videos are great and join the sciences forum, the more you read and the more you watch you’ll suddenly start understanding things.
I only started watching Nigel's videos about 2 weeks ago, but I genuinely love all of the content that I've seen of his so far from his really precise and thoroughly planned main channel videos, to his side channel videos that show a little more of his charismatic personality. I also love that during this interview, I found out that he enjoys urbex because while I myself have never done it, The Proper People are one of my favorite TH-cam channels for their videography when they visit abandoned places. I'm an artist in my day-to-day career, I don't think I'm probably his typical viewer demographic, and I think my highest level of chemistry knowledge was from an AP chem course I took 10 years ago, but even though I may not understand everything he explains in his videos, he still makes it super easy to follow along and it's overall very entertaining. I really like how he described himself as more of an artist as well because I personally think art can be for everyone and there are so many disciplines that can overlap with art as well. I'm really glad his videos were recommended to me and I appreciate that he was able to re-introduce me to chemistry in a way that is really fun 💙

12:02 I've never heard someone express this feeling, that I also have. People often are perplexed at this notion and don't understand that viewpoint. I enjoy fictional story telling but I'd prefer it be fiction that I can either place myself into or is realistic, in the sense that I could imagine this fictional work being non-fiction. In other words, the narrative and characters don't break the laws of the universe and doesn't have events that are PHYSICALLY impossible to happen in the real world. Like sci-fi and fantasy movies just haven't interested me, i cant imagine fantastical beasts and super hero's in my real life, therefore i cant relate or really put myself into the story. I can't follow it because It breaks the rules of the universe. So many physics, narratives, events, and characters, and so on are so fantastical or magical that you just know that could never happen in reality. That makes it extremely hard for me to get invested in the narrative and world building. My favorite genres are true crime, non-fiction, documentaries, historical films, realistic fiction, and (auto)biography's. I'm such a weirdo and outlier for that but I can't imagine myself in a story with Spider Men and Thanos. Like where the fuck do I fit, y'know? Thanos Snap my ass TF out of this movie. Pls n thx. 😊
I think the future is bright with young intelligent capable guys like these guys, Nigel is a legend and has managed to get me really interested in chemistry and experiments. So hes definitely doing something right!

I'm always reminded of that when Nigel talks about people criticizing him for doing dangerous things and making them look easy. But if you show all the tedium and safety steps, people won't watch it, so... a delicate balance. I think he's doing a great job.
If nothing else, this made me understand NileRed’s fascination with things that’s otherwise seemed kind of odd to me, like when he’s described doing projects and making seemingly mundane chemicals “just because he wanted to”. Hearing his motivation of wanting to make something that’s difficult and unattainable for most, and have access to these special things whose whole existence is so weird and cool, gives a neat insight into his state of mind Loved the video!
This was so valuable to watch and relate to. Anybody who has a vision and achieves a difficult thing has to manage the mania and self-determination that goes along with it. The sense of isolation that comes from bearing one's own unique problem that nobody really understands all the nuances of, is itself a feat to overcome and a process in and of itself. Thanks for this podcast episode, it was very human.

I’ve followed him for years at this point and get excited when a new journey begins or a project is completed even though I have no serious grasp on chemistry. Such a great creator! I can’t wait to see what else he does in the future.
Any video that's longer format is good to sleep as long as it's interesting in some way, I used to like watching history vids(ancient) I feel like I'm learning while I sleep 😂 like subconscious absorbing it

I've never been very interested in chemistry. There were some mildly interesting experiments back in school, like making artificial flavors, but other than that it just looked like tedious calculations. NileRed manages to make chemistry look interesting without just doing stunts! On one hand it feels like "procedure", like this is what a chemist might be doing in their actual day job, on the other hand it's always a bit of an adventure, mixed with some occasional chaotic humor.
Back in my day it was Bill Nye the science guy, Nilered/blue definitely picked up the torch in that regard
I didn't know that Nigel was struggling with cash till 2019, the perseverance is real
He really doesnt look like he is, hes just very clean

One of the best interviews I've seen. You can tell the questions are thought out and there is a genuine interest to understand the other person.
Also I really appreciate how even when you construct a compelling narrative (fascination with the natural world) when he rebuffed you you're able to take it and be open to the truth. I think I struggle with that in general.

This is one of the best interviews I have ever watched.
I think that what appeals to Nigel is the same thing that appeals to me about programming/software projects. I don't like pursuing projects anybody can do - and they do get boring once I solve the big problem that's involved, even though actually completing the project is a challenge unto itself. I want to do the undone and/or explore the esoteric or arcane, because the only value to be had from doing something anyone can do is purely self-entertainment, and I can already do that a million different ways, but I have to apply myself and solve unique problems to do things nobody is doing. I don't want to solve coding problems that there's a dozen Stackoverflow posts about, I want to invent new algorithms that have never existed before - so that's what I do as a coder. I totally get Nigel's motivation.
Those are some next gen mic stands. 13.4 billion years in r&d.

Gotta admit Nigel is a sexy man
I have three takaways:
1. Nigel is an artist. He’s interested in materials, creation and processing, he’s driven to achieving a unique result that meets his sensibilities, and meet his personal vision, and he’s rooted in experience. He can’t do what he does if he’s not inspired. (Lol just got to the point in the video where he talks about being an artist)
2. It makes sense that Nigel Red & blue & extras are interesting because he’s so interesting!
3. I believe capitalism has sucked the joy out of the material world. Products are cheap and ubiquitous, there’s no value in labor or craft, little creativity, no uniqueness, things quickly break and are replaced and have no history. A lot of the things Nigel says are interesting are outside of that system.

This podcast was wonderful to listen to quietly with deep understanding. Now you can see what kind of outlook he has on the world and generally a bit of his private life. Nigel has a truly amazing character that's for sure. What really made me comment is the fact that your interviewing skills are unmatched. All the questions were on point, you followed everything Nigel said and asked very percise and meaningful questions. This is probably one of the best modern age podcasts I've seen so far.

I love what he said about using different pathways to convert the same substances, like turning cellulose into sugar. I think it really highlights how much WORK enzymes do in our world.
What I really like about Nigel here is shear persistent especially with the edible chem videos when shit goes wrong or a method doesn't work, he still persists through despite losing months of progress.

I remember the day Nigel first appeared on camera. I can't believe I've been following NileRed for damn near a decade at this point
His fascination of chemistry and small objects mirrors my interest in guns and small machines. Im also into chemistry as an interest but i have a huge personal problem with focusing on the non-tangible (intricate concepts requaired to mentally sort out chemistry as an activity). Not sure if that makes sense, but Im a visual learner and if i can't visualize it im completely lost. chemistry can be very complicated and intricate with major consequences if you mess up a minute detail, Small moving parts can perform complicated functions despite being ridiculously simple yet genius but at the worst won't work. The way everything in a firearm comes together is like a combination of engineering and art with the danger and taboo, but my brain understands it more naturally than writing in a chemistry text book. I think i could be good at chemistry by shadowing a chemist though. I'm also a big film fan so it sounds like me and him have a whole lot in common
If you’re ever in northern Arkansas I’d be happy to teach you some chemistry stuff. As far as learning on your own, TH-cam videos are great and join the sciences forum, the more you read and the more you watch you’ll suddenly start understanding things.
I only started watching Nigel's videos about 2 weeks ago, but I genuinely love all of the content that I've seen of his so far from his really precise and thoroughly planned main channel videos, to his side channel videos that show a little more of his charismatic personality. I also love that during this interview, I found out that he enjoys urbex because while I myself have never done it, The Proper People are one of my favorite TH-cam channels for their videography when they visit abandoned places. I'm an artist in my day-to-day career, I don't think I'm probably his typical viewer demographic, and I think my highest level of chemistry knowledge was from an AP chem course I took 10 years ago, but even though I may not understand everything he explains in his videos, he still makes it super easy to follow along and it's overall very entertaining.
I really like how he described himself as more of an artist as well because I personally think art can be for everyone and there are so many disciplines that can overlap with art as well. I'm really glad his videos were recommended to me and I appreciate that he was able to re-introduce me to chemistry in a way that is really fun 💙

I've never heard someone express this feeling, that I also have. People often are perplexed at this notion and don't understand that viewpoint. I enjoy fictional story telling but I'd prefer it be fiction that I can either place myself into or is realistic, in the sense that I could imagine this fictional work being non-fiction. In other words, the narrative and characters don't break the laws of the universe and doesn't have events that are PHYSICALLY impossible to happen in the real world. Like sci-fi and fantasy movies just haven't interested me, i cant imagine fantastical beasts and super hero's in my real life, therefore i cant relate or really put myself into the story. I can't follow it because It breaks the rules of the universe. So many physics, narratives, events, and characters, and so on are so fantastical or magical that you just know that could never happen in reality. That makes it extremely hard for me to get invested in the narrative and world building.
My favorite genres are true crime, non-fiction, documentaries, historical films, realistic fiction, and (auto)biography's. I'm such a weirdo and outlier for that but I can't imagine myself in a story with Spider Men and Thanos. Like where the fuck do I fit, y'know? Thanos Snap my ass TF out of this movie. Pls n thx. 😊

I loved this podcast! It felt very raw and highlights the processes of discovery of our thoughts and minds.
I think the future is bright with young intelligent capable guys like these guys, Nigel is a legend and has managed to get me really interested in chemistry and experiments. So hes definitely doing something right!
Lorne Michaels said: "The problem with making it look easy is that people think it's easy". I'm always reminded of that when Nigel talks about people criticizing him for doing dangerous things and making them look easy. But if you show all the tedium and safety steps, people won't watch it, so... a delicate balance. I think he's doing a great job.
If nothing else, this made me understand NileRed’s fascination with things that’s otherwise seemed kind of odd to me, like when he’s described doing projects and making seemingly mundane chemicals “just because he wanted to”. Hearing his motivation of wanting to make something that’s difficult and unattainable for most, and have access to these special things whose whole existence is so weird and cool, gives a neat insight into his state of mind

This was so valuable to watch and relate to. Anybody who has a vision and achieves a difficult thing has to manage the mania and self-determination that goes along with it. The sense of isolation that comes from bearing one's own unique problem that nobody really understands all the nuances of, is itself a feat to overcome and a process in and of itself. Thanks for this podcast episode, it was very human.
