The majestic playing is constantly exciting and it feels like he squeezes all musical power from Chopin´s exuberant polonaise. You need to be a giant in every sense to play with such authority.
I've enjoyed nearly all of Lazar Berman's recordings. He had an style that was rooted in the classic Russian tradition. He could make the piano sing beautifully with seemingly little effort. When I first heard Berman, it was with Karajan & the Tchaikovsky concerto. He never rushed through any of it but tended to play with brute strength. Although I've always preferred Horowitz & Rubinstein, Berman's is the recording that tends to linger in my mind like a strong tidal way of musical notes.
i will not deny that this man is a great artist - but i feel this interpretation not one of his best. too loud too much for me, and the rushing of the first bar by one 8th note i find is in bad taste. mistake in L.H. at 3:36. the blurriness off the audio does not help either. just my opinion. thank you for posting this video. always good to watch these historic performances
