I find is hard to fathom that Pollini is gone. I've lived with his playing my entire life - that intelligence, freshness, honesty, straightforwardness, textual fidelity, unfathomable technique, gorgeous sound, and radical modesty. He will be sorely missed!

So many commenters seem blissfully unaware that the tempo Chopin indicated for this piece is actually (despite the "Lento Sostenuto") incredibly fast: 50bpm in half-measure. Pollini is virtually the only pianist who actually plays it approaching the tempo Chopin wrote (even then he's quite a bit slower), so any criticisms of this being too fast, take it up with Fred...
Gerbil Jim Several pupils of Chopin said that he played fast. But so fast for a lento sostenuto it leaves perplexed. At 50 the dotted quarter note and for 77 measures of this piece (if we do not take into account the ritenuto of the measure 25 and by playing without rubato) it leads to a duration of 3 min and 5 s! Even Pollini is too slow here (He is rather 35). But yes, Chopin indicated this tempo. However this nocturne is so magical with a much slower tempo.
It is rather odd. We may never know what Chopin was thinking, whether he made a mistake or something. I don't believe in always adhering to the composer's written score but with this nocturne I do think it ought to be played quicker than how most people tend to interpret it.
It's 20 seconds longer on the Nocturnes CD he did that this version is. Which seems just about right (for Pollini and his faster tempo interpretation anyway). This live version way too fast.
Listen to Evgueni Kissin ´s version and let's talk about it after. I haver never listened to this piece played so fast like pollini does. He may be a world class pianist but the tempo doesn't fit at all
Pollini is the best, when it comes to respecting the score, the intended melody of the composer He is not overwhelming the audience with his own interpretation, like other pianists. Many people will call his music boring, but it is just almost played plain neutral. His level of chrisp melody will never be challenged by anyone. If you want an extravagant interpretation, you are listening to the wrong interpreter.
Such a wonderful, magical interpretation of this particularly beautiful composition. Pollini is one of the greatest pianists of our time. R.I.P Maurizio ( my mentor and friend)
Pollini is my favourite for Chopin, I think. He allows the beauty of the original music to come through- his interpretation is quite subtle. I hate when one is distracted in the middle of a piece by the extreme and dramatic interpretation. Pollini seems to get the balance right, with a lot of emotion but not overdoing it. This is just gentle and lovely, and I could listen to it over and over and over.
As always, Pollini uses his tremendous technic to fade himself behind Chopin and give the very essence of this music in the most scupulous way. Very close to perfection.

I like his piano performances and interpretations better than everyone else. I love how wise and talented he is. He knows what needs to be done all along. his music makes sense, it's real; not just playing notes and shoving dynamics heartlessly. I just heard of him a couple of days ago! On TH-cam! I didn't even know who he was. I still don't, I need to research this guy. I heard Etude op. 10 n°4 in C sharp minor on TH-cam and I LOVED it, then wondered who played it, and it said "Polini" so I was wondering what else he played, and came here to this one, which I loved as well. That guy is a genius in interpreting music, I don't even need to hear more pieces to figure that out.

Pollini studied with Michelangeli. Temperaments are so similar and I love them both. They state the music very simply and let the piece evolve naturally. There is also an underlying melancholy and even a bit of anxiety that keeps the sound so human and the emotions so real, not manipulated.
How can you possibly say that he doesn't feel the music? Look at his face! It shows such emotions. Even if one couldn't hear the music, one could say -just by looking at his face- that it is a masterpiece, played by a master.

I implore you to listen Dinu Lipatti. His version of this Chopin nocturne, to me, is the most heavenly version I have heard. He even ad libs in a couple of spots that send me and other listeners to the moon. But alas, each to his own!

Does anyone know about the score? Ive have one "published" by Leschetizky, where he follows, for example, in bar 13 a ritard followed by a tempo, and in bar 28 he plays the Bb note an octave higher and embellishes the phrases--and considering what follows I think it makes sense. But every other score I have of this nocturne (I have 6 others) none of them show this, and all the "big" players today play these -this "tamer" version.I thought it may have to do with earlier and later French and German editions, but can't find any info.
This is the perfect music to sip a fine whiskey to and forget there is a world around you and just contemplate. No word needs to be said. Beethoven and Mozart's music fills me with joy, yet Chopin fills me with contemplation....

I find his playing of this piece very beautiful and touching. Do all pianists must sound the same? same tempo, same dynamics, same colors ? Thank God not! it would make my listening quite boring and predictable. Music is written, but it only becomes alive when played with soul.
Excellent performance, yet another reminder that even though Chopin passed away at just 39, he left the world with possibly the most beautiful music ever written for piano.

The tempo was definitely marked by Chopin. You can look up the manuscript.

I like Pollini, too. But Dinu Lipatti's recording of this nocturne is unbelievably gorgeous. I have yet to find anything that touches it.

He didn't show due to health issues :( however Charles Hamelin was invited to perform instead. He is incredible.

How can you possibly say that he doesn't feel the music? Look at his face! It shows such emotions. Even if one couldn't hear the music, one could say -just by looking at his face- that it is a masterpiece, played by a master.

I implore you to listen Dinu Lipatti. His version of this Chopin nocturne, to me, is the most heavenly version I have heard. He even ad libs in a couple of spots that send me and other listeners to the moon. But alas, each to his own!

When you've heard it the slow "beautiful" way so many times, its actually refreshing to hear it done differently.

Does anyone know about the score? Ive have one "published" by Leschetizky, where he follows, for example, in bar 13 a ritard followed by a tempo, and in bar 28 he plays the Bb note an octave higher and embellishes the phrases--and considering what follows I think it makes sense. But every other score I have of this nocturne (I have 6 others) none of them show this, and all the "big" players today play these -this "tamer" version.I thought it may have to do with earlier and later French and German editions, but can't find any info.

Wow! I never heard this piece played so fast! I love it! I am surprised by how much I love hearing it played so rapidly!
This is the perfect music to sip a fine whiskey to and forget there is a world around you and just contemplate. No word needs to be said.

This is by far the fastest interpretation of this nocturne I have ever heard. Still he manages to intermediate all the feelings this beautiful nocturne has to give. Thanks for the upload!

I find his playing of this piece very beautiful and touching. Do all pianists must sound the same? same tempo, same dynamics, same colors ? Thank God not! it would make my listening quite boring and predictable. Music is written, but it only becomes alive when played with soul.
Excellent performance, yet another reminder that even though Chopin passed away at just 39, he left the world with possibly the most beautiful music ever written for piano.

To play Chopin is not only a question of technice perfection. It's necessary to understand Chopin. And he did!
