So coming come home one night and a BMW was matching my speed so I hit the brake pretty hard to just get behind him and it was black ice and it was a wobble where you just cannot tame it down - and your speed is with the weight suddenly you are just not slowing down but almost accelerating like a toboggan instead. So smart in hindsight, but I was sliding from the left lane angling off to the right and if I took the foot off the brake that back end was going to rotate fast - and I remember all I could see was the flashes of street light posts going by and knowing they were bad news - so it came to me - let the brake go as soon as one goes by and I should land between them - so I did that and Pooosh with flying snow with the thud of it falling on top of the car and wipers one and it came to me "GO!!!" so in gear and I drove right out of it. I could see the mess as I left and it was perfect - right center and nice slide in mess and straight out exit.

More recent - with my 2004 Chrysler Sebring GTC convertible - somehow in the middle of January I got the job to drive someone "home but no address" after some church event - it ended up at the worst part of town and he just got out when some buddies were spotted - I was not happy with the whole thing but okay fine. So going home down portage avenue - and I did not drive a lot in winter - avoided it with that car as it had new all season on the front from 2015 when I got it, but the rear were factories still (hard plastic really) - bitter cold where you cannot see intersection with car exhaust often. So I made the mistake of - the light was green and people were looking to be going so I was not worried about them, and I move over a lane but my back tires would not leave the ruts and - that light had gone yellow and people just stopped "going" - anyway somehow - it was like a dance but I did at least two circles and I went from the far left lane right over to almost hitting the right curb but it stopped perfectly backward and all I would see during that spin was just so many cars almost hitting me. But backward somehow totally untouched and people were all perfectly lined up looking at me - I just waved thank yous and got my car going the right way (which took a good amount of room). I did replace those with all weathers (which were outstanding difference and looked pretty darn nice) as I felt - with my increasing "must trips" to help my parents I was risking my life on those tires.

Sweet! Part 2 of the winter podcast series 🎉🎉🎉 It's always nice picking bits of facts and best practices from your podcasts!
My story: I once went on a fast perfect full drift angle while turning left on a crossroad. Heard some kids cheering on the road side, but it was completely unintentional because I lost traction due to the icy road and I swear I thought I'd have a heart attack! Also, my car is AWD, it was my first year driving in Ontario and I'm just too old to drift now!!
    😂😂😂
Moral of the story is- No matter how good (or bad) a driver you are, invest on good winter tires!

So many stories .. my little '77 Civic with the Hondamatic (very much like your paddle shifter automatics if you had no automated gear changing ability - so I had 2 forward gears - no tach but the speedometer had markings "1" and "2" gear range - manual choke in that car too. Me and my buddies - if you had two strong regular guys, you could easily lift the back end, and push it around on ice - so few times just braced on the cement curb and lean to push it out (likely luck it did not bend anything as I do not recall thinking about it much). I remember just never freaking out spinning that car out - just would look for a snow pack on the right and I knew as soon as I hit it the car would do its spin and then I would just get going again (ugh that car had for a winter - replace a couple times - a not electronic fuel pump that would get vapour locks - so run grab snow and put it on that pump and it would clear the bubble and off I went). My dad had the coolest possible car at the time - a new 1982 Camaro V6 (GM sold 4,6, 8 cylinder options) an that car with its "Good Year Eagle" tires - they looked sharp but that car even in summer the back could spin it tires - it spend its life spinning out. My girlfriend was a Shiriner thing - a Jobbie Daughter - anyway somehow I had a car full of them - too many for seat belts just begging police to pull us over I felt - and it was that black ice on a corner where 110kmh hard left turn (it was designed to go straight head but suddenly a 90 degree road you had to turn with all the straight head warning signs all broken and missing - and I was going around that sharp corner and had that - I'm not feeling the wheels gripping so it was hoping the slant (pulls you down) and speed (pushes you up) world balance out to get around the corner - and we did but I was sweating nails and amazed no one noticed. Another post for the Camaro story ...

SUMMER story - if you ever want to know - when driving a construction (site clearance) truck - had my load shift literally dead center of the biggest intersection in Calgary at the time during traffic rush.

Great warning about black ice! I once spun out on highway I-75 going through Detroit. The road looked like it had a light layer of snow, but when I went under an overpass, the car hit a really large patch of black ice, and the steering wheel became totally useless. That is a scary feeling. I tried to point the wheels in the direction the car was already moving and just hope the front wheels would grip the road again, but the car ended up spinning around and eventually landed on the shoulder facing the wrong way. Fortunately it was 11 pm and highway traffic was exceedingly light, so no one was hurt.

Driving in the winter is like playing the lottery. You never know when you might have the perfect drive in the winter weather!
