Abandoned Farms in Ayrshire and South west Scotland (A to D)

  • Many farms have been abandoned because of their poor quality land, developments, mechanisation, investment, etc. Some are ruins and others have been almost totally robbed of their stone to build new houses, drystone dyking, etc. The farms were often associated with country estates and may have quite high quality stonework whilst others were poorly constructed and even had foundations using stones from field clearance. The farms names often give clues to the land quality, historic events or archaeological features such as Iron Age camps, etc. If stonework is visible the development history can often be read from the walls, with old windows and doors blocked up, etc.

Thank you for this! Fascinating. I do hope that any sites of historic interest are preserved.

A glimpse into the past. And I am recognizing placenames that I have come across while hunting for my ancestors. I am assuming as farm workers they moved around.
Plus I do love abandoned buildings and land uses in the past. Thanks so much for making the videos.

I am glad you enjoyed the video. Farm workers regularly moved, sometimes annually.

G to Z still to come. Castlewalls is a delight on a sunny day - I wrote a Wikipedia article as well if memory serves.

@@rogergriffith286 Yes it is a bit better, but not by much. At least I can hear it by dragging the volume indicator up to max.

Anyone come across Knockscunnion in the Coylton, Ayrshire area . It was operating in the 1830s. I couldn't find it at NLS.

Ooops! I meant 1730s when my family tenanted it.

I'm beginning to wonder if it's Knockmurran which is shown in the OPR as Tenshillingland is to the NE and that was also occupied by family members in the early 1730s and again in the early to mid 1750s.
