I find it very interesting trying to locate the remains of former farm buildings. I find the National Library of Scotland's "side by side" maps invaluable for this. Even just finding a footprint or a layer of masonry is enough. Going from looking at something on an old map to standing where the building once stood is pretty incredible. Great collection you have found for this video.

Thanks. I usually stumble across them whilst looking for something else and then enjoy the map researching task.

My grandfather was born at a Giffen Farm near Beith. I struggled to figure out where it was so am wondering could it be the one mentioned in the video? In 1890s

All sorts of reasons - mainly poor quailty land and low prices paid for their crops, etc.

Got a question for you, I used to live in a street in shotts called starryshaw road .. I notice a farm with the the name starryshaw in shotts and also noticed it whilst iv stayed here in ayrshire over the back roads towards beith and that if im not mistaken .. would these be linked ? And if so where the hell did that name come from LOL

Shaw is Scots for a wood. Star is Scots for the sedge plant. Basically means a wet wood dominated by sedge plants. Not that rare a name as you say.

@@jaycruzsemple Easy to follow your text. I see that the tower in the loch near the RSPB centre is being consolidated and the path improved. Best Wishes, Roger
