Her channel gives me great hope for my children who are the strong ladies age and my grandchildren as they explore all genres of music but have learned to become very discerning in what they choose to feed their spirit with. I am so grateful that she found this song and knew almost immediately the depths of the bands storytelling. Such a powerful song. This is one of my favorites. So many people never really listen to the lyrics, because the musicianship is is so outstanding! And, that "little guitar" is a mandolin, a standard instrument in Bluegrass music.

You should check out Tyler Childers. Especially "Nose on the Grindstone". Very moving for me. Pain is something we all feel, and I think knowing you're not alone is why sad country and bluegrass can feel good, it's like a release.
I have been a subscriber for only a short time but love your reactions to country music I have seen you cry until you ran out of tissues but that's what country music can do that it's all about the story and the music I'm old raised up in the 60s so I love classic rock but that music pretty much died around 1980 so I started started listening to country and love it but even that started to sound different in 2010 and then Chris Stapleton came along so keep up with the country journey and I'll be right there with you because there are a lot more songs and artist other than Chris who will do what country music does and that is make you cry laugh and think as they tell you a story and take you on a journey

Nice reaction! You should give Nickel Creek a shot. They're a bluegrass group that started up in the 90's. They're really a crossover band in my opinion, but they are very talented. Try "When You Come Back Down" if you're interested in giving them a try. Chris Thile even plays one of those "little guitars."

I would recommend you check out the more independent/radical side of bluegrass they call "Folk" music. Bands like, the devil makes three, poor mans poison, Shovel and rope, all are the Jam. If you are diving deeper into blugrass id suggest, the del mccoury band,ironhorse, skaggs and 4 more of a blu..contemporary vibe the dappled grey's.

That 'little guitar' is a mandolin. Bill Monroe led the way in using this particular instrument. Ricky Skaggs played Bill Monroes when it went into the bludgrass hall of fame. An up and coming star mandolin player is Sierra Hull. Check out all these people.. Love Bluegrass... its America's music.

Please please check out as well: trampled by turtles, devil makes three, and greensky bluegrass. They have so many good songs but I'll make initial recommendations. For tbt, check out empire. For dmt, try North Carolina. For greensky I'll say windshield. Interesting thing about Chris Stapleton. He wrote a lot of hits performed by other artists. Kenny Chesney never wanted nothing more, Adele if it hadn't been for love. Luke Bryant drink a beer. The list goes on.
Bluegrass is a great rabbit hole to go down, especially progressive bluegrass or Newgrass. Sam Bush, The Travelin' McCourys, and Michael Cleveland are great places to start.
I am older retired . the one thing older music, from most genres, were good at was telling stories and having a message. there are some artist today that could be very good at it if they tried. the genre is not important. I think in my humble opinion the stories and message makes all the difference. it helps people to connect with the song and think about the message. that can change lives.
Yes, you are one of the few who seemed to understand. My personal interpretation is that this might specifically refer to the time between when Lincoln freed the slaves & before the war was over. When slaves ran & were caught while they were still property, they would be returned & whipped. If they ran after they were freed, they were simply hunted down & murdered. Their only chance was to reach that 'freedom line of Lincoln soldiers". Many, many died trying.
There is a group called Our Native Daughters. It features four Black women who all play banjo (and other instruments). They believe (I think rightfully) that country/roots/Americana, whatever you want to call it, originated with Black people. They are worth checking out. Only 1 album so far, but they all have other projects. They are - Lelya McCalla, Allison Russell, Amythyst Kiah, & the uber talented Rhiannon Giddens. I understand what you are saying as never thinking this music is for you, but I think all distinctly American music originated with Black people. For instance, the banjo is derived from the West African instrument known as the akonting and was introduced to America by enslaved people. Enjoy your journey.
