Many Indiana Fever fans think Erica Wheeler needs to be traded. Other fans think Kelsey Mitchell is a ball hog. Are the allegations true? In this video, I break it down.

Disagree about Mitchell. She is just too selfish. She is clearly competing with Caitlin. Remember that Caitlin passed Mitchell on her way to setting the NCAA scoring record. She has also passed Kelsey in a few other lists in the NCAA and now in the WNBA. I think Kelsey feels overshadowed and feels the ned to prove herself. Kelsey is also a free agent after this season, so it is a contract year for her. She is clearly playing for herself and NOT the team. I do not expect this to change. She praises Caitlin, then goes out and again refuses to pass her the ball. Definitely not a team player--at all.

I'm among the biggest Caitlin fanboys, but despite Kelsey Mitchell driving me crazy occasionally I totally accept her faults as I think the good far outweighs the bad. For one thing she is a scoring drought preventer. Other than that 30 point lead they blew I can't recall many long droughts. Secondly, as a team one thing that also drives me crazy is all the shot clock violations. True, she takes some wild shots, but without Kelsey the shot clock violations would have me in a straitjacket. Keep up the great analysis. I agree having a third best player this good is a true blessing.

  • @vansantsam

I think Mitchell is coming around and accepting her new role. Mitchell like Wheeler dribble too much, she does best when she dribbles 3 times or less and either shoots or passes, when she dribbles too much the defense has time to catch up with taller players and make things more difficult for her.. I would have Mitchell hang around the 3 point line and when she gets the ball to either shoot or pass right away.. Having her hang around the 3 point line will also open up the defense because she is a big threat from there.. If she does nothing else practice more and more from the 3 point line and stop dribbling..

Wheeler just isn’t a fit on this team or if she comes in Clark still needs to run the offense or sit Clark for 2-5mins when she does. Sides though seems to want the on the court at same time and Wheeler runs things.
Mitchell is fine except she needs to learn to kick it back out when lane closes and as you pointed out should always get it to Clark to take it up court or to reset the offense.
If neither player can or wants to do that then they should be traded or released.

Carter, i love your insights and analysis! Thank you for taking the time to create these podcasts!
I'd like to share some thoughts on Kelsey Mitchell, if i may.
Before Caitlin Clark's college campaign to break scoring records, Kelsey Mitchell was #2 in all time NCAA Division 1 scoring. The only person with more was Kelsey Plum.
In 2024, TWO young upstarts surpassed her achievement: Caitlin, who ended up as #1, and Dyaisha Fair who ended up as #3. (Kelsey Plum held on to #2.)
I'm sure Kelsey felt a certain way about having one of the rookies who surpassed her achievement drafted to the Fever. Especially the rookie who was surrounded by hype. I feel empathy for Kelsey.
A better coach would have anticipated this and helped Kelsey process her feelings about this. However, Kelsey didn't have a better coach, she had Crusty Sideshow.
I'm certain Kelsey's feelings about this played a role in the problems with team chemistry in the first 10-12 games of the season.
I do believe the chemistry has improved between Kelsey and Caitlin. I think Kelsey has started to recognize Caitlin's value as a point guard, and Kelsey has started to appreciate having the ball fed to her when she's open. I believe Kelsey understands that her percentages look better when she shoots while open. And i think she's starting to realize Caitlin definitely WILL pass to her when she's open.
Another area where i feel empathy for Kelsey: she has never, not even once, had a winning season since getting drafted into the Fever shit show. She has endured a parade of crappy GM's and coaches for 6 years now, including the current ones. It must be demoralizing. She was the #2 pick in 2018, and hasn't had a winning season in 6 years. Imagine how miserable that must feel.
I feel encouraged at seeing Kelsey pass to Caitlin and others. I also think the time the Fever players hung out at the all-star game helped their chemistry. I suspect that seeing how other people there treated Caitlin may have helped Kelsey see her rookie in a new light.
Also, as Caitlin is starting to be allowed to blossom in Fever games, Kelsey is starting to enjoy feeling what it's like to win.
I want Kelsey to learn to like playing with Caitlin and Aliyah, including feeling less threatened by them and therefore more willing to pass to Caitlin. I hope to see it happen.

Thanks for the information on Kelsey. I researched Kelsey when Caitlin joined the team and was impressed by her stats. She won the Dawn Staley Award in 2018. Caitlin has won it three times (2021-2023). I believed that Kelsey felt that she would be overshadowed by Caitlin's attention but recently she has embraced Caitlin's skills and has credited Caitlin for an increased in her numbers. Teamwork is important and I have seen a great improvement and trust between Kelsey and Caitlin. th-cam.com/video/RFcJNCSXJ_E/w-d-xo.html

The history is interesting, but the one thing that everybody ignores is that Mitchell's father, a career assistant coach at Ohio State who was undoubtedly very important in her life and development as a player, died suddenly at 56 in March this year. While we're trying to analyze her psyche, I suspect that may have had a significant role in her performance. The other important thing to realize is that Clark has never played with a guard who is one tenth as good as Mitchell. Clark has had to learn to look outside and back for Mitchell, especially in the situations where the inside is jammed and where trying to force the ball in is a high risk for a turnover, but defensive coverage of Mitchell outside is likely to be light or none. At Iowa, kicking the ball back was a last ditch desperation move for Clark. With Mitchell it's a winning strategy.

@@PatrickSchoenfelder thank you for that background on Kelsey. I wasn't aware that her father recently passed away. I agree with you that it certainly could have affected her performance. That kind of loss is hard under any circumstances, but the timing of having it happen right before the season started probably made it harder.
I also agree with your point that Caitlin has not been accustomed to having a guard as skilled as Kelsey to work with.

Losing a parent is usually hard, but to have it be unexpected, and him so young...
Some folks have criticized her for not always celebrating with the team, or whatever. I can say from experience, sometimes these moments of joy around you are the times the loss hits you out of nowhere, hard. I would love to see her given a little more grace this season.

You're breakdowns are the best! Agree with your take on Erica and Kelsey. Think Kelsey is keeper even though she has her iso mentality, you can tell she's slowly adapting and does understand CC tallent. I think that's because her whole 6 or so years with the fever shes never experienced playing with someone at Caitlin level who creates open plays for her and Kelsey has always relied on herself to get her buckets when you've never been on a top team. Players have come and go and Kelsey has stayed on that team and probably took the role as the shooter and thats probably her team before CC came. So compared to the 22-24 yr olds on the team who are newer and kelsey just needed more time to adjust. Even Temi who is older has said its rare to play with a point guard who can find her and knows shes open. Kelsey also broke the college scoring record before Caitlin at one point (theres a video where u can see no one cares about at that time because it wasn't popular) so maybe there could of been jealousy there because CC gets attention for all her record breakers. But if you look into Kelsey history shes just a hooper who played with the boys growing up like Caitlin and played basketball with her twin sister in Highschool. Seems like she was raise well. Unlike Wheeler, kelsey is more talented player who is worth keeping and can adapt.

I love me some Kelsey Mitchell. Yes, she needs to move the ball more. She's already orders of magnitude better at it than she was to start the year, and there's no reason to think she won't continue to improve. She plays hard always, hits timely shots, and is currently our most reliable 3 point shooter. Just a gamer. She labored through so many bad years without almost no help in Indy. Her speed, her motor, and her fearlessness is not easy to replace. I want to see her shine on this current team. I can live with some amount of one on one because let's be serious, she can make enough of those shots that I understand why she goes there. Some folks act like there's some perfect players out there we can get, but I promise you, there are not!
If our current version if Kelsey Mitchell is wrong, I don't wanna be right. 😅
Erica...sigh. I like her so much as a person, but as a player she's keeping Grace Berger off the floor and that cannot continue. She has to be signed for much less as our bench mentor. I think we have already started to see them shifting in that direction. Now we need to bid Wallace a fond goodbye as well so Grace can get significant burn. She has so much potential as a combo guard. She can shoot the hell out of that middy and she has the tools to be make a defensive impact. Once or twice a game, I would love to see her in a little bit of a unconventional pick and roll with Clark.
And if it's in the cards to part with Mitchell, I damn sure want Grace to be ready... not thrown into the fire all of a sudden. 😂

As much as I don't care to admit it I think you are spot on regarding EW and KM. What is admirable about CC is she seems to be constantly looking to forward the ball to where it can bring the best results and often that ends up in an assist. Little to no ball hogging. I enjoyed your earlier video on how KM might be coming around to realizing that CC and provide the opportunities for KM to become a more effective player. In defense of EW, I would say that it certainly doesn't hurt to have a guard on the bench who can fill in when the need arises.

    • @PatrickSchoenfelder
      @PatrickSchoenfelder หลายเดือนก่อน

Clark ranks #1 for number of 3-points attempted and #39 for percentage made -- behind more or less everyone whose name you recognize, including Mitchell. She's 42nd for overall shooting. In defense of CC, there was a stretch when she started being more careful with shot selection, still scoring the same number of points on 11 or 12 shots a game as on 15 to 20 earlier. However, Sides then stated publicly that she wanted Clark to take 15 to 20 shots a game, so she did. She isn't scoring any more points, so her percentage plummeted again. There are two arguments for what Sides is doing. One, she believes that Clark will, gradually or suddenly, improve her shooting percentage. The other, IMO more likely, is that Clark shooting all the time draws defensive coverage that opens up other players, especially Boston and Mitchell.

  • @GOLDKW-bl4gp
    @GOLDKW-bl4gp หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Half of the first half Sides has been trying to incorporate Wheeler with CC. For some reason Sides is convinced that CC can be the 2 guard next to Wheeler. CC looks like a fish out of water as the 2 guard. CC cannot be converted to a 2 Guard a 3, 4 or 5. I would rather you give her a break if you have to put Wheeler in the game. Mitchell, I would define her role in a very small box. You are a spot up shooter and a cutter. That is it.

I only ever had one concern about Kelsey, it had absolutely nothing to do with her ability ! It was that she looked like she was not enjoying her basketball. Lately she has seemed as if she has rediscovered her love of the game, laughing & smiling and most importantly.... happy. Caitlin is a once in a generation player. However, Kelsey is also key to the continued success of The Fever !!! Her consistency is truly remarkable. If she gets a good look it's going in. The partnership between Caitlin and Kelsey is blossoming and a beautiful thing to behold. My view is that Iowa became overly reliant on Caitlin. Other capable Iowa players were too willing to sit back and let Caitlin carry the full load. This was OK until they ran into a team capable of limiting although not stopping, Caitlin's impact ......LSU. The Fever need players like Kelsey, Aliyah, Lexi, Smith and the rest to play to their full potential. Every assist that Aliyah passes is one less that Caitlin needs to. Every 3 that Kelsey and Lexi sink take pressure off of Caitlin. Every minute the bench players can hold the line conserves the strength of the starters. Sides challenge is to get the rest of the squad performing to their max. The best engine will not win a race unless the clutch, gearbox and transmission are strong enough to deliver the power to rear wheels effectively.

@@CarterMomon it also may have something to do with Erica not taking care of herself and not wanting to maintain a high level of discipline. 33 is not old for someone to lose what they had when they were 29. I suspect she's been dealing with a series of nagging injuries for awhile now. The kind that doesn't knock you out of play completely but impacts how you play. Every time they showed replays about fouls, the big question was "which of the six fouls on the play do you want to talk about?" Refs let them play because otherwise the whole Belgium team except maybe Van Loo would have fouled out by eight minutes into the first quarter.

The problems between Mitchell and Clark seem to be ironing out slowly, with glitches still regular occurrences. Mitchell seems to be getting used to the uptempo transitions that are one of the strongest points of Clark's game, Mitchell using her great speed -- she is simply the fastest player on the team and one of the fastest in the league -- to get position to be a target for Clark passes. When Clark sees her, good things tend too happen. Mitchell seems a little less sure what to do with herself when the pace slows down. Part -- not all -- of this is that Clark is not used to looking outside for pass receivers. She has never played with high quality guards before. At least some of Clark's turnover problems come from trying to force passes inside when the play is not there, and failing to realize that if the inside is being jammed by the defense there are likely to be people open for midrange and long range shots who would be good assist targets. The worst example of this was the bad turnover that effectively clinched the Dallas win. Clark had Mitchell wide open by at least ten feet on her right side and Boston wide open on her left by about the same, both perched on the three-point stripe where a basket -- and Mitchell is Fever's best three-point shooter statistically and Boston is not bad -- would have closed the game to one point with 35 seconds left. Instead of realizing that with all five defenders ahead of her and four of them collapsing on her people had to be open behind her, Clark didn't look back and to the side and dribbled into a trap and a crucial turnover. No one is perfect, but both Clark and Mitchell need to work on the idea of Mitchell getting open outside and Clark looking for her.
A big part of your complaints about Mitchell not looking for players to kick back to when she drives in traffic, including Clark for potentially open threes as the defense collapses on Mitchell, has to do with Mitchell missing driving lay-ups she should make and making these plays look bad. shots in traffic that everyone on all the Olympic teams routinely make, as do most WNBA guards, including Clark. You have talked about this earlier and been spot-on. Mitchell seems to be intimidated by contact and thrown off her game, causing her to miss shots she should hit. My suspicion is that Mitchell learned in the past to get past defenders with her tremendous speed and get unmolested shots. In the W, if you go down in the trees you're going to get contact -- solid contact, because there are too many defenders who won't be out-quicken.. To a considerable extent, this is a mirror image of Clark's troubles with three-point percentages, since she was used to being allowed to roam uncovered as long as she was far enough outside. In the W, she gets coverage all the way to the logo, and the coverage is by players who are quick, leap very well, and are fast, and also consistently close to her size as opposed to 5'7" Big-10 point guards, causing her to miss. Even when she is open she seems hurried because she feels the defense coming, again causing misses.
Anyhow, Mitchell and Clark need to get on the same wavelength, learn to be alert to what the other can do, and practice, practice, practice. If they do, and get to have teamwork like Clark and Boston already do. Fever will be immensely stronger, since both are among the top few guards in the league.

CC should rest the last two minutes of the 1st and 3rd. With the commercial breaks and halftime, thats 23 minutes of rest while only missing 4 mins of playing time. That will keep her fresh at the end. That 4 mins is Erica's time to sink or swim. And anyone who thinks Mitchell is a problem just doesn't understand talent. She started the season out injured and is getting used to a brand new point guard that is ball dominant and ineffective as a two guard from the corner. They tried this with Grace at point early on and it was also a disaster. My guess is we've seen the last of Erica in a zfever uniform as she is a UFA and the highest paid player with minimal return. I look for the Fever to draft another point guard next year.

I do think Wheeler and Mitchell have potential, they just need better coaching or something. Or maybe if they can just subscribe to this channel they could get some good pointers. There’s a reason the star players get so much praise. They just do it better and have a natural high basketball IQ. Others just have to work at it a bit more but they can get there. Especially Kelsey, I don’t think she’s bad at all for flashes at a time. Maybe I’m being too optimistic but to me the Fever as a whole are actually a pretty decent team right now if they can just work together as they push into the playoffs.
We’ve seen a HUGE improvement with AB and CC working together. Now of course those are (potentially) the 2023 and 2023 rookies of the year playing together which is pretty incredible if you think about it but still, I think the team has a lot of potential even with the mediocre coaching Sides has shown through most of the season.

You could talk about the US - Belgium women’s game the other day. Those 12 best players Reeve keeps talking about are very questionable in some moments. If not for Stewie and Aja they would’ve lost that game

I think they can both go. Maybe if Mitchell can learn to pass in the 2nd half of the season I'll be OK with her. It's frustrating watching CC just stand around and never get the ball back once she passes. And if the plays are set for her to stand around, coach needs new plays. Not just CC, I think they all do it. They're so stagnant offensively when CC isn't running things.

Nah most of us love KM. We were frustrated cause she was missing layups and didn’t pass the ball.
E-Dub fouls too much and has bone head turnovers. If the Fever signs keeps her, they’re the dumbest org alive.

Carter is it my imagination or have you gotten more intense your last few videos, I love it! Carter I also watch Ben Daniels and Mick and I find you more analytical and very interesting. I also like it that you call a spade a spade and really let us know what you think of these players, good and bad. I am hoping your videos make it to the Fever team.
