  • This Is Why Aliyah Boston WILL BE A WNBA LEGEND
In the Indiana Fever’s last game before the WNBA All-Star break, Aliyah Boston recorded her career high, tallying 28 points on 11-14 shooting. Aliyah Boston has been spectacular so far this season, and she’s now finally getting the recognition she deserves. While playing with Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston has the opportunity to be one of the GREATEST WNBA players EVER. How can she do it? In this video, I tell you how.

@@lindysmallwood2039 Yes, she does. It's a tough balance for a pass first pure pg, especially when they're defended the way Caitlin is defended...but I'm sure she's working on that balance. Pass first pgs with more experience struggle with achieving that balance, so it will take Caitlin some time.

Go over highlights of the Fever thus far this season and show the growth of Caitlin...show the growth of the Aliyah/Caitlin combo...show the growth of Kelsey Mitchell, show the growth of Lexi Hull in the game as opposed to earlier in the season when she was largely benched. Nice video, as usual. One thing you might have also mentioned is that what made AB so strong in college and a reason why she was drafted #1 overall is that she has excellent low post footwork, positioning, body control and ability to get high percentage shots under the basket. In fact, these being so strong, in college and even last season most of her game and the offense she was in were focused on getting the ball to her in the low post and then asking her to work 1 on 1 sometimes 1 on 2 or 3 and try to score or else kick out to a teammate made open by AB's own gravity. Thus, she wasn't used to or expecting a fast, running, transition-oriented offense which is one reason she wasn't in shape for it at the beginning of the season, nor did she have much experience playing the roles she's usually playing now, like pick and roll, at the 3point line, at the top of the key, only much more rarely in her familiar area from all those prior years of the bottom of the key. It might be interesting to make a follow up video of AB then and now, first showing how her slow, low-post college offense worked, and the pro offense she was in last season which wasn't all that different, which can emphasize all the things she's added to her game this season in order to work with CC better. All the things you mentioned are indeed important but the basketball things you mentioned like her learning how to be in the right positions in the pick and roll, having a scary good 3point shot for a big, having a scary good outside set shot, and ability to dribble effectively when needed, are compounded by the fact that she still has her greatest strength in her low post repertoire. Opponents know they cannot allow her to get under the basket because she's so effective there, and yet now she's adding so much game beyond the low post opponents also don't want to leave her wide open. Right now defenses are not willing to let CC be uncovered ever if they can help it, so are therefore willing to let AB be uncovered in some locations, but as AB gets better in those beyond the low post areas, eventually defenses may decide they also don't want to allow AB to ever be open either, and then it starts to be really hard to cover the other Fever players if they're, say, willing to double both CC and AB at the same time. To your basic point, if CC hadn't come to the Fever, AB would probably still be in her old, slow low-post oriented offense, and in that role she was probably going to always be one of the better centers in the league but there were also elite players who could stop her inside game and so she was never going to be in one of the all-time great conversations. However, because of CC, AB has been challenged to add so much to her game that she now is becoming far more than just a really excellent low post scorer. So if she does face an elite inside defender AB is now going to have other ways to score and be a threat offensively. She's also in better shape because she has to be to stay up with that uptempo offense and that shows on the field, in her play. This also means she's becoming the type of player that indeed could be an all-time great.
Regarding other video ideas, one idea is a series of videos that break down each player on the Fever (except CC and AB since you've already done those) and for each player show both that player's biggest strength(s) and weakness(es). Maybe also how those strength(s)/weakness(es) have helped the Fever win some games, but also lose some games. Like off the top of my head KM s: scoring & athleticism/ w: defense, NS s: relatively athletic for a big/ w: defense, LH s: defense & athleticism/ w: offensive skills, etc. Also would be nice to do some then & now videos on specific areas where the Fever as a team have improved in specific areas of their game since the beginning of the season. Like then & now how the Fever have improved the pick & roll, then & now how the Fever have improved defensive shifts, etc. and maybe assign grades for both like was a 3 out of 10 now is maybe a 7 out of 10.

This is right. She’s developing into a MVP Caliber player in her own right. I think Boston knows that this team will rise or fall by her and CC playing off one another. What the Fever needs now is a 3 that gives them 3s and D and can run the floor with them too.

AB has tremendous natural ability: size, strength, quickness, great shooting, great court awareness, and is tremendously smart. Plus she has the advantage of having spent college under one of the greatest coaches in the NCAA, especially in coaching big women. A'ja Wilson, Boston, and Kamilla Cardoso all played under Dawn Staley. A big from SC is money in the bank, just like a player from Stanford is going to be a good defender. A'ja is clearly the best in the WNBA right now. Boston is a couple years away from being on the same level as Wilson. Cardoso needs more time in the oven, since she spent less time at SC, has a background of less high competition ball before college, and was in Boston's shadow at college until this last year, but she will come along.
In addition to her great scoring, AB is a very well-rounded player. She is an excellent defender -- won a couple defender of the years in college. She is a super rebounder at both ends. She blocks shots. She steals. She gets assists. She is (here comes heresy) a more complete player at the moment than Clark.
I think that part of her flatness in the early games was probably from reporting a bit out of shape, but I think a lot of it was AB learning about CC and CC learning about AB. Most of you probably don't remember having Magic's passes bounce off his teammates' heads, but it takes a while to adjust for both an ace passer and for her receivers. Now that AB and CC know each other they have both adjusted, including AB running up court to match CC's geared up pace.
Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if CC had had a coach like Staley or Auriemma to force her to work on defense and other weaknesses in her game, instead of encouraging a fireworks show with 45% usage. She would probably not be as famous because it would have been less Caitlin and the seven dwarfs and more team, but my feeling is that CC cares about winning and about playing to get wins more than she does about big stats, as her reaction to her error at the end of the Wings game shows, despite her having had a world-shattering game otherwise. But the big downside to that would be that the huge financial windfall that CC is to the WNBA might never have happened without the all Caitlin all the time game plan at Iowa.
CC (and AB) now have almost four weeks to work on their games. I expect to see improvement because I think the motivation and the work ethic are there. They are already 75% better than in May. I look for another 50% improvement before Labor Day.

    • @outsidethegarden
      @outsidethegarden หลายเดือนก่อน +1

"liked" this in spite of your heresy. (blasphemer! repent!)
I really feel like even my fellow CC fanatics don't give her credit. but you at least tried to. she's SO not padding her stats (how do you pad assists??), and she's SO not "just a 3-point shooter": she wants to build her team.
I don't think you give her enough credit, for what she did at Iowa or what she's doing now. I can see why someone would talk about "the seven dwarves" -- she's not that well-rounded, she's an offensive player. but she never treated her teammates at Iowa as minor or secondary: she supported them and celebrated them, the same way she does her Fever teammates.
yes, the Fever frankly suck at defense (yes including CC herself), except for Lexi Hull. (and Celeste Taylor -- WTF?) but CC is building the team: that's her priority. starting with AB, because she and AB already had a good fit with each other -- from competing in college. think about that.
and in the end, hopefully CC will get Christie Sides on the program too. SOMEbody needs to.
maybe I'm just fan-girling, or making this up. but I see CC playing MVP, always. not about the stats, or anyone even noticing: just, turning a mediocre team into a winning team, and helping her teammates play their best. what she's good at, and what the team and the league needs.
and eventually even converting you heathen heretics to the Church of CC! (j/k)

I am a 80 year old cajun who started watching ladies play basket ball when Louisiana (LSU) won the National championship, thinking this would be a good fill in between football seasons. That quickly turned into an intense interest in the Iowa Hawkeye teams and Caitlin Clark.
My problem is that I know almost nothing about basket ball. Am beginning to figure out what a pick and roll is and have trouble with what the rules are. So in response to your question about what to talk about - some brief tutorials thrown in with your conversations would be nice - like what are the player position numbers - I think one is the “Point guard”, five is the “Big in the center” and other basic facts and rules for us ignorant folks out here

6:16 - AB runs the floor and is set to get the rebound/put back if need be. Personally AB brings a winning personality to the game. She is eloquent, smart, and doesn't hesitate to pump up her team mates good points. And that is a quality that will be with her long after her balling days are over.
Re topics: CC seeming shooting slump. I keep telling myself that everybody has a slump now and then. I believe it is a temporary situation because her college stats say so. But it sure gives the CC haters ammunition to bad mouth her.

  • @outsidethegarden

at LEAST two videos on the All-Star/US game, please!
I loved you pointing out what was apparently good coaching by Christie Sides. give that girl a little credit! helps me keep my cynicism in check.
also, you're talking about what AB and CC could do -- but those two nearly won the Fever/Wings game by themselves. I know nobody pays attention to what happens if your team doesn't win, but seriously, how did they DO that? 2 against 5, man. almost no backup!
and when I watch AB and CC, I keep thinking of Hannah Stuelke at Iowa. if you're going to be there for CC, you have to be thinking on your feet, and expecting her passes to be two steps ahead of you. love to see that up close and slo-mo.
I especially liked your example of AB running with CC, even though CC went ahead and made the layup. I assume this kind of playing gives CC more options: even if she doesn't take those options, it makes her game more fluid and gives the defenders too much to think about. so more exploration of that kind of teamwork would be lovely to see, with your analysis.
also other Fever players who are stepping up and making it happen. KM seems to be much more willing to give CC the ball, and then be ready to get it back.
and just so you don't get typecast as a CC channel, who else is doing something innovative in the W? I'm clueless, so I can't suggest anything (Paige Bueckers in college play, obviously) -- but I'd love to start learning about other players (and coaches!) to get excited about.
finally I loved the gameplay video where you slowed it down: watching what they were doing in slo-mo made it much more real to me. thank you!
(p.s. props for not saying "good things happen." though once or twice wouldn't be a problem. seeing that you've substituted "now check out this next play." but props for not saying that every single time. dude, your excitement is contagious -- you really don't need to get us amped up, we're with you!)

CC was also the choice of GM's to start start a new franchise with. Appears Lin Dunn voted for Boston. Boston got one vote. Half the GM's picked CC at 50%. A'ja got 42% and Boston 8%, 1 vote. We are seeing the beginnings of what could/will someday be known as the best combo of all time in WNBA. A possible interesting program might be showing how/why Caitlin's assists increased during the first half of the season. Another program could be about showing how/why Caitlin's turnovers have decreased. Of course, a lot of the improvement is because her teammates are doing better job catching the ball.
