    Very special thanks to Olivia Gobert-Hicks of the Commander Rules Advisory Group for her talent and, of course, her Teysa deck! Check out more from her @GobertHicks!
    Decklist: archidekt.com/...
    If a player ever owns three cards in exile with hit counters they LOSE THE GAME. Very powerful, but she has a downside. She also must shuffle back into the deck after she hits, and while we can always return her to the command zone, that will increase her commander tax. We’ll need to use blink and bounce effects to keep her out of the command zone and in the fight.
    The crux of this engine is going to be recur-able bounce and blink effects.
    Artifacts like Crystal Shard, Erratic Portal and Portal of Sanctuary can bounce Etrata after her trigger so our opponents creatures still get the hit counter and Etrata returns to our hand safely. creatures like Vedalken Mastermind and Deadeye Navigator also let us keep Etrata from leaping back to the library or command zone.

      I really love that card, the common use is to enchant an indestructible land, although with the new land exile removal, that's not as safe as it used to be, but you can do so many janky things.
      Like also enchant it with Pariah, for a complete win against burn. Or animate a utility land and reduce the cost with Training academy _(pay 1, for 5 mana in any combination)_ Or best of all, animate Westvale Abbey, make it a human, and use Moonmist/Waxing_Moon to force it to transform, without any sacrifices.

    I tried doing etrata then figured id do the next best thing and throw her in with yuriko in ninja tribal. Fun fact since this deck tech didnt mention it. ANY card with a ninjutsu effect can be used at ANY time during the combat step. The only requirement is that the creature must be unblocked (which etrata does) . So the trick is that you can ninjutsu her back to your hand after shes dealt damage and still get all of her benefits sans the shuffling her back. Take note that if you do this after combat damage is done you will NOT get the ninjas specific effect since the ninja needs to deal combat damage in most situations. This however can be remedied with Arcane adaptation or any card that altars the card type of all permanents you control to make her a ninja so any "When a ninja attacks triggers..." will proc as well. Have a good one and ty for the deck tech.

      i've always loved etrata since she was released but her as the commander can just be a little unreliable. i was gonna put her in a yuriko ninja deck but then it kind of confused me bc i would just be better off playing a 1 mana unblockable. but now that i know ninjitzu can be payed for after combat damage.... thats sweet >:^)

    The only things this deck might need is a bit more sweepers (Damnation would be petfect), something to get rid of shroud/hexproof from oponents creatures (Arcane Lighthouse is great and does not take spell slot) and some reanimation to get dead/milled creatures back (Animate Dead, Dance of the Dead etc).
    I really like Erratic Portal and Crystal Shard. Those are great at generating value and technically prevent oponents from tapping out (I have caught many careless opponents with creatures out and no mana to pay for them).

      @mr.mammuthusafricanavus8299 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The ninjutsu ability can be activated during the declare blockers, combat damage, or end of combat steps if you have an unblocked attacking creature.
      Activating the ninjutsu ability during the declare blockers step allows the Ninja to deal combat damage. Using ninjutsu during the combat damage or end of combat steps will mean the unblocked attacking creature is dealing combat damage.
      Good call:P

    • @andrewl9191
      @andrewl9191 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't remember if it said this in the video or not. I listened but not carefully. If you use ninjutsu, Etrata won't deal combat damage, and you won't trigger her ability. Ninjutsu is after the defender has declared blockers, or lack of blockers, and before combat damage I believe. You can't ninjutsu after damage has already happened. As the reminder text says, "Return an unblocked attacker you control to hand: Put this card onto the battlefield from your hand tapped and attacking." You can't put it out tapped and attacking if combat damage has already been done. This may be what you were getting at, but I don't quite understand.

    • @andrewhoward6946
      @andrewhoward6946 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andrewl9191 basically the question is "are you an unblocked attacker until damage, or until the end of combat?"
      After the previous comment I found a ruling on Ninjutsu cards that specifically says you can activate Ninjutsu during the end of combat step, meaning post-damage. The ninja obviously wont deal damage though (which usually makes Ninjutsu pointless, but this is Magic, so fringe cases always matter)

    Just a word of warning about Field of Ruin, each opponent gets to find a land off it, not just you and the opponent you used it against. So in a four player, two of your opponents are getting free ramp. That doesn't mean that Field is a bad card, you just have to be careful about when to use it. It does have the plus side of forcing all players to shuffle their libraries, so if you use it to blow up one opponents Cabal Coffers after another opponent had cast something like Enlightened Tutor, you ruin enough of your opponents game plan that the trade off becomes worth it. Or you can think of it as a political tool.
    tl;dr Don't Field of Ruin willy-nilly. Get the most out of your ruinous wastelands.

    I love my Etrata deck, even if she is a difficult commander. This list is missing an Arcane Lighthouse, it's a pretty necessary utility land given the whole game plan is targeting creatures. Dowsing Dagger is also great, fulfills the need for ramp and fits the commander.
    If you'e looking to lean into the flicker theme, Glen Elendra, Agent of Treachery and Perplexing Chimera are both great payoffs
    Finally, you've got to throw some Ninjas in there, they're both synergistic and fit the theme

    Anyone else here have an Etrata Standard deck (Spark Double, Lazav)? I don't climb the ladder with it, but its fun to pull out and play and does surprisingly well if tuned to have vampire aggro (Sorin, Nightveil Predator) as a backup wincon.

      Etrata's ability is a triggered ability that goes on the stack after damage is dealt. You can respond to the ability with a bounce/blink, which means you blink BEFORE you exile an opponent's creature, but AFTER damage.

    • @rileyalexander9479
      @rileyalexander9479 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andrewhoward6946 thank you so much. I believed because there wasn't like a pause in the ability that by removing her from play even after damage it took the trigger off the stack.

    • @ArmadilloAl
      @ArmadilloAl 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rileyalexander9479 Nope. If a triggered ability has one or more targets, as long as at least one target is still legal as the ability resolves, the ability resolves and you do as much of it as possible, ignoring the rest. In this case, "the creature you're exiling" is the only target, so as long as nobody removes *that* creature before the ability resolves, the trigger will happen. It just skips the "shuffle Etrata" part if said Etrata is no longer on the battlefield.

    i have an interesting question: i tried this deck in Arena, and "shuffle Etrata in library" trigger can't be responsed or prevented, so after exiling opponent's creature with Hit counter, Etrata is immediately shuffled in library. Is that Arena's problem or Etrata's ability can't be prevented by MTG rules?

    she's one of my 'fun' decks in my roster. She is never as consistent in wins as my big hitters like Gishath Dinos or Scion Dragons. But that doesn't matter because she's fun and a good hard counter if I'm sitting at a table with another tribal or token strategy.

  • @puffin-onehandedgamer1164
    @puffin-onehandedgamer1164 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would include some ninjas, as they can save etrata from being shuffled in as well right? Or is ninjitsu only before damage? and Spark double lets you have 2 etratas on the field, if you have money, Sakashima is copy number 3. or is that 4 with mirror gallery.
    here is what I found on Reddit regarding ninjitsu:
    During Declare Blockers Step: Your opponent didn't block a creature, you get
    to swap it for a ninja and the ninja deals it's damage and activates
    it's trigger Combat Damage Step:
    First Strike/Double Strike creatures can get a hit in then you activate
    ninjutsu this way the ninja also deals damage during the regular damage
    step. If there are no creatures with either of those, then ninjas can't
    do damage if used at this step. This is the step you would activate it
    if you have an. [[Etrata the Silencer]] to get her trigger in but hold
    it on the stack this way she won't end up shuffling herself.
    End of Combat: Almost the same thing as Combat damage step when lacking
    First Strike and/or Double Strike. You can activate ninjutsu this step
    if you just want to get the ninja out for the sake of it.
    So in Conclusion: you can ninjitsu a ninja in after Etrata has triggered, so putting in cheap casted ninjas to save Etrata instead of all this fancy blink stuff might be better right?

    • @andrewl9191
      @andrewl9191 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ninjutsu is before damage. You'd have to let her hit first in order to put her triggered ability on the stack. A previous combat mentions that when that goes on the stack is when you need to bounce or blink her.
      "Hit with Etrata, place her ability on the stack, hold priority, cast Unsummon (etc), Unsummon resolves to bounce her to your hand, and then her ability resolves, exiling the target card, and you don't have to shuffle/replace her. If you do just flicker her, she's technically not the same item anymore and doesn't have to shuffle.

    Can you actually proliferate the hit counters like with infect counters?

    • @andrewl9191
      @andrewl9191 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think so.
      1. The hit counter is on a card in exile and can't be targeted by proliferate
      2. You would only have a second proliferate on the same card if you could
      3. The trigger text says, "if they own three or more exiled cards," so you wouldn't get an additional card to exile if you simply proliferate a counter on another card.

    I thought this commander would be fun, but its such a hassle to get the win trigger most of the time. Against any sort of deck that doesn't rely on creatures, you do literally nothing. Same with any deck that can sac their own dudes, the trigger will never resolve. To be honest, i feel like Etrata does more work as an alternate target for Lazav the Multifarious to turn into if you feel like playing the meme.
