  • This tutorial is part of our Trainz route building tutorial series using TRS19. This series is dedicated to covering as many of the route and session creation tools available in the surveyor as possible, and how to use them.
In episode 9.5 we cover how to use new and old UK signals, how to set up feather & theatre signals, how to use gantries, and finally how to use catenaries. The topics for this video were suggested to me by a viewer on Discord.

This is the greatest series of tutorials I have ever seen for TRS2019, now I know how to make catenary's, so now I can make electrified north American lines for AEM 7's and other electric locomotives. Amazing 555 to the power of 5 / 10

Wow these assets must have taken some development, so good on those people who did. And full marks to Sharadise for getting your head around it all. Not sure I would be rushing into building a catenary route any time soon, though it's impressive to see how it works.

To be honest, the catenary work I did in this video is a bit amateurish. You can make things a lot more realistic with placing individual hangers, wires, isolators, weights, etc... but that level of detail is of course very time consuming.

Yikes, this was heavy duty. I think I'll stick to non-electric trains and simple USA signals for awhile! :-)

Where did you get those semaphore signals...? @Sharadise

Look on the DLS for "Sig UQ" (the "UQ" stands for upper quadrant).

I don't know sorry. Either they're on the DLS, or they came with TRS19 (or one of the packaged DLCs that come with TRS19 Standard).

Unfortunately, like many people in Trainz before you, you have not understood the purpose of the "Distant" signal in a British semaphore system. Yes, in Trainz it will read the next signal as you have shown but its real purpose in life is to inform the driver of a train whether or not the whole of the next signalling block (controlled by the next signal box ahead) is clear.
In the old Block Section semaphore system, a simple signalling block could often consist of just a Distant Signal, up to a mile away from the home signal; then the Home Signal followed by a Section (or Starter) Signal just past the controlling signal box. This describes a minimalistic set up for the puposes of this explanation. The area between the Home Signal and the Section (Starter) Signal is known as "Station Limits," even if there isn't a station there. If there was one, it would obviously be located there. If there were any sidings present under the control of the Signal Box in this example then any additional signals would have to be placed within station limits too.
When the Distant Signal is Clear (or "Off" in railway language) it means that ALL stop signals under the control of this box in the direction of travel are showing Clear (Off.) If the distant signal is "On" or at Caution then the driver of the train would begin braking in order to be prepared to stop at the home signal, which may or may not be at danger (On.) There are then a set of rules about how the signals would be cleared from there onwards in a caution situation but they're too complicated for Trainz and so not relevant here. I hope my explanation is of some help to you.

      That's really interesting!
Thank you for taking the time to write this clarification.
I was aware that in real life UK Semaphore signals weren't as simple as in Trainz, but I didn't know exactly in which ways. So I presented them the way they work in Trainz.
What are your sources for this information? I'm asking because I've recently started developing a UK route set in the era of semaphores and I'd like to get them as accurate as I can.
      Kind regards,
      - Sharadise

@Cyberdon Blue very informative. So, if I have understood this correctly, for the semaphore signal era, when constructing a Trainz route, does this mean wherever there is a distant signal on a route, we should always include an associated signal box somewhere in the vicinity after the distant signal? Actually, as I'm writing this I am realising that, of course, there must ALWAYS be a signal box somewhere in the vicinity, otherwise how would any of the signals be operated? So it is a mute point, I guess. But, I've just realised that in some of my own routes I have failed to include the signal box!!! Rookie error!! :)
The point I guess I am making (at least to myself) is that in the modern era, where signals are controlled electronically, the signal centres that control them can be located remotely, many, many miles away from the actual signal location, so there are far less signal control centres in the modern era. But in the semaphore era, where the signals are controlled mechanically by levers and cables, the signal boxes needed to be located locally.

    • @Sharadise
      @Sharadise  3 ปีที่แล้ว

I don't think that the differences between upper and lower quadrant signals is great enough to warrant a separate tutorial, since to my (limited) knowledge the only difference - at least in trainz - is whether the arm goes up or down for 'clear' (please correct me if I'm wrong). If you need help finding lower quadrant signals on the DLS, I would suggest searching for "LQ", as well as filtering for track side objects.
