    I used a used perfect large Surly Krampus and fork with the BBHD and it turned out great. I was looking for a medium but couldn't pass the deal up. I'm 5'10" and so I can ride either a large or medium. I am looking for something like it in a medium and a small frame to build for my wife. I like your idea of buying good quality used bikes but I would like stay at or above the Surly quality. If could spend 500-1000 bucks per frame for used hardtail 29er steel bikes similar to the Surly Krampus, what would you look at? Seems my biggest challenge was finding the correct chain line and front gear and spacers to clear the chain stay. Seems like older aluminum and carbon frames wouldn't be a good idea.
    What about something like a Canfield hard tail ? I'm thinking of maybe stepping up into a better frame that is a little shorter but about the same length. Any Ideas?

    Hi! Which hardtail can fit Lekkie 52t on a BBSHD not hitting the chainstay?
    How will it it impact on chainline?
    I'm willing to sacrifice some lowest gears though.

    Hope you can answer.

I was positive I was going to do a ebike convertion to a 1500W rear hub setup. Now that I've seen your video about mid drive vs. hub, I'm positive I'm going to go with a mid drive. Only big question I have is should I find a mid drive around 1500W vs. the 750 in this video? I want more power than range but sounds like this is pretty sweet on 52v and with the benifits of mid drive. Should I bother with more motor power?

    • @JohnnyNerdOut
      @JohnnyNerdOut  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The BBS02 rated at 750w puts out about 1500w at peak. It’s pretty powerful. The HD puts out a little over 1700w at peak. If you want more you need to go either cyclone or cyc motor. Personally I think 1700 W is a good amount and anything more than that you’re starting to put more and more strain on your bicycle components.

    1. Is the Trek Marlin 7 about as good an all around bike as you can get, especially for the price, to convert to an E-bike, or do you have any other suggestions?
    2. I've seen TH-cam videos stating that the Bafang controller is not that great, and it's recommended to replace it with an external controller. You've never mentioned any problems with the Bafang controller and I wonder how you feel about it.

    • @JohnnyNerdOut
      @JohnnyNerdOut  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1- pretty much yes....As long as its what you personally need. but yes IMO.

      @skaybaltimore 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JohnnyNerdOut Thanks for the quick response. I think the people who were advocating an after market external controller were looking to max out the engine more than the stock controller allowed.
      Last question: I noticed in the speed test you weren't pedaling. Do you think you could have gotten a higher top end if you had been pedaling in a high gear? When it comes to E-bikes I don't mind throttle assist but I mainly want the bike to feel as much like a bike as possible. I've had motorcycles (and 300cc fuel injected scooters that could cruise all day at 80+mph and still get over 50mpg), and I'm not looking to replicate that on an E-bike (like the Sur-Ron, for example).

      @@JohnnyNerdOut That makes sense. Plus, I saw in another video of yours that you stated that when you do the speed test you only use the throttle to demonstrate the "pure" speed of the throttle assist with no pedaling. That makes sense as well. Great job. You've definitely opened my mind to a more economical higher quality E-bike option.

    Could you make that bike with a ultra max motor and then program it so its less than 750w so im league to use in nh? I would also need a 700w sticker over the 1000w stamp on the motor and a class 2 700w 20mph sticker on the frame. And a receipt saying its only capable of 700w would keep me out of trouble with the game warden.

      ultra motor needs a specially designed frame to house it

      @@fulllfreezer yes I can. It would use the BBSHD motor instead of the ultra. I actually just finished a bike that is pretty close to a Mule clone today. I believe the total cost including bike was around 2800$. Bike was a Motobecane 26x4.9” with hydraulic brakes

    Here in NH I have to be under 750w to be woods league. 750w and up would need registration and written permission from land owners everywhere i go. Does anyone make a mid drive less than 750w but more than 500w

      They usually make them in increments. 250,350,500,750,1000 ..... so unfortunately no. 500w is still a decent option

    Yours look so clean and cluttered. I watched another vid and the guy has wires all over the place and I wouldn't want to ruin the look of my beautiful Marlin 7 with that S%#t! I Gotta ask, what year is yours? My 2020 has an angled and flat top bar. Great vid though, I ordered the gear sensor which I wouldn't have done otherwise and it is good to see how it will look!

    Did you use the stock bafang front sprocket? I have a 30T front and it has alignment issues with not enough offset.
