@@johnnywantyoudead5113 I'm partial to the Death of Superman event, myself. It helps that I had the trade of it from a very young age, and the trade did a good job of bringing in tie-ins that showed just how THOROUGHLY FUCKED everyone was against Doomsday. I will never forget the feeling of reading how Doom ripped through every hero thrown at him, each only serving to make him better by removing his restraints slowly, only for the Blue Boy Scout to throw the first punch to make him truly pause. And then to immediately go to Supes' internal monologue about how he was tights-browningly scared because everything this monster was throwing at him hurt to a degree he had never felt before. I am protective of that story and how it was told to this day, and is a major reason why I hate Batman V Superman as much as I do.

I didn’t think this was particularly woke, not compared others you’ve reviewed. Stomping on the Klan is just good old-fashioned fun, like stomping Nazis, or Imperial stormtroopers. I do think you were a bit harsh on Chuck, though, because he’s just a kid. I’d have less sympathy if he was 30, but “I don’t want to believe the people I love are monsters” is a pretty normal reaction for a 15-year-old.

I don't think he was too harsh, the story does pretty well by Chuck, he ends up being forgiven and with none of the endless guilt and debt that the left like to spout about in spite of starting out as an asshole and going along with his uncle the terrorist for most of the book. He was taking part in some evil stuff, imagine how you might react if you learned your son attended a communist of fascist rally where people were hurt and buildings were burned. 15-year-olds aren't adults, but they definitely are responsible for their actions. The book gives him a similar treatment to Agent Kallus, from Star Wars Rebels, it's overly optimistic and hopeful, but I think that's not out of place for a children's show or comic. JSJ's comments about him seem similar to his comments about some contrivances surrounding the kids; they aren't wrong, but they also seem intended towards a more mature audience than the comic is probably designed for.

I also agree that the girl shouldn't have explained to superman about his powers. If the girl had to be involved they could have used Lois to be the bridge between Superman and the girl. Absolutely.
    They're also still his family.
He has known them his entire life - unless these people are hideous cartoonish super-villains that do nothing but talk about how much they hate the non-whites, Chuck is going to have a very complex and deeply rooted connection to them - even before you add in the additional hard-wired part of them being his parents. His entire concept of self is going to be heavily dependent on his relationship to his parents and the things they taught him.
And now he's just learned that on a fundamental level everything he thought he knew about them might be wrong.
And he's a _child._ A teenager specifically, so to some extent he's likely to have more to stake his identity on, but that's still a really big one.
Chuck is honestly a pretty realistic depiction of how that cognitive dissonance might play out for a person: you _know_ what they did is deeply, horribly wrong, but on a subconscious level you still love these people because they're your family, and in a way a part of who you are. Completely overturning that is incredibly distressing, so the brain actively tries to rationalize a way out of having to do it. And it can fucking _hurt._
So instead the brain tries to make excuses to soften the blow, to salvage as much as it can. And a lot of this _will_ sound like attempts to make it sound like justifications.
Tommy's reaction is honestly just as valid, because he is also a kid, and as far as he can tell Chuck just wants to stay racist - especially given all the shit he's been through and the fact that he has none of the attachments to Chuck's parents to stop him from thinking they're evil.
I'm only bringing this up because it sounds like you're treating this bit like the writer is trying to _defend_ the racists.
    26:40
Because the entire theme of the story is centered on the sense of alienation and isolation racism can create, both for the people who are victimized by it and the people who genuinely believe it, and coming from Lois there wouldn't be any weight to the delivery of this scene.
Don't get me wrong, the logic behind it is weak, it's ham-fisted and more than a bit shoehorned, but the main reason it's there is to connect the theme to Superman and use him as a lens to try to make a point in a way the reader might not have considered.
The awkwardness and illogic of the scene is a surface-level issue; the actual substance is in why the scene is here at all. It can be argued that the substance isn't enough to justify the illogical and awkward framing, but to do that you have to acknowledge the goal.
How the fuck'd you read the title 'Superman Smashes the Klan' and expect something that _wasn't_ going to put the subtext and themes before solid logic and believability?

Always powerful to see people wrongly led by evil being given a shot at redemption or realizing the error of their ways. Chuck is understandable as he's beginning to question other motives and sides to what his family believes. It's hard to cope with needing to completely re-evaluate your entire life's viewpoints, especially when you realize how severely damaging it is to others.
He started out as a bully, but I think it's showing how he's become lost when he sees how much more extreme that mentality has gone with his Uncle. White supremacists love to claim they're "protecting what they love" but it's hypocritical when most of their actions are done in service of hate.
I think the comic does a good job with Chuck showing how a white supremacist begins to react when they realize their values are more-so rooted in hate. I don't think it's odd it would mirror "stages of grief" either.

That being said, the Unity House was featured in a previous radio show story, where anti-american agents were manipulating a gang of youths to sabotage it in order to turn people against each other.
Edit: Already I saw deviations from the radio show story, particularly with Chuck Riggs and Superman: In the story, Superman only found out who Chuck Riggs was and his significance when Clark Kent put out an open letter on the Daily Planet newspaper to the kid who tipped the Daily Planet off about Tommy Lee, and that open letter was posted *after* Jimmy Olsen and Perry were kidnapped by the Klan following Perry's posting of a 1000 dollar (later 5000 dollar) bounty for identifying members of the Klan of the Fiery Cross.

@@ShadowWingTronix I don't know, only started actively listening to the radio show serials around the dark side of the moon story (which I'll save that rant for another time, but I'll leave it with this: HOW THE *FUCK* DOES THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON HAVE PROPER ATMOS?!)
But I know for a fact Superman had the power of X-Ray Vision and flight in the radio show at least.
Still hold my conviction that JSG's just frivolously nitpicking in this video though.

@@GlareanLiebertine Admittedly I haven't really gotten far in my listening of the Superman radio show (I've been listening to The Blue Beetle during walks...which I hope to start doing again when the nights are a bit warmer) but it's not like the show didn't get things wrong. The Kents, who show up in this story, weren't part of his origin unless they added that later as a retcon. Episode 2 just has Kal-El on Earth as an adult, given his Clark Kent identity by a scientist and his grandson he saves from a train accident.
Guy is right that he should at least be leaping the tall building instead of climbing it (I don't know what the show did in the original story) but if he could fly then that makes this even dumber just so they could have the little Chinese girl tell Superman how to use his powers despite (according to the review) not showing any kind of science prodigy skills. I don't know if that's woke necessarily but it is rather silly if not stupid.

I've seen the criticism, no one said to stay in your lane. They stated your strong suit is comics, and calling out the bullshit in them is what you are good at. However, that your political opinions are misinformed at best. Much like how you deflected when people pointed out that you were wrong about your rants on the Florida bill, and continue to not point out that things like the klan came not from your perceived evil republicans but in fact the always been racist democrats.
All in all i like the message of the book unity overcoming racism. though I need to point out your own fallacy of pointing out that one of the things that shows bigotry is wanting to be with your own kind, while in the next breath you try to try to associate that with those who have a different world view. "you thought we wouldn't notice, but we did"

This is why they told him to stick to comics aka "Stay in your lane because I'm too closed-minded to accept the fact that you have different opinions". Even if he might have gotten some information wrong doesn't mean he shouldn't be allowed to voice his opinion. Your comment is the reason why we don't need echo chambers on TH-cam and why they should be banned. Also, do you know how many channels give out misinformation? It's not only JSG. Who do you listen to on TH-cam when it comes to politics? Also, the klan consisted of both Democrats and Republicans but you stated it has always been racist democrats. Now look who's giving out misinformation. Maybe you should stay in your lane.

Again no one said for him to "stay in his lane". They praised his pop culture knowledge but pointed out that his political narratives were flawed. Which if he wants to get into the political battlefield he needs to toughen up because he will get steam rolled in any debate he goes into with his current misinformed opinions
I don't really get my opinions from anyone, i listen for a topic to come up coming from one side or another then i research that myself, The fucked up part is to even hear a topic that the right is talking about i have to subscribe to them because everything front page is left wing talking points.
No kid, I'm from the south, i know the history. Yes, it was majority Democrat but to say everyone in the Klan was Democrat is like saying everyone in Germany was Nazis. Plus, the parties switched ideologies a long time ago. In fact, I think THIS would not be only a good conflict for Superman, but also a great way to stablish why his powers changed. The disadvantage, of course, is that this would only work on the "neighborhood friend" phase of Superman. Of course, it would be a "must" for him to go full power when stronger villains came around.

Y'know, one of the things I like about Yang's work is that he can tackle things like racism without being preachy. Even the klansmen were humanized. American Born Chinese is a good example of this, and Boxers & Saints handled the Boxer Rebellion quite well.
As a Superman comic, I think it's safe to say that Yang gets Superman. That's the problem with a lot of woke comics; they just don't get the heroes they're portraying, while Yang is clearly a superhero fan. My favorite part was when the klansman thought he died and the first thing he saw was a Jewish man, and was scared to find out Jews were in Heaven.
Btw, The Shadow Hero is another one of his excellent comics. It's an origin story to the first Asian superhero in comics. It's one of the more original superhero origins I've read.
