Glad I found this, I am hardware/software dumb and moving to a new apt that had me get a new router to access their hardwired wifi, I feel confident now that I'll have internet shortly after I move in instead of having to call someone!
This is ONLY a Router, you also NEED a Modem for the Wifi to actually work. Most internet providers today simply install a Modem/Router built in one unit... most people aren't aware fo that..... two technologies are need to have wireless internet.
You don't need a modem if you have fibre. Just connect the router to the switch or directly to the fibre port in the wall (WAN). This is standard here in Scandinavia. BUT you are absolutely right if you still have broadband through the ancient ADSL technology - in that case you definitely need a modem to convert the signal.

Now I switched to fibre, have a port on the wall as you said, plugged ethernet cable to my old router (it works with both adsl and fibre) and everything works fine. Now I am looking for a new router to work with high speed connection and all these tp link videos showing router connected to modem to work really surprise me.

Routers are different than modems. Motems take the signals from internet lines and convert them into usable data. Routers just transmit wifi signals to devices.
okay so i live in a 3 story house and my wifi router is all the way in the 1st floor. the 3rd floor has horrible internet connection. if i plug this into the router does it help extend the wifi connection down to the 3rd floor making the wifi connection better?

I have exactly the same problem, I don't have a modem but I have a UTP wire that comes out from the wall and an Ethernet outlet (I live in a student room). I'll keep trying to set it up, let's keep each other updated :))

This is infuriating, 2 hours trying to set this with dead websites and cache clearing only to get to a page that freezes (the password set page). And to boot the stupid QR code doesn't work without wifi (if I had wifi, I definitely wouldn't have bought this). AaaaaarrrrrghghGH!
Nathan Yeah, you can go to their website with that specific router connected to the computer with an ethernet cable and there is a setting in the advanced tab where you can switch it to “access point” mode. Once you do that you will see a little loading bar moving and then it will reboot your router in access point mode.

Can you do it so it doesn’t have to be connected to the modem through Ethernet but wireless
